Some hackers over in Japan recreated FFX using the Final Fantasy 2 Japanese rom as a base. They even included the movies, blitzball, and the sphere grid. The bad thing is it is all in Japanese.
Talk about having some free time on your hands.

That's awesome. I prefer the FFs on SNES to any of the newer ones :) Incredible that they did this on NES :D

I more of a 2D kinda cutsy RPG'er myself so maybe this rom will get an english release. Heres hoping.

I found these in my history. It's a hard site to navigate. There are very few english characters.

Do Roms work similar to ISO's? As in have a seprate file for Text and such. Someone could in theory copy out the text from one file to the corrisponding file ( I would imagine some adjustments in timing and such would have to be made) to have a direct translation with little effort.
I'm not talking about copy the file as a whole BTW I wouldn't see those being compatiable. But opening the files contianing the text and copying that. then placing it where it should be in the File withen the rom.
so maybe?
Course now that I think about it if that were so then most everything would be translated rather quickly. such as Breath of fire 3 for the PSP or tales of eternia.

Most Japanese games only have a Japanese font which needs to be replaced with an English one.
That's a basic summary of what's involved in the translation process.

i read some of the stuff on one of the links that there are laws against hombrews.
how strongly do they get enforced?
i wanted to get into homebrewing and this news is certainly unsettling
i would think that homebrew games would be considered free advertizeing for the companies
not to change the subject -- thats one heck of a job they did -- they even have that water scene
i wonder how long of a game is it compared to the original

I believe that its completely legal to create your own home brew game but you just can't steal someone else's intellectual property. Basically you can't make a Final Fantasy game unless you have the rights to make a Final Fantasy game. However if you were to create a Googlefest Fantasy which didn't too closely resemble FF you'd have no problems.

I also think that the companies really wouldn't care if you are just messing around for your own fun, but if you start *distributing*, or especially *selling* anything that is licensed property, even modified, they may get a bit twitchy.
A lot of things would probably slip under the radar, more obscure titles and such, but modding and distributing properties that are still alive in current releases .. would probably generate a lot more heat.
It's a common sense issue :) As said well by a previous poster .. have your fun, just be double safe and call it something generic but obviously recognizable. Like 'Double Dragon' to 'Twin Dragon' .. the name is obviously never as important as the content ;)

The only stuff they've released in NES format so far is 3 different demos of the opening and another demo where you can use the airship and wander around an overworld. There's another file on the download page that's another demo where you just wander around a bit but it's an EXE file that runs on it's own. That's the only playable stuff on the download page, at least.
Has anyone actually seen any text on the page where the team claims they're actually planning on doing the whole thing for the NES? To me it appears to just be the website of a demo group that also features a bunch of those "What would Thing X look like on the Famicom?" pictures Japanese people seem to love making.

This looks sweet, I own FFX and never even beat it but I would play this! I hope it gets an english translation!
FF7 on SNES would be sweet!

Not even ISOs are generally laid out anywhere near that neatly. That's one of the reasons why so many existing translations are only for cartridge games, as sorting through 700 MB of data is even less of a picnic than sorting through a ROM.
