Coutesy of another DP member here, I got a repro of Earthbound Zero for the NES a few months back. I just started playing it a week ago and can tell you that it is an amazing game!
It is very similar to Earthbound on the SNES in it's humor, gameplay, and storyline. I love the character designs on the enemies.
I just wondered if anyone else played it and what they think?

Just out of curiosity, what did you pay for it?

Yeah, a few months back I got two copies of Earthbound Zero from LeonK, one for me and one for one of my friends. In light of all of the people who have been buying repros from Leon and reselling them for hundreds of dollars, it occurred to me that I must've looked suspicious, seeing as how I came out of nowhere (I had only a few posts here on DP at the time) and ordered two copies of the same game. So, Leon, if you're reading this, I didn't resell them, I swear.
Anyway, yeah, it's awesome. Prior to buying the repro I had imported Mother 1+2 for GBA, despite my inability to read Japanese. I blazed through Mother 2 (the SNES Earthbound), having played the English version so many times (that monkey cave was a bitch in a different language, though), and when I got done with that, I attempted Mother 1 (Earthbound Zero). I liked it quite a bit, but got very stuck trying to get through the dungeon on the way out of Magicant towards the beginning of the game, and never got back to playing it. So when I got the repro, I played it around the clock until I got to Magicant, but then the bad memories came back, and I haven't played it since. It's a pretty hard game.

I got a copy as a birthday gift from my main man Ulticron a month ago. I've only played it about ten minutes so far (I'm waiting until I have some ample time to really get into it), but what I've played I've liked. Very twisted sense of humor. I hope one day to finally get my mitts on the SNES game.

I played and beat the SNES Earthbound, and it was a great experience. I have been thinking of getting Earthbound Zero, but haven't heard much discussions on it. I'll watch this thread, and see what people think about it, and that may sway me to get one. Great thread by the way. I hope that the resellers on E-Bay doesn't get leonk and the other game makers stop selling these games. I my opinion, they are doing the video game community a BIG favor. Keep up the good work,
Tony

WARNING FEMENISTS DO NOT READ THIS POST!!
I think it is very juvenile...yet hilarious to put in that your favorite food is pussy.
Try it and you'll laugh every time if you're not a total square! LOL

Yeah, I used to put in "shit." Absolutely hilarious results...almost like they knew I would do that because it fit so well...they must have known I'd do that.

It was done on purpose. Shigesato Itoi noticed that a favorite pastime of Japanese youth was to rename all the characters in FFIV to "FUCK", and so he peppered Earthbound with opportunities to do something quite similar.

I would like to vouch for LeonK's work. It is nothing short of supurb. Even the labels are slick. Well worth the 35$

Incidentally, I always made Nes' favorite thing in the SNES Earthbound "Poop," so he would cast poop spells on his foes, which I found nothing short of hilarious. When I went to play Earthbound Zero for the first time (in Japanese), I put in "Poop" as what I thought was his favorite thing (you can enter English characters in the Japanese version, for whatever reason), but later found out that I had put "Poop" as his favorite food. So, after a long day of fighting stray dogs and new-age retro hippies, my mom would feed me poop and send me to bed.

Well, I finally beat the game..DAMN it was hard. Decent ending and an all around memorable experience. I really hope Mother 3 finally comesout for a system one day! I'd love to see it on the DS.
I started a new game in Dragon Warrior 4 to fill in the time until Dragon Quest 8 comes out.....but man will I miss Earthbound!

i came acroos a guy with a site called
http://www.gamereproductions.com/
he charges $25 per game shipped with glossy stickers. I wanted to know if anybody here has gotten a game from him and how his quality compares to leonk's work. I wanted to get this Earthbound for the NES.

That's an awesome price, I can't see how he'd break even with them that cheap.

That is where I ordered my Dragon Warrior 5 for the SNES. He is a member here ("Nercrasaro420") and does excellent work. His cartridges look perfect and I totally vouch 100% for him.
His little daughter also has cancer so every game you buy from him helps his medical bills. He keeps in good communication with his customers too! It does take a little long because he builds his games from scratch though.

BTW- I met Stan Lee at a conference for EB Games managers back when I still worked for that crappy company. Stan Lee was completely awesome and he was very impressed that I owned so many of his comics and I could tell him what comics he drewback in 1965 and whatnot. Excellent person, much nicer than that asshole Todd McFarlane I met two years before......grumble,grumble.
