I am interested in obtaining Lunar 1 and 2 for PSX. However I am not familiar on how this game was originally packaged. I have seen people selling the game with the jewel and discs and some with a cardboard box with a jewel inside. Was there two versions released? Or are the ones with just the jewel case and games from the cardboard box package and just incomplete? Anyone know?

For both Lunar 1 and 2 there were 2 different versions. There was the Deluxe Edition, with the cardboard box, the game, and a boatload of extras. Then there was the standard version of it. The standard versions had different disc art then the deluxe edition. Thats why most of us have one of each version.

What about the making of and the soundtrack discs, was that in both versions?

There was a regular, non-cardboard box version of the Lunar games for PSX?
I've never seen them...
Was there a normal version of the Arc the Lad collection too?
Given that I don't really care about all the pack-in goodies, that'd make it much cheaper for me to own those games.

Wait a second, I know about the 'reprint' of Lunar 1 in the jewel case version, it happened a couple years after the original release when the PC port was canceled.
But there was one for Lunar 2 as well? :hmm:

I believe from just what I have seen on ebay. There was a deluxe version of Lunar 2 with the goodies and a regular version but still with the cardboard cover for the jewel cases.

no, there wasn't... Only Lunar: Silver Star Story got a non-cardboard box release - the Fan Art edition. Honestly, that version's harder to find than the original boxed version, and the artwork's kinda crappy, so you'd be better off with the original.
I think where people get confused is that inside the cardboard boxes, there are game cases just like any other PSX game (without UPCs however), and stores may only keep that part, either tossing the goodies or keeping them behind the counter. So if you see a jewel case Lunar: EB or Arc the Lad collection, its from the original set, just missing the rest.

There was a special version of Lunar: Silver Star Story released that was just in a double jewel case. This version had fanart by Armen Mardirossian as disc art and only had the two game discs. In addition, the manual will only be staple bound and not hard bound as in the original edition.
Other than that, the Lunar games have not been released without the box and goodies. Anyone selling anything else is just selling an incomplete version.
The Lunar games themselves had various different disc art as Working Designs is big on disc art variations - just ask PapaStu or Dangerboy. Just because it has different disc art, doesn't mean it's a different release version (with the exception of the above).
You can check out workingdesigns.com to double check, but I'm pretty sure that's the truth.

Actually I take that back I think 2 only had a deluxe verion still.... could be wrong. Anyone else know??
Likewise, all I've ever known of for the PSX was the two boxsets. I've seen used ones where all of the "loot" was tossed away and there's just the jewelcase.
*goes and gets his boxsets*
Lunar SSS (#1) has 2 game CDs....1 music CD....1 movie CD....the hardcover leather book....cloth map.
Lunar EB (#2) has 3 game CDs....1 music CD....1 movie CD....the hardcover leather book....gay paper map LOL ....Lucia's pendant....all of the character standees....the Omake box....slipcover for Lunar 2 demo disc (from Vanguard Bandits) Sneaky buggers at Working Designs made you buy TWO games if you wanted the ubercomplete Lunar 2 boxset, which I did. :D

Gah!
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete was originally released in a cardboard box, which included a dual PS1 case (two game discs, soundtrack and making of bonus disc), hardbound instruction manual, and a cloth map. In light of never releasing the PC version, Working Designs put out a fan art edition of the game. Which was basically just the game discs. All together, there are five variants of the disc art, and Papastu can tell you all about those if you are curious.
Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete was only released once in the cardboard box edition. Including once again a dual PS1 case (3 game discs and a making of), hardbound instruction manual, omake box (included paper map, cardboard mini standees, and a Lucia pendant. The pendant had a black pouch), and a soundtrack in cardboard case. The soundtrack's case had a place for the demo disc that was included in Vanguard Bandits. The disc art had two variants.

Hey guys I don't think he had his question answered yet.
Lunar 1 had two releases and Lunar 2 had one release, glad I could clear that up for you!

For what they all look like pics wise
Lunar: SSSC (http://www.game-rave.com/variant/lunar.jpg)
The top 4 disc art sets are the original release, the fifth set (the one on the bottom) is the 'Fan Edition'.
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (http://www.game-rave.com/variant/lunar2.jpg)
The top set is the rarer second disc art set, while the other one is the much more common one. Sorry for not taking a picture of the 'complete' Lunar2 (at the time I was worried about the disc arts and not the packaging).
