I just got back from watching the Doom movie. Now before we (my brother and I) went in, we promised we'd get up and leave if The Rock did that stupid eye brow thing. Thankfully, he didn't.
Now, I don't want to spoil the movie to anyone, so I won't talk about the plot line. For those of you who did see it, the storyline didn't follow the game, from what I can remember at least? I can't remember.
Overall though, I thought the movie was pretty well done, especially first person view. It made it feel like the video game, except on a huge screen.
Joelius gives it two thumbs up.

Stupid parents and their restrictions...
I like how this one review's comment about this movie "This movie's audience will be of those 12 y/o's who can sneak into the movie, and they will be obsessed with this too."

Didn't see it, but I definitely respect the idea of leaving if he did the "eyebrow thing."
Funny you mentioned it, but the main reason I figured I'd never see this movie is the first person parts. Just left a bad taste in my mouth, I guess.

It was ok, nothing special, but ok. It didn't follow the story and going into it all i really wanted was the DOOM feel. All in all they did an ok job of capturing it.
The first person scene felt gimicky but the coolness factor more then made up for it.
Worth a look, but don't expect much.
Oh and the big fucking gun really is a BIG FUCKING GUN.

A few of my friends went to see it, and they told me it sucked hard.
Which is when I asked them if they could remember what the codes were for the original Doom on the PC for 'god mode' and 'all weapons/ammo.'
When they said they couldn't remember, I informed them that the reason they didn't like it was because they were not Doom fans.

Saw it last night, pretty good movie, ending left it open for a sequel. The FPS part seemed like a gimmick but it was very cool, liked how there just happened to be a zombie with a chainsaw too. lol

Hey a real Doom fan remembers this mind boggling one, IDSPISPOPD
But if you're a true Doom fan then you'll know where Carmack got the game's name.

I have many , many times.I didn't go to the theater and pay too much to play the game.
Ebert & Roeper gave it 2 BIG thumbs down last night on their show- called it maybe the worst movie of the year.
I heard there are some inside jokes/nods to the game & its creators- there's a "Dr. Carmack", for example.
I'll probably wait til it's on the pay-per-view cheap channel.

People saw it on purpose? I could see getting the wrong theater when going to see Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, but.... *shiver*

I just bought the DVD and had to decide where to post about it. Make a new thread? Or bump one of the two from October? So I bumped the one that lasted the longest...
You know what? DOOM... is not half bad. It is exactly what I thought it would be and more. It may actually be my new favorite video game movie.
As I mentioned, I never saw it in the theater. And I am not a renter. I never rent anything. I pay money to own. If I can't own it, I don't pay for it. So of course I bought the DVD.
SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU DID NOT SEE IT:
I like The Rock. I think he makes a better action star than a wrestler. I enjoy him in most of what he does. Especially Be Cool and the Mummy sequels.
Even though I saw "Dwane" on The Daily Show back in October and he spoiled the ending telling everyone he becomes a demon, I had completely forgot. Plus, I actually thought The Rock was the hero of the movie. I was actually pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be another main character that was the real hero and the guy we thought was the hero all along turns out to be the bad guy in the final match. It was amazing how he went from good guy to crazy "let's kill them all" guy.
The First Person sequence on the DVD is extended. From how long, I don't know, but I enjoyed it for what it was. An homage to the games and a gimmick.
In the scene where Sarge picks up the Big Fucking Gun, the music seemed very DOOM-ish. It sounded exactly like I remember some of the instruments from the old DOS games.
I liked "Pinky". I remember discussion about the trailer when they showed the sequence with the demon on wheels and everyone's like "Great. What are they? Cyborgs?". Then it turns out "Pinky" was just a guy in a "wheelchair" or "wheeltorso" if you will. He just gets turned into a demon.
I want a DOOM ][ now. Even though it would star Karl Urban instead of The Rock. "I'm not supposed to die!"
Seems this movie was based more on the DOOM 3 game than the originals. Which both disappoints me and makes me happy. I don't know why.
Also, it's nice to see the monsters weren't all CGI. There was a lot of puppetry and real people in suits.
I just don't believe there's no commentary.

Got a review copy on UMD and gotta say, it was bad. The Rock wasn't allowed to be the Rock, and when you have lead characters named Sarge and Mac, you need better writers.
Defnitely didn't do anything for Doom fans other than the BFG and Carmack. Total change in plotline means it could have been called anything other than Doom.
Every scene apparently had to have someone walking forwards towards the screen waving their gun around.
Great gore in the unrated cut, and the first person view was mighty cool, but only one really great death (in the bathroom).
This one cost $70 million to make, and I didn't see that on screen anywhere. The suits were always obscured by darkness and it cheapened the whole thing.

I saw it in the theaters (free movies passes) and i was a bit underwhelmed myself.
The BFG was wasted, it should have starred "The Rock", and i think the mutant/zombie plotline should have been saved for a zombie movie.
But i will agree with PC Gamer and thier assessment that a "Doom" movie shouldnt have a big battle at the end where the main bad guys have a big kung fu fight. I believe the description was something like "having a hand to hand fight at the end of a movie like this is like having a gun battle at the end of a kung-fu movie, it just doesnt fit in".
Wasn't that good, wasn't that bad either.

While the movie wasn't that great, I did manage to snipe the top of the cardboard display from my work. I think it will make a nice addition to my new room of "Doom" LOL

Just a note, Rock is especially good at making fun of himself. I saw his Saturday Night Live show and laughed my ass off at his performances. He can be one helluva comedian (on purpose, not unintentionally), or be pretty good as as a funny character, if given the proper material.

I didn't see it yet, but i'm quite surprised at your reactions,i didn't read anything good about it on the net so far, but it seems as tho most think it's not THAT bad...
Now,as far as myself goes, i hate doom, in fact, i just hate the whole FPS genre, i never liked it,never will, and will never understand it's appeal.....so,game-wise,the movie will mean nothing to me,the main reason that i'm going to see it,and buy the dvd as well, is The Rock offcourse ( i'm not a wrestling collector for nothing aight)....if he wouldn't be in it i probably wouldn't even consider looking at it.
So it'll definatly be interesting to see how i look back at it when ive seen it, i'll probably look at it totally diffrent then those who do know the game...
On the net they bury it so deep in the ground it'll never see the daylight again lol, some sites even say it could mean the end for rocky's movie-career, but hey, that not gonna happen offcourse, he's already busy with his next movie :P )
If the movie is really that bad,it is definatly not the rock's fault, let's face it, he's a tremendous actor ( and no i'm not saying that because i've followed him since he started wrestling and i'm a fan of his), it's just a fact ,he can litteraly do it all...serious roles, comedy, you name it.
He's gonna play the leading role in the movie based on the game "spy hunter" as well, i hope it aint another bad step in his movie career...

Let's face it, when you watch something like that, you're not exactly expecting Casablanca. It'd be what could be referred to [in the UK, primarily], as a beer and curry movie.

Watched the DVD last night with my nephew and his wife. It could've been alot worse, but it could've been alot better too.
Are you sure that Uwe Boll didn't have anything to do with it? Then why all the changes in the basics of the storyline?
They could've made it way cool and accurate by showing the archeologists discovering the door to hell on Mars and opening it, then showing the hell that ensued afterwards.
Instead, they just alluded to the fact that something had happened there earlier, which made even less sense after they decided to make the demons more like zombies in Resident Evil.
So according to their version of the story, apparently the archeological dig was just a coverup for the real research that was actually going on there. Genetic experiments involving the injection of a 24th chromosome into various test subjects. Those who are more good than bad become super human, and those who are more bad than good become "demons". A few "demons" manage to get out of captivity and kill everyone, but not before Dr. Carmack (cool inside joke) manages to send an SOS back to Earth.
The Marines are called in, and you can pretty much guess the rest if you've ever played one of the games before.
So what supposedly happened there earlier, if the Marines had no idea what was going on there now? Makes no sense at all, does it? So the whole part about one Marine having some kind of traumatic memories about something that had happened there earlier was completely unnecessary.
They show him looking out a window at what appears to be the site of an archeological dig, while you hear the sound of children laughing and playing. Then you hear them start screaming while you hear the sound of "demonic" roars.
OK, so you could say that this was the first time that it had been discovered that some of the people injected with the new chromosome turned into "demons". But if that was the case, then the Marines should've known exactly what they were getting into ahead of time, even if the facts of their mission were kept a secret to them. One of them had actually been there before, as he was supposedly one of the children who had an encounter with the "demons".
So they make it a point to make an issue out of this guy having been traumatized by something that had happened there before, he ends up going on the mission voluntarily after being given a chance to opt out of it because of what had happened to him there before, and yet he and none of the other Marines are supposed to have the slightest clue what is happening there now? Give us all a freakin' break!
Now if I had made the movie, it would've gone like this:
A team of archeologists are sent to Mars to set up a new research facility near "the face" in the Cydonia region. They do this, and begin to investigate the face. They discover a door in the base of the face and they figure out a way to open it. Demons attack them once they're inside and only one archeologist manages to escape and send a distress signal back to Earth before the demons get to him too.
The Marines are called in to investigate what happened, as no further signals have been received from the research facility ever since. The only clue as to what is going on is found in the last words of the message from the distress signal: "Close the door! We never should've opened it!"
(This was sort of alluded to in the actual movie, when Dr. Carmack barely managed to get out the words "Close it!")
The Marines show up and find dead bodies everywhere, but they have no idea what door they're supposed to close. They are attacked by demons as well, but they have no idea where they're all coming from. Eventually they fight their way to the face where they discover the door and all the demons coming out of it. So they have to continue fighting all the demons while they try to figure out a way to close the door. Meanwhile they call out for reinforcements.
The story of what's going on gets back to Earth but no one believes it. Reinforcements are sent, but nowhere near enough. It is assumed that the original team of Marines has just lost their minds for some reason, and the new team of Marines is supposed to subdue the original team and bring them back to Earth so they can try to find out what really happened to them and what happened to the archeologists.
So now we've got Marines on Mars fighting demons as well as each other. Until the new team finds out what's really going on, and they send a signal back to Earth that the story about the demons is true and they desperately need reinforcements. Then a shitload of Marines are sent to Mars.
The Marines finally start kicking demon butt instead of getting their own asses kicked by all the demons, and eventually they finally manage to close the door and return to Earth. But little does anyone know that a few demons have managed to stow away on one of the return ships!
(cue the sequel)
Now see? It really wouldn't have been that hard to make a really good Doom movie that's actually based on the real storyline, instead of turning it into Resident Evil on Mars.
But no, they had to go Uwe Boll on us and fuck it all up!
