Do you play a series in order? Or do you play it out of order depending on which title you purchase first?
I'm sure most people could pick up a game like Super Mario Bros. 3 first and still be good at the original Super Mario Bros. back in the day, but the way that today's controls become more intricate as the series go on the next installment might make that harder.
For instance, I bought Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal for $15 when it made it to Greatest Hits. I played this game for the first time yesterday and I don't get why this series is supposed to be so good. The jokes aren't funny at all. Perhaps, if I had played the first two games, I might enjoy it, but the controls suck IMO.
On a related note, I played through about 5 hours of Shadow Hearts: Covenant yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I'm wondering if I would enjoy it even more if I had played the first game in the series first...

Well I played the Resident Evil series in order. I guess because I got them when they first came out.

Oh yea, that's the way I prefer to play through games. For instance, I'm currently working my way through the Armored Core series so that I can observe it gradually evolve. It's the optimal way to play through a series, imo (even if the storyline bounces around, such as with Devil May Cry and Syphon Filter).
About the only time I wish I hadn't played a series in order was with Lufia, where the first game not only sucked, it also showed the end of Lufia II. Awesome job, gents. :(
Sometimes you just can't help but play a series out of order, though. I didn't even know ChoroQ (US) was ChoroQ HG4 until after I was midway through it, so I went in reverse to Road Trip (ChoroQ HG2) and Gadget Racers (ChoroQ HG) as I was able to find the games.
I also picked up Ratchet and Clank 3, but I'm holding off on opening it up until after I play through the first two games :(

I played almost all of my games in order. Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country...
Mainly because I'd buy them as they came out, or because the first installment I'd buy at full price (Ratchet/Jak), then pick up the sequel for $20 two years later.

I have played the Silent Hill series in order from 1-4 more times than I care to admit but in THIS ORDER SH1,3,2 and 4 since parts 1 and 2 are basically one complete story and if you play Silent Hill 1 BEFORE part 3 it makes part 3 all that much better of an experience.
I constantly play the RE games in order (all except part 2 I just dont like RE2 :P although ive been flamed many times for that fact LOL ).
I tried to play FF origins in order FF1 then 2 but I found part one lacking and part 2 is freaking great I just really enjoy it more than the first one.

Cant really say I play any series in order besides SOCOM on ps2. I have been playing since the first was released on day one, and have proudly been leading a clan since the first day back on 8/26/02.

This must be why people like the Resident Evil games - I've never liked the control on the things, it felt like I was already dead and controlling a zombie :P
I haven't tried 4 for the GC though - I hear it's better.
I've always had this thing with playing/watching stuff in order. There's many a show I've not been able to watch on TV since I hate continuing plotlines when they're out of order and I don't have a regular enough schedule to watch shows on a regular basis. Thank god for DVDs and Downloads ;)

I try to when possible. I think it really does help to progress with a game series either with the increase in controls or understanding the humor. I like the Sly Cooper series and I would reccomend anyone coming into the series start with the first even though the 2nd and 3rd ones are much better.

The only games that I have played in order have been the old Sierra games like Police Quest, Space Quest, King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry.
That's about it.....

I'll play in order if the plotlines are interconnected... for instance,
Xenogears, Xenosaga I, II, etc
Growlanser II, III
But if they're just using the same style or whatnot (Sekein Detsu, Final Fantasy), then I don't bother.

Ratchet and Clank is like a little kids game, my 10 y/o brother obsesses with it.
I normally play them how I get them, unless theres a huge story line I CARE ABOUT. For instance I have never played through the first MGS but have played through the MGS2/3.

If the stories tie in some way then I will (same characters, same setting, continuation plot, etc.)

Ah just remembered another one - Jak and Daxter - played that in order.......not that it mattered much!

I started playing the Zelda series with Ocarina of Time. I didn't thinK I would eventually try to play all of them, so after I beat it, I just picked another random Zelda game (turned out to be A Link to the Past). Ever since then, I've wished that I started playing them in order, for no real reason other than the cool-factor.
This is my order so far:
Ocarina of Time
A Link to the Past
Windwaker
Link's Awakening
Oracle of the Seasons
-------------
then eventually:
Oracle of Ages
Zelda 1
Zelda 2
Majora's Mask
Minish Cap

I played the Final Fantasy Legend Series (GB) in release order: I, II, III and Legend. Not a big deal I guess since there were no recurring characters.
And I've played through the GTA series the same way although since the time periods in those are out of whack it's sort of hard to keep straight. In fact it wasn't even until the end of the Catalina missions in GTA:SA that is dawned on me that she was the same character from GTA III :smash:

The 1st was good - like a sci-fi parody. Didn't like 2 or 3 'cause it got too complicated and not fun. I like simplicity.
Played Final Fantasy in reverse order. 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 - does that count? ;) I stopped at 3 because the NES-quality stories were poor.
If I can, I will although I don't obsess over it. I find that alot of the time there's not much point because the games aren't necessarily sequels to each other. It's more like "cash grab part 2 and 3 and 4" rather than a continuation of the story.

The irrational need to play a game series in order is the reason I have Wild ARMs 2 and 3 (and most likely 4 and Alter Code F in a few months) still sealed and waiting to be played since the day they were released.
Sadly, I've been working on Wild ARMs 1 since it came out in '97. In my defense, it doesn't help that my PS2 seems to hate the Wild ARMs disc. Hooking up my PS1 usually requires too much effort and cancels out the desire to start playing the game again.
