View Full Version : NCAA College Basketball 2K3 for GCN...rarest GCN game??

I noticed that NCAA 2K3 for Cube is very difficult to find. There are only three on Ebay right now and two of those are BIN only at $50 and $80. One recently sold for $41.00 and it seems that any BIN less than $50 gets snatched up quickly. Anyone know why this game seems to be so HTF? Low production run? It is the only college basketball game on GCN I think. Anyway, I was very fortunate and found a complete mint copy at a used bookstore while I was out of town last week...I bought it for $5.00.

In terms of known copies that sold, yes. Someone quoted less than 6,000 were sold before Sega pulled the title from shelves.

Hard to know if any "regular" titles out there have sold less despite being available a lot more widely and easily.

Right after it was released, sega pulled it from shelves. I've heard that there are numbers ranging from 5K-10K that were sold and are floating around out there. All of the information that everyone has at the moment points to this being the rarest GC game so far.

Pokemon Box is probably going to be another candidate as I think it was only sold through official nintendo outlets. Anyone have an idea as to how many of these have been sold?

Edit - ack, beat me to it!

Those prices are crazy. I sold a used copy (with no instruction booklet) for a measily $12 just a couple of months ago.

BTW it IS rare, but I don't believe they had any reason to pull it off store shelves. More likely it just had a small pressing run since Sega was already bailing out on the Gamecube's 2K sports releases (seeing poor numbers) already by the time it came out.

I got my copy from EB for 12.99

I can vouch for the fact that the game had a standard run quantitiy of at least 60,000 (if someone can get me the part number, I can look up the run size). I've been told that the game was pulled from the shelves due to liscensing issues with NCAA, I don't think sega had the rights to publish the game.

A while back, I remember being told that it sold just over 6000 coppies in it's first year. Oddly enough, it was only Sega's 3rd worst seller on the cube, after some volleyball title and something else i can't remember.

The part number from the disk is DL-DOL-GNKE-USA.

That would be Beach Spikers and Puyo Pop Fever

I should have been more specific, I need the little, tiny, small number written on the inside of the spindle hole on the disk(i'm pretty sure game cube games have it printed on there...).

Took a bit of light trickery and a magnifying glass to read it, but I got there in the end ;)

virtua Quest for the cube seems like it will be rather rare. Only plave that i ever saw carrying it when it first came out was Target. It sold horribly and got pretty poor reviews.

No data at all, there's absolutely no refrences to the game anywhere. I've seen recalls before, but i've never seen the data disapear afterwords. The plot thickens?

I've seen it (and still do) at EB, Toys R Us and Gamestop. Never dropped from the $39 price point new but I did grab one last week used at EB for $18 during their B3G1 Free promotion. The PS2 one is part of the Green Tag sale at Toys R Us but the GCN one isn't.

Maybe I should invest in this game. The local game shop is selling it for 30, but then again, it is also selling the handheld version (it looks like a wierd gameboy) of r-zone.

I am just lucky that the place has no idea what an r-zone is, which means that I should be able to get that for the same price next week (they were selling it for $15).

Not sure why everyone is so interested in this game. Is it rare? Yes. Does anyone really collect rare sports games? Not anybody I know. I guess if you have to have every single GC release then maybe it is worth tracking down, but otherwise I can't see this maintaining much value down the road.

I really think that Bust-a-Move 3000 is much harder to find, but that's just my experience, no "hard numbers."

As far as it being a "sports game," one of the most desired games out there, Stadium Events, is a sports game--and a clone of a really common sports game at that. Now, I'm not saying that NCAA 2K3 is the next Stadium Events, but my point is that sports game or not, its irrelevant if its nearly impossible to find.

Austin
10-22-2005, 10:58 AM
Yeah, I can't really see this holding up the value, either. It'll be one of those games that only the completists will be looking for down the road.

jdchess
10-22-2005, 12:48 PM
Technically, only "completist" look for Stadium Events, and I would have to say the value has more than just "held up." I think Dobie makes a good point about the "sports game" idea.

NCAA 2k3 is for sure, though I do see it once in while, Now beach spikers is a tuff find for sure, and Cubivor can be very hard to find in certain areas.

All I'll say about those last three is that I got my copies off people I know, as opposed to eBay or any shop.

The more and more I look at this topic, I notice how "regional" some games can be. I have never seen an NCAA BBall 2k3 in the wild, yet beachspikers seems to be something I see fairly often. I think it is extremely hard to predict the future rarity of games because of this.

I agree, I've only saw 1 copy of BAM 3,000, which I own, and it doesn't have the boxart or manual :(

Also, I got NCAA CB 2K3 today at GameStop :D

but I don't really consider Decathalon style games to be sports games. I guess my collecting philosophy has been to collect things that are sort of a generic sports game and to avoid anything with a year after the title. There are exceptions, but I think the fact that NCAA 2003 also came out for other systems is going to make it something I will never be interested in. Like I said, there are always completists, but I can't imagine this game ever being worth more than the $50 it goes for new when it appears on Ebay.

i know that this NCAA game is hard to find, but i have seen it out in the wild a few times, including the time that i got my copy.

the 2 games i've noticed actually being difficult to find are rave master and top angler. not sure what the numbers are for those titles, but they can't be high. are those regional things? anyone out there with an overwhelming amount of either title?

I searched high and low for my copy of Top Angler, and I haven't seen one since. And back when I collected for Gamecube, I was on the lookout for Ravemaster but never found one.

The searches I did on Ebay showed complete USED copies going for between $40 - $70 and NEW copies in the $80 - $100 range...a couple have even topped the $100 mark. So, I'm not sure where you got your info.

Everybody who wanted Rave Master pretty much got their copy off the internet. I asked a GameStop once if they had it, and it wasn't even in the database. I ordered my copy off of http://www.gameexpress.com dunno if they have any copies of it left though. And I've yet to see a copy in the wild. As for Top Angler, I don't see that one very often either.

i think we have a new candidate for rarest game... or at least the most expensive...

there's also currently one up for auction at $94 and online retailers selling it for $220-$325. hope you gamecube collectors picked one up while you could for cheap.

Mayhem

It was $20 originally wasn't it?

I think I got QoF to order two, one for her and one for me about a year ago from the Nintendo online store.

Well it looks like the special Pokemon Box set would definitely be the most valuable GCN game, but it is a special limited edition that was only available at a specific location. The other games we were discussing, such as NCAA Basketball 2K3, BAM, and Top Angler, were all standard releases available in many locations on the retail level...makes things a little different.

NCAA Basketball is a USA only release, which makes it special more special for me, I got Pokebox (Pal) with my cube for free (hey I didn't want the the whole Pokemon Colleseum, but it was the best deal as it included a memory card 251 and gba-link for 10 euro less then one with just mario kart dd). Maybe I will check german eBay for the boxed pal-version, as it must also be really rare.

When I was hunting in Canada, I saw 2 or 3 copies of Bust a Move 3000. There is also one for rent at my local Video store. Looks like a very regional thing to me.

You're wrong about Bust A Move 3,000. It was ONLY available at Toy's R Us and got snached up really fast. It also had a low print run. It took me 2 Years of looking to find a copy, and it was loose! It might be a little easier if your around a bunch of Toy's R US' but to most of us, it isn't.

Bust-a-Move was not only available at Toys R Us... a friend of mine got his at K-Mart when it was first released, not even knowing it would become a rare game someday. But it certainly didn't have a wide distribution.
