I just got back from EB with my Q4 , I bought the regular
set because , well if your here on a game site and don't
already have Quake 2 with all the mods on your PC or own the game,
somethings wrong with you ... Anyways the game either comes multidisc regular cdrom or a collectors set with
one single DVD.
Im about to install it now and start blasting stroggs away like it's my job or something.

Must have Quake 2 on our computer? Next thing you know, you're going to start saying things like you have game tattoos.

And the games to match the tattoos son...
Yeah so anyways... (me and the other thousands of other people who played quake 2 DM for years online)
This is the card im trying to run it with
http://www.vtechindustries.com.au/productinfo.php?id=SA5500-256D&PHPSESSID=b95d0e633c09caf6cf455159542010ce
It runs it, but at it's lowest rez settings and its starting to
pee me off. I even went so far as to overclock it
and that was like a halfstep better.
I was looking into a higher end card, not a problem but
the higher end card wants a PCI Express motherboard
to run it... anybody have an extra $700 for the ati card
and $190 for the asus board to run it?
I knew this was gonna happen (having to upgrade even
though i built this machine 5 days ago) but not this drastic.
It does ( i stand slightly corrected) resemble DOOM 3
looking at the game alittle more.
The enemies come after you like you owe them alot of money or slept with thier wives and stuff.
Outrunning them is a chore even on the easy level.
The intro could have been better (more quake'ish)
You ever talk to people who only bought or played Doom 3
for the Xbox, but never seen or played it for the PC then
say "The xbox version is spot on to the pc version" uh, HELL NO ITS NOT! My buddy has a wicked maching and his pc version makes the xbox version look weak.
I own both versions and i like them both, but the pc is the real way to play this game.
We always bitch and moan about having next gen graphics
but always get mad when it involves us having to pay for it (forced to upgrade for the eye candy)
I hate it, but being a gamer and wanting to see cutting edge graphics in games i fall prey to it everytime.
If anybody else here knows of a better video solution
other than the PCI Express cards please let me know.
I hear ATI cards have fast cards with more ram, but nvidia is better.

Yeah that and all the new console games that came out.
"The Warriors" has been flying right off the store shelves.
I need to check that game out, but i blew all my spare coin
trying to build this new pc (for updating my ipod and playing quake4) and i had to repair the brakes on my car.
I noticed a new Castlevania for the PS2 that i really really really wanna check out.

That castlevania game is out? I liked lament a lot, but it defenitely had more than enough room for improvement. Interested in the sequel...as for console games, I'm really interested in picking up the warriors and shadows of the colossus, but I think I'm gonna wait on those two for a while.

Yeah, I know. Was just kidding. You told me that, and showed pictures, many, many moons ago. Just wandering if you'll ever figure out who I am, as I had a different handle back in the day. ;)
Is singleplayer mode any good?

Yeah but i got like 12 more tattoo's
since then, the cloud strife tatt took 5 hours one sitting.
The thing i like about the single player
is that the other marines are like running around you
trying to survive while your playing.
I had to fetch a medic at one point for another marine
and escort him to the wounded guy.
If you find a medic, he will treat your wounds too.
Stroggs are busting through walls, Tackling marines you
are having convo's with . It's insanity because
you really jump out of your seat when your attacked.
Screenshots don't do this game justice, it looks better
than that crappy trailer you see on the monitor at EB
The machine i built, which believe it or not CRAWLS
when you put it at 800X600 has these specs.
Pentium 4 2.8 ghz with 1meg cache.
A GIG of DDR running @800mhz fsb
(that video card i linked above) If your getting this game, get a better card.
Asus AI P4P800 motherboard.
twin Samsung SATA drives , 120 gig each
1 floppy (oh well)
DVDRW 16x
CDRW+DVD drive 52x
Firewire card with 3 ports

I seen the box for the new castlevania on the shelf but it
might be a "Comming Soon" box or something.
Anybody else notice the amount of new game titles comming out lately? reminds me of 93 when the snes was
spitting new games out left and right.
Maybe they are rushing all the titles out to bank on them before the next gen of home consoles comes out for sony, nintendo and microsoft .

They do this really good RAVEN video plug before the game
starts lol.

If anyone actually does have Q2 still installed I'd LMAO!

Quake 2 with the lithium mod,
Picking up the haste rune running around on "The Edge", shotting people with the rocket launcher, can't get much better then that.
I probably would still have it installed, but I found the converted map of "The Edge" for Quake 3, so now we play that.

I've been playing the multiplayer and this is what I gotta say so far:
I love it, but there are a few problems.
1. Other people are VERY hard to see sometimes. In Q3 I can see enemies and allies very easily, but it's harder in Q4.
2. I HATE the new rail zoom. It shoots up the sensitivity of the railgun, making it very hard to aim with.
3. Need to figure out how to make peoples name appear when I go over them with the mouse. (Not so much a problem as it is nitpicking)
4. Finally, I prefer Q3 physics to Q4 physics, oh well. (more nitpicking)

You musta played the beta or something,,,,
I can see everything just fine lol.
Even the part where you get to operate a tron style tank
flowed nicely.
screw the railgun, did you see the dark matter gun yet?
Im real far in the game , Im after the part where the strogg
capture you and try to turn you into one of them.
In my 20+ years of gaming i have never seen anything
more disturbing in a game than the part where you are being processed by the strogg... holy crap.

Quake 4 is nothing special. The graphics are great but it reminded me way too much of Doom 3. Not worth your time really until it goes down in price (or you can "find" a copy) 8-)

Quake 4 is worth the $50 clams.

This is the part where the strogg cut your legs off and replace them with robotic ones, they also stab , cut , drill
and pretty much torture you .
I did the ol "F12" to get the screen shots.
Those are actual grafx, and i have a bottom end card!
And again with the Doom 3, I noticed a big diff between the XBOX ver, and the PC ver on a high end machine and
it's night and day.
Christ, ill bet when the xbox 360 ver of Q4 comes out
people are gonna be buying it left and right , and it's gonna be the same price as the PC vers.

Quake 4 is not worth $50. I finished the game way too quickly. No replay value and unoriginal multiplayer stuff. The only thing good about Q4 is the graphics which mimic Doom 3. Buy FEAR for a worthwhile FPS on the PC.
If you think Q4 is better than FEAR I'll buy you a steak burritto. I'm talking a real steak burritto not a Taco Bell one! LOL

I hate to say it, but I'm not impressed with Q4 either. Way too similar to Doom 3. In fact, I felt like I WAS playing Doom 3...with robots. And slightly different weapons. Even some of the sounds were the same!

Nope, playing the retail release.
I'm talking MP, sometimes enemy models are hard to see against dark backgrounds.
Railgun is one of my main weapons. DMG is honestly nearly useless in MP. If they can see it coming, they can almost always dodge it.

I got over two hours into it straight and it's far from done.
2 Hours into the game is where i snapped those two pics, thats the spot where they try to change you into a strogg.
For a game like Quake, thats long.
replay value, damn was that an issue?
$50 got me 4 disc and a tee shirt
the game has a great story, ive followed the series
since the first Quake and is alot more fun than REPLAYING
RE4 for a second system months after i beat it.
Quake 3 and Doom 3 story have nothing to do with this title. It also shows you how good a machine you own lol.
I plan on setting up an "In house LAN" just to throw a multiplayer shin dig.
I WOULD like to find ( i dont play alot of pc games so i wouldnt know) a co op PC "millitary style" game as well.
How would you IMPROVE Quake 4?
I guess i would have made it so people with weaker computers can play it smoothly, but you wanted the better graphics and must now keep up your end and upgrade to see them.
You get to watch people on game sites complain, bitch and moan , nitpick every game apart because it lacks in grafx and story and whatnot. When they do give you the goods
then you see people complain about having to upgrade lol.
That or "They could have done better"... WHO could have done better? Id Software?
Or maybe i would have longer?
Wait , this is the Quake series and not an RPG.
The only thing that upsets me about this game
was you never see the strogg invading your home planet.
If you have a worthy computer and an extra $50 this game is worth it.
When you get the hang of how stuff works in the game
then you can just jump on a Quake server and fight
it out with people like me (and loose) and enjoy the replay value over and over again haha.

But i will say im a dedicated Quake series fan.

I'll agree that SS2 was a rather big letdown compared to the first one, but it was still a lot of fun just for purely blowing shit up. The end boss was HORRIBLY lame, that really pissed me off. There also weren't any interesting rooms such as the cylinder spinning room or the bouncy wall rooms in second encounter.
FEAR was an amazing game. The pure brutality of some of the kills were amazing. Some of my favorites were shotgunning a guy about three times while he was attempting to jump through a window, and smashing a man's head into a wall with the scissor kick move. God that was horrible. The scare element wasnt too bad. It had a few smartly done moments, but nothing heart stopping.
Quake IV is damn awesome. Personally, it's another great fps in my book. I'm lovin every moment of single player and the vehicles are really fun. I'm currently at the part where you have to use a hover tank to navigate the planet. Saved right at a part with two of those damn spiders =\. Haven't had much time to sink into it yet, but I've enjoyed the hour or so I've put in a lot.

It's horribly boring to me and it brings absolutely nothing new to the table except a few weapons with dreadfully slow times between shots. The grenade launcher is completely useless, not even shooting in an arc gets the grenades across a small room. Yeah some of the weapons get powered up during the game, big deal. It's nothing new. I'm near the end of the game and so far have seen no real improvement in any weapons.
Sure the graphics are great, but even with the brightness turned up to max, most of the game is still too dark to see. As usual, the flashlight is nearly useless. Reminds me of another disappointing game *coughdoom3cough* from last year, which Q4 seems to be a copy of. Basically old weapons, new maps (barely), same old tired story.

Yeah they don't meet the requirments but don't feel bad, if this game sucks as much as people have been saying your not gonna be missing much. I am personally buying it only for multiplayer and to see how the Doom 3 engine holds up after a year.
EDIT:
I tried the demo and the game is a little bit better than I thought it would be. It is alot like Doom 3, but much better. it may be worth it afterall.

I just got this for my Mac. The $50 price tag does hurt since it's so much like Doom 3, but since I haven't played an FPS since Doom 3, Q4 is keeping me entertained and worth my money so far (I also used tax return money, had I been saving up I probably would have waited for the price to drop).
Though I am dissapointed that my new G5 can't run it the way I'd like. In order to get lag free gaming I have to go down to low quality, 2x anti aliasing and 1024x768 16x9 resolution.
I had it running at full everything, and it looked great, but was really slow.
I'm still fiddling with the settings, if anyone wants to give me any advice as to what the optimum settings would be for my system that would be great.
Running dual 2.0 G5, 1GB RAM, 256MB VRAM, 20.1" widescreen LCD.
Hopefully when I get my upgrade to 4GB RAM the game will run a bith smoother.

Awww, another one of these old topics that's still under Classic Gaming and should be Modern Gaming. ;)
I played some of this game on the Xbox360 and it was pretty awesome. I'm not use to the controller on that system but I'm sure over time it'll work out real nice on that system. I want to get this title for the PC in the NEAR near future because it looked so good. I might need to go download the demo to be sure it works flawlessly on my system, even though I meet the moderate performance (Got an old video card).
