For those of you who have a DC VGA box, you would know that certain games don't work on it. My question is if you got a Universal VGA/XGA box would the games work because I am thinking of getting a universal one so I can also use my other systems and DVD player on a PC monitor.

Yeah, the Dreamcast has an actual, genuine VGA output in it. The VGA box is merely a pin adapter that lets you connect the monitor. If you were to use a universal scan converter box, you'd be getting, at best, s-video quality on your monitor (I think that's the best the DC does, besides VGA). Plus there would be issues with timing and motion fidelity, since it would have to combine 2 fields into one frame for hi-res interlaced games (i.e. nearly all of them).

There are some vga boxes that'll display non-vga support'd games, I think the Treamcast and there's another that I can't seem to remember at the moment :hmm:
Good luck trying to locate one at this point, the good DC accessories are really drying up fast.

You'd be best off with a DC VGA box in this case - the picture would be quite a bit better.
Most DC games will boot into VGA mode even if they give the 'This video mode is not supported' error if you use a boot disc to run them - I usually use the DC Xpolder cheat device to do this, as it does boot games into VGA. I haven't found it, but I also hear there is a version of the Utopia Boot Disc that will boot into VGA, but the one i have (1.1 i think - the one with the reindeer on the title screen) doesn't. I've only ran into a handful of games that either won't boot into VGA at all, or won't do it correctly - however some people have had succes with these on different VGA boxes.
Your mileage may vary, but these won't boot into VGA for me:
Bangai-O
Rez (European release)
Atari Anniversary Collection
There were a couple more, but I can't remember which ones off the top of my head...
