View Full Version : Show your rare stuff - see what others think

Hmm.. for some reason I had to re-register here. Anyways, here's a little project that I've had in my mind for a while :

http://www.pelikonepeijoonit.net/ratemyrare/

You can upload a picture and a small description of the rarest items in your collection and find out what other visitors think of them. Kinda like Hot or Not or Rate my Kitten, but for game collectors.

I just got the site working, but it might need some refining still.. Let me know what you think and take part. Thanks.

Some pics can even be viewed in my profile over at www.rfgeneration.com

Thats enough for me thanks :)

Nice concept you have though.

manu_pkp-- there are backslashes appearing before apostrophes for some reason.

I like how it's focused on single items, rather than tacky rooms filled to the brim with unidentifiable gamer paraphenalia ;-)
Just a suggestion-- keep more pics (like 50 or more) on the front page.

Ah, you're the one who started his own album .. i might have disabled that at some point. Try uploading the picture in the main album 'Rate my rare'. If that doesn't work, i'll try enabling user albums again.

I tried to upload it in the main album, didn't work. In a matter of fact, I tried uploading it when I wasn't logged in under my username there, so I think it has little to do with the user album. I'll change the file size and try again later on...I'll let you know if it works then.

LOL that was me. it's non-gh which is pretty hard to find these days. Of course, since joining this site yesterday and reading through some stuff, I realize that my concept of "rare" is a little off, heh.

The scary part is that it was rating higher than my X'eye, Melty Blood discs and Gitaroo Man for a while. now they are all getting equally slammed.

Ed Oscuro

Guitaroo Man?

Anyhow, I added something unusual. Perhaps I'll post a picture of it running (playing Pathways Into Darkness), if there's any interest.

Edit: Should probably note that I uploaded a big version to the site (click on the image to resize); view the entry here (http://www.pelikonepeijoonit.net/ratemyrare/displayimage.php?album=3&pos=29).

Hmmm. Interesting to see just exactly what some people class as rare! Mario / Duck Hunt anyone? No? Maybe i'll leave that one out then...

Looks like I will be adding quite a bit to that site next week when I have the time! Nearly all my collection is either rare, or in rare sealed condition! Lol! Question is ~ What to put on first? Do I start with the rarest stuff? Or build up a climax...?

It seems to be a bit complicated. It doesn't seem to do what I want it to... Also seems to be a little bit of a mess ~ It's lacking structure. How about a short tutorial adding for new users so they don't get too confused? Wasn't sure where to stick my picture or where it would appear...

Not dissing it, as it's a great idea and a nice site, but could do with a few things tweeking ~ As mentioned above, the backslash's before each apostrophe are quite annoying

Also, what is the difference between user mode and admin mode? Why is there an option to switch?

True. Same problem here. If it were more like our very own Gallery thing, where we had our own "Space" then it would be much simpler.

I only uploaded one pic, and it kinda just merged in with the rest of the stuff. I can't begin to imagine how messy it will get with more users!

Is there a way to view a certain member's items only? I also wanted to edit the description of my picture after I posted it but couldn't find a way to edit it...

I started off by inserting it in the gallery part, but it didn't show on the main page, so I tried a second time. There's too much going on and too many options ~ All of which need explaining in some sort of FAQ or something. Even short descriptions when you roll over the links would be helpful...

I spent a day trying to find a simple free script of making such a site (Hot or Not style or similar), but all I could find was the Coppermine gallery, that isn't best suited, but works. And I had fiddled with it before, so I kinda knew what could be done. Of course the best option would be to code this kinda thing from scratch (don't have the skillz for that..). Anyways. All the choices I've done for the site aim to keep it as simple as possible. I now added a little more information on the front page of how things work. The idea is to just upload all images in the same album (Rate My Rare Rare Items) and not in everyone's personal galleries - if they're all in everyone's own album, it'll be much more difficult to browse. So, now it should be pretty easy for visitors who just want to look, rate and comment, but a little more difficult for people who actually upload images. Some people have managed to create their own albums and i wonder how.. it should not be possible. Also, the admin mode is only for admins of the site... This whole thing is still a bit under development, but I want to thank everyone who's uploaded their rare stuff already - there's some really cool things there!

That's all well and good, but what happens if you suddenly get 500 items added a day? New items added will take up the first few pages, and finding particular items will be harder.

Here's an idea ~ Is it possible to perhaps get rid of the "Gallery" section (As I don't really see that it is required anyway), and simply make a section for each console company - Ie, One for Sony items, one for Microsoft items, one for Nintendo items Etc... At least that way it will help to break it up a little...

This way, is someone was particularly interested in specifically Nintendo rare items, they don't have to sift through pages and pages of weird and wonderful 80's Japanese machines and suchlike...

Even better idea ~ How about sorting it out into regions as well? So all Japanese items are in the same place; All UK items in teh same place; All USA items in the same place Etc...

QUESTION: Are the forum headings able to be sub-catagorised (Like vBullitin boards), or are they only one levelled (Like PHPBB boards) ~ If it's the former, then you can main-catagorise into specific companies / consoles, and then sub-catagorise into regions...

Ie:

Sony Consoles
-->PlayStation
-----> European
-----> USA / Canada
-----> Japan / Asia
-->PlayStation 2
-----> European
-----> USA / Canada
-----> Japan / Asia
-->PSP
-----> European
-----> USA / Canada
-----> Japan / Asia

Nintendo Consoles
-->NES
-----> European
-----> USA / Canada
-----> Japan / Asia
-->SNES
-----> European
-----> USA / Canada
-----> Japan / Asia
-->Nintendo 64
-----> European
-----> USA / Canada
-----> Japan / Asia

And so on...

When browsing, I have to click the page number to get to the next page... When the pages start to fill up, will it automatically install a "Next" and "Previous" page arrow each side of the page numbers? If not, then I think this is a feature that could be useful, as it will soon get tedious clicking on the page numbers.

Decided to upload a few more pictures. Not the rarest of items I have, but just a few things I had pictures of on my hard drive at this very moment. May take more pics later this week and have them rated!

One thing I do find annoying is if I want to check back on all my items I have listed (Which are all over the place), is there a feature for me to search only items of my own? If not, that too would be useful, as in three months time, I may want to check back to an item I listed today, without having to trawl through and remember where it was...

Nice to see that some brief and vague instructions have since been added to the main page. :)

One thing I think you should do is perhaps only have people who are registered able to upload. I also think it is a good idea if people protect their images with watermark effects to prevent random people from stealing the pictures and listing the items (Which aren't their's) on eBay... It happens a lot on eBay as it is, but a site like this will just attract unscrupulous people to do just that!

Gemini-Phoenix
11-01-2005, 01:05 AM
Also, I preferred the stars rating rather than the words. Looked more professional!

Talking of the ratings, is there any way you could perhaps make it out of ten instead of out of five? Five is a bit vague, and is the difference between 80% and 100%, At least with an out of ten scale it is a little more accurate.

Alternatively, how about a sliding scale from zero to 100? And have people rating the items in percentages?

Question: I see some people's names in white, and others in yellow... What does this mean? I assume yellow is for members, and white is for visitors?

Yeah, hopefully now DP is back up, more people will check out this thread and take a look...

I have noticed that there have been a few pain in the arse's on there lately though, intent on dissing everyone for no apparent reason. They just don't get it. Why is it so hard to understand the whole conception? Yeah, so what, a GameBoy box may not be rare in all sense of teh word, but to someone who may have been searching for one all their life, it could be.

And many people seem to like displaying their sub~collections as well, which is nice. There is no rules that state that the items have to actually be rare ~ Most people are thankful for a "Rate my..." site where they can get a rating for their collection. Besides, as a dedicated sub~collection, some things are rarer, as not many people will have such a collection.

No one says "RARE" has to actually mean "Fetches a lot of money on eBay..."

Excellent comment and just the idea what we are aiming with the site. Thank you.

We are in the progress of making more categories (at least consoles, computers, games, other) but for some reason we can't get it to show up, yet. Also, there is a way to change the rating to go from 1 to 10, but we're not sure yet how it'll affect the current ratings. Would suck for something that has a 5 rating now still be 5 after the change.

Anyways, there's almost 200 items there now, thanks for all who have participated so far!

I've also noticed a lot of people adding a load of "Joke" rare stuff there. Which is all well and good, unless you are really gullable and believe everything you read on teh internet....

"Mmmm, Mario / Duck Hunt. Rare (apparently). I'll stick it on eBay with a BIN of $1000..."

And no one said it was an arachiev of the rarest of the rare. It's just a place for people to show off the rarest of their particular collection... If a sealed Final Fantasy X is the rarest game you have, then fair do's, it is always welcome, because that's what the place is for! Obviously, some people have rarer items than others....

I also have a black label PAL Pengo for the Atari 2600. There are only 5 known existing copies. If i have time i'll make a picture of it :D

The NWC cart is far from the rarest item on the site however ;)

(there's lots of them by comparison to say the Ultima Mount Drash!)

Now the black label PAL Pengo... that's something good. How about raise you PAL Pengo prototype? :)

Nintendo World Championships cartridge is rated as the rarest item at the moment. Can anyone top that? :)
The contributions already have...can't beat that classic gamer prejudice to all things Nintendo! LOL

Do Unreleased Protos count on this list?

As you may or may not know, I am an idiot with computers, so I do not have any images to show. I think that the best items in my collection would probaly be a signed peice of concept art from X-men: Legends, factory-sealed copies of Ico and Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman, a clear plastic display case for all my NES games/manuals (although I don't think that would count as a collectible), and a big, freakin' wooden box with Nintendo Charactors on them.

It all depends on what you class as rare? Do you rate a NES cart which there are known to be around !20 known examples to exist rarer than perhaps a factory sealed copy of PDS, where it may actually be the last one surviving???

I would personally rate the PDS rarer than the NWC cart. It's all relative to what you class as rare.

Now my very own red PS2 is actually rare by anyone's definition. It had a well documented print run of only 2000 pieces, and is made even rarer for the fact that it is an NTSC U console imported into the UK. It also has a very very low production number as well (Which matters to some people).

Now I would certainly class that as rare as, if not rarer, than an NWC cart where it is not even known how many units were actually produced. but that's just MY particular take on the definition of "Rare"

Now if Anagrama were to post up a pic of his Primal rage 32X game on there, that would indeed beat the NWC cart, as I believe there are only three known examples of that particular game...

2000 pieces is more than 26 gold NWC carts. That does not seem as rare.
