I did a search and couldn't find anything on this particular band outside of a few "Videogame music" threads, so I apologize if this has been discussed time and again.

Anyways, I just found a couple albums by the Black Mages on my hard drive, and I'm blown away. Produced by Nobuo Uematsu himself as well.

I'm a huge FF nut, I'm sure you've already figured this out. Anyways, this is as close to FF \m/ as I'm ever going to find, and it kicks all kinds of ass. On the two albums I have they cover every game from the original up through X. I have to say though that the two songs they do from FFIV are the best, but I'm horribly biased, hell, one of them is my ringtone. The original battle theme from the first game is also incredible. In the 8 and 16 bit games theres so little to pull from but it all comes out absolutely fantastic.

Absolutely amazing.

Not that it matters to me where you "found" them....just wondering.
I "found" a couple of items on bit torrent myself. Yes by the way, they do indeed kick ass.

I don't know, I didn't care for it much. They focused far to much on the synth, and not enough on the rock. The only ones I liked were the FF7 ones (which sounded pretty faithful to the game) and the Kefka boss theme (again, pretty faithful to the game, almost identical).

Lets just say I "found" a large torrent. One with 86 albums that happen to have a common thread...

Yeah Evan, I've begun to realize theres too much synth too, but this is as close to FF Metal as I'm ever going to get.

It's actually a group consisting of Uematsu and some other Square musicians. They've done shows in Japan, and I think they may have done a couple outside of Japan even. I believe there's a DVD of one of the shows. From everything I've heard, the shows aren't supposed to be that great, though. It's clear that playing live is not their forte. Supposedly, you can even see them screwing up on the DVD.

Listening to Black Mages 2 now- love how they added lyrics to "To Zanarkand"!

They didn't really stick with me as much as some of the other arranged RPG music albums I've heard (FFVIII Piano Collection, FFIV Celtic Moon, Chrono Trigger Brink of Time, etc).

I just watched a dvd rip of their Black Mages 2 concert. Amazing! Watching them play (and the guest stars singing) is amazing.

I guess they don't wear blue robes and funny hats.

When they're in concert, no. What they do in the studio is anyone's guess. If anyone wants the torrent for the concert, lemme know please.

A year has past, and the Black Mages has sort of grown on me. I think their second album is much better than their first (which focused too much on similar sounding battle themes). Still, my favourite is still on the first album, Clash on the Big Bridge.

I love the blackmages, I got the first CD a couple of years ago and loved it, 2nd one is also great, I wish they will do a 3rd one once ff12 comes out.
