Something's wrong in outer space. Again.
So we're talking ``Doom,'' another movie based on a video game. And another movie with the something's-lurking-around-every-corner tone of ``Alien,'' ``Event Horizon,'' and so many others that it's surprising Dwayne ``The Rock'' Johnson's latest is as bearable as it is.
Right away, we get the point that the guy he's playing is tough. His character's name is Sarge - and in huge letters, the words ``Semper Fi'' are tattooed across shoulders wide enough to display all the titles in Frank Sinatra's complete discography. Sarge barks, ``listen up'' and ``leave is canceled,'' just as John Wayne once did. All that's missing is ``lock and load.''
There's no leave because of a gory mess found in a far-away scientific research station. So it's off to Mars with The Rock's fellow Marines, where they all encounter a doctor (Rosamund Pike) whose brother is one of this investigating team. She has some interesting theories about why ghoulish creatures have taken over the joint, and they involve the fact that all humans have 23 chromosomes. Well, maybe.
Director Andrzej Bartkowiak used to be the important cinematographer of ``The Verdict,'' ``Prizzi's Honor'' and ``Speed,'' and he keeps the uglies who end up dispatching much of the cast in shadows or low-key lighting so, to a point, our imaginations can take over. These dudes tend to sneak up on their victims' necks, and ... well, let's just say they kiss on the first date.
For a big-screen disposable, ``Doom'' has a few jolts, a few good laughs (actually, more than expected) and an attractive female lead to whom you want to say, ``What's a nice girl like you doing on a Mars like this?''
Targeted to 12-year-old boys of all ages who can sneak into an R-rated movie, it would seem to have the stuff to wrestle away the weekend's No. 1 box office slot from (sigh) ``The Fog.''
Is this a job for an adult or what?
Rated R for strong violence, gore and language

DOOM (R) Two and One-Half Stars (Fair-to-Good)
Targeted to 12-year-old boys of all ages who can sneak into an R-rated movie, this is yet another movie based on a video game. And another movie with the something's-lurking-around-every-corner tone of ``Alien'' and ``Event Horizon,'' yet it offers a few good laughs and jolts. Dwayne ``The Rock'' Johnson, and Rosamund Pike star for director Andrzej Bartkowiak. Universal. 100 minutes.

...So, anyone going to see it?

Interesting :) I'll probably try to catch it at the matinee and hope for some comedy and action fun ;)

Sadly .. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/doom/ looks like it's not overwhelmingly popular with reviewers. But what do they know about action movies and video games anyways

I went to watch Lord of War tonight (I highly recommend that!) and caught the trailer for Doom. It actually looked okay. I don't think I'm going to convince anyone to go and see it with me, mind you, but it is something I would like to watch.

Yeah, 27% on Rotten Tomatoes...pretty bad. I can barely stomach the story id puts in their games as it is.

Well nobody is more unwilling to give a VG movie a chance, but honestly i'm gonna give doom the benefit of the doubt. I'll actually spend my hard earn cash to see it tomorrow, and hopefully i won't have to commit Hari Kiri afterwards.

Here's hoping it's no Double Dragon.

Inevitably I will end up seeing this. Then again, I actually enjoy bad films. So long as it's better than Resident Evil, I won't mind.

I'll check out the DVD. I'm sure it has nice FX and sound, which to be honest is half the battle when it comes to rockin the home theater.

Yeah, I'll be going to see it and buying the DVD. As a huge fan of the Doom series I can't resist.

I was waiting for reviews, and it seems like it bombed. I'm not taking the risk though of going to see it and hating it. I'll just rent it on dvd.

Just finished Doom 3 Resurrection Of Evil on Xbox. As a longtime Doom fan, I'm interested to see whether it's "Doom"....or they wreck it. Either way, it'll be entertaining and must belong in my Doom collection. LOL

Do you what smell what the Rock is cooking? So now he gets to lay the smacketh down in Doom. What's next? A buddy movie with Vin Diesel or Hulk Hogan? Maybe a tough guy baby sitter flick?

None the less, the peoples eyebrow still manages to get roles though. Even if it's not in the WWF... oops I mean WWE. Nope, I'll never get that right on the first shot.

Well, let's hope it's not another Alone in the Dark...worst movie I've ever seen, period.

DD was at least watchable for comedic reasons.

Hey, I liked both movies so much I bought them on DVD!

Although I really hated the ending of 2.
