I have the japanese Sonic Birthday Pack with the coin, sonic 2, etc. My question is what is the North American set, the D.P. guide says it's was a rental, what does it look like and is it like the japanese set. I'm looking to complete my North American Dreamcast set and expect this one to be difficult, any pics or links would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
Mark

The North American set is identical to the Japanese set minus the slipcover.

The booklet is a history of Sonic with both English and Japanese writing inside. The CD is all English script. I happen to have a sealed copy of this same set (not the game, just this birthday pack). PM if you want to talk trade.

D.P. guide says it's was a rental

why would this be a rental copy?

was there a time when, you rented a game; you would actually get to take home the box and goodies to look at for a day or two :/

This is the D.P. rarity guide description of this game.

Description: Soundtrack by Jun Senoue and Wave Master. This is an incomplete, rental version of Sonic Adventure adapted from the Japanese version of the game. Internet features and memory card saving is disabled. It debuted at the Hollywood Video chain nearly two months before the Dreamcast launched, and later appeared in store kiosk kits.

That is for Sonic Adventure Limited edition.

This is the Sonic Adventure 2 Birthday Pack. There is no game here. Just the goods.....The disc is a sountrack (right pantechnicon?) The Birthday Pack is much more common than the SA: LE

Right. My pic was just of the Birthday Pack. This disc therein is the Sonic 2 soundtrack. No game.

I was at my friends store the day the 10th anniversary set came in, he gave it to me. Initially I thought there was special game included. When I opened it I found out it was just the cd coin and book. The case looks great Nice set if you collect.

I've just got the game which has all that and also came with the SA2 game. I'm still confused about whether it was officially released in other regions (USA, PAL)

You're absolutely right, I thought that before (in the DP listings) the R7 listed was a North American Sonic Birthday release, however, I see in the listings, there's no such thing. Anyhow, can anybody give me info on the Sonic Adventure Limited Edition?????

This old topic pretty much sums it up:

The case and the manual are nearing impossible to find, though I do have a small handful of loose Sonic LE's somewhere (ie somewhere in a room filled of unpacked boxes)

As far as I know, there was a "sort of a" Sonic 2 Birthday Edition in the US. What seemed to have happened with it all was that Sega produced a lot of the Sonic 2 Birthday packs to sell in Japan for what was supposed to be a very short period -- one or two days or a weel or something. After that point, they would pull the remainder and make them 'rare.'

Sega ended up producing a lot of them, thinking people would run out and snag them up. This didn't happen, and Sega was stuck holding onto a bunch of them.

Because they had all this extra stock and weren't supposed to be selling it, they sent some of the packs without the slip cover over to the US for stores to give away with the purchase of Sonic Adventure 2, thus leaving the Japanese thing as an 'exclusive' but still being able to use some of the stock as a promotional tool. The only place I know actually gave these away was EB Games.

Even giving them away however didn't do enough, and certain places (Lik-Sang for instance) now have copies you can get very cheaply.

So is there a seperate US version that is rare? Not exactly. Unless you can find one sealed with an original store sticker still on it, there is no way to prove where it came from.

And quite honestly, I don't see the point of getting both versions.
