Frankly, I've never had a very high opinion of online gaming. I only played a handful of Dreamcast games online myself, including Quake III Arena and Alien Front Online. I wasn't terribly impressed with either. I still don't have a BBA though, so it was 56k.

The web browsers will still work, and presumably will always work as long as you have an ISP to dial into.

I've heard that Quake III still works, as the Dreamcast version uses the same servers as the PC version, although I haven't tested this. There is also a homebrew PSO server running, but you need to do some work to convince the game to connect to it. Beyond that, I think everything else is finished.

Quake III was awesome for its time. Today, Dreamcast online is surpassed by Xbox Live.

The Dreamcast still has the best web browser for any console, however. The Xbox web browser is decent, but it simply isn't as good as the DC Planetweb 3.0.

The Dreamcast will be online for as long as you've got equipment capable of running it. Broadband or dial-up can both be used. Only a few games have servers these days, however - they are unofficial ones. You're limited to those games that have been cracked or web browsing.

"what did those of you that had the experience think?"

It was AWESOME! I didn't really get into the Dreamcast online scene until around 2002(so that was pretty late). And I still had a blast, PSO(with the official servers up), Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Chu Chu Rocket, NFL 2K1, ect. Believe it or not there was still alot of people playing during 2002, so there was always plenty of games to join. Playing PSO and UT everyday after school back then and playing late at night on the weekends, those are still some of my favorite gaming memories.

DC online was alot better then PS2 online is even now(IMO), and even though Xbox Live is a better service I had more fun with DC online for some reason.

"what was it like for those of you that got to use the broadband adapter?"

I never got to try using it, but the games still ran surprisingly well(considering dialup), and I never had that many problems with extreme lag(provided the game was good, which I would say 70% of them were).

"are the web browsers still usable?"

Yes.

"any games online at all still?"

Yes, although I think only a small handfull.

-PSO
-Quake 3
-4X4 Evo
-StarLancer
-Sega Swirl
-Maximum Pool

And I think that is all?

I spent a ridiculous amount of time playing Quake 3 online with my DC, and it worked quite well despite being on a dial-up connection. I had lots of fun playing DC games online, notably:
-Quake 3
-Alien Front Online
-Worms
-Chu Chu Rocket

I'm a big supporter of the community aspect of gaming (wouldn't run a convention if I weren't), which is why getting a DC was so integral. Of course I had XBand for SNES, but the DC took online gaming another step further with games that actually supported online play.

Oh the hours I spent playing PSO, Q3A and Unreal Tournament (even had the KB/mouse combo going... still got pwn3d), and Sega Swirl.

Even with just dialup the connection was pretty decent. Laggy at times, but nothing horrible (even Halo 2 lags more at times).

Of course the web browser, when I was using it (never did get 3.0) was a bit thin in features, but it was cool to be able to IRC straight from my DC. 8*)
