Ok, just randomly heard that Call of the Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth was released for the XBox after something like five full years in production. Managed to score a copy at Best Buy yesterday evening. The people there told me they got a whopping two copies and hadn't even had anyone ask about it.

For those of you that don't know, Call of the Cthulhu is based on a series of turn of the century stories (not 21st century, but the late 1800s and early 1900s) written by H.P. Lovecraft. These stories are the origins of both the genre of fantastic horror and most of the modern mythos of stuff like the Necronomicon. Lovecraft went further than any other author in the field of fantastic horror, coming up with an enduring genre and very realistic characters. The game is based both on Lovecraft's original Cthulhu Mythos (pronounced "K-THOO-LOO) and also on the much more recent "Call of the Cthulhu role playing game.

Now that the background is out of the way....this is one wild horror game. The game takes place in the early 1920s with a detective. It starts out cold (after the intro) with you showing up at a house where some cult is asking for you by name, then immediately launches into rather strange circumstances. As you play, your character becomes more and more scared. His vision blurs, his heart races, he tends to panic when he sees certain things. Everything is presented in first person, almost cinematically. You're unarmed, have no idea what's going on, and things just keep getting weirder. The ambiance is stunning, with a very careful attention to detail. The music is subtle, the graphics just washed out enough to look almost real. When scenes areimportant, the game drops to a widescreen format and then expands the black bars when you're in control.

You're basically a detective looking for clues to find out what the hell is going on and why. Not original, but the presentation is simply stunning. Amazing voice acting, lots of attention to how people would react, and a very disturbing visual presentation. I clocked about 30 minutes on this game today and honestly had trouble stopping playing at all. Everything about the game just screams fear in much the same way that the Silent Hill games play on your mind, but with a COMPLETELY different format. Apparently there are some nasty insanity effects too when your character gets scared enough...an actual warning not to take things too seriously is shown before the game starts....

If you enjoy Lovecraftian stuff or want a rather unique horror game, this is going to be one game you will NOT want to pass up! My wife also watched me play it and said that it's one of the creepiest games I've even shown her...and she watched all the way through Silent Hill 2 and 3. Don't miss this one....it seems to be being roundly ignored!

Anyone else play it? Comments? Thoughts?

I was interested in picking this one up. I like all the Bethesda games. I did not know it was released yet. I will start looking for it now. Thanks for the review.

I have been playing for a few days now and am having my butt handed to me, I'm not a fan of First Person Shooters, but am a HUGE FAN OF LOVECRAFT (I'm actually planning a trip to Rhode Island to pay my respects) and have had this game on reserve since early june and picked it up the day it came out. Even though it does have a few negative points (my vision and strength seem to go down even when I haven't experienced anything scary and the controls are a little iffy especially when your trying to lock a door) I must say it does do the man's work justice. They do take some liberties but lets just say that Instead of using a walkthrough all I've had to do was open up to the story that the game is based on and BAM! Problem solved. When they go so far as to make sure that a small character like the bus driver that takes you to the town that the game starts in has the same name as the one in the book, you know that they took their time and cared about the subject matter.

I definitly think fans of silent hill and fatal frame should check this game out. I've also heard that the director of Hellboy (alot of the monsters from that movie were borrowed from Lovecraft) is directing a version of At The Mountains Of Madness (one of Lovecrafts short novels) so maybe its time for Lovecraft to get even more of the respect that he deserves.

One more thing...The Library of America just came out with a great hardcover edition of his stories so if you like the game please check out the books.

I've been looking forward to this game for years (since the first videos went up on Gamespot and showed off sweet vertigo effects and whatnot). Shame it's Xbox only, but I guess it makes it one more game I'll have to pick up for the ol' green monster.

Can't wait to sink my teeth into it :(

This is one I've been watching for a while. Seems a bit too bland visually for my liking, but I'll be sure to get it eventually. The story and unique gameplay conventions are helping it out in reviews.

It's not bland, just dark. Lots of browns and greys and blacks and dark reds. Trust me....it's not visually bland at ALL. Honestly, from what little I've played, I found the visuals to be spectacular. The thing about dark graphics that people don't realize is that they're SUPPOSED to be dark. You don't want smurfy colors in your horror games do you? Seriously? This isn't a Mario Sunshine, it's a brutal game about ancient demonic forces. It SHOULD look like that, especially when the environments are mostly in the dark or shadow, everything is dirty and grimy...it makes sense. Personally I find the subtlety a better visual treat than brighter colors would be. The blurring might drive some people nuts too, but it's a physical reation thing, not a cheap graphics copout. IMO, try it and see....I think anyone who likes horror will dig this one.

Granted, I was impressed by the rain effect...well, I'll have to put this one on the list. Probably will wait for it to go down in price first, though...

Have logged in about 2 and a half hours into this and as a survival horror fan and Lovecraft fan I must say this game is CREEPY, so far. Dont have a weapon yet, but only imagine the game getting better and scarier as it progresses.

The game is dark, had to brighten my TV so I could see better when playing during the day, but when I play at night I take the brightness back down as the darkness adds to the atmosphere of the game.

So far I am happy with my latest purchase!!! :)
