Which series do like better, Contra or Metal Slug? And why?
I prefer Metal Slug, graphics are bright but work with the game well, lots of characters, and Metal Slug! Also, I love watching the bad guys burn

Metal Slug has much better animation. The only problem I have with MS is the terrible slowdown.
They are both a heavy challenge but I prefer the look & feel of Metal Slug over Contra. Although, if I'm playing 2 players, I'd rather play Contra so we can go more than just left to right. Neo Contra was pretty decent.

Metal Slug definitely. It's simple, fun and you can play it over and over and over again.

I go for Metal SLug, although I love but Probotector / Contra series. I currently more like Metal Slug series (except 4,5 and Advance) then Probotector/Contra. But both are great series, with their own positive and negatives. Together they are by far the best in the Genre and I don't know anygame coming close to these classic series.

Has anyone played Metal Slug Mobile? Considered buying/downloading it to my mobile a few minutes ago. Not sure it's worth the money...any views on this?

Hmm, toughie. The first 4 Metal Slug games were quite nice, but then MS4 really dropped the ball and I wasn't big on the NGPC versions either. I've yet to play Metal Slug 5...
I'll go with Contra. The difficulty and replayability of Hard Corps was better than that of Metal Slug 3 and Alien Wars remains one of the best run n guns ever made. Super C and Contra are both pretty easy, but fun for a brief runthrough (and only about half the length of Metal Slug).
Oddly enough, I just started playing Neo Contra last night.
Oh, and if you dig the whole MAME thing, enable cheats, hit tilde (~), and overclock the main CPU to ~150%-200% for the Neo Geo games. Gets rid of that slowdown for you :) (though it may introduce some other bugs and whatnot)

I thought about downloading it, but I figured it would be really hard to play on the phone. I think the controls on the cell phone are difficult for almost all games I've played. It's only a couple of dollars, you could always try it out. (Also gamespot.com has Mobile game reviews, might want to check that out)

Metal Slug 1,3 are the best run n guns ever IMO.
Contra HC, along with the Treasure stuff (Gunstar, Alien Soldier) aren't far behind.
I personally despised the funky forward scrolling levels in Contra and the damn overhead levels in Contra 3, though otherwise they are damn good.

I prefer Metal Slug by far. Athough I'm not as big of a fan of the portable ones, 1st Mission, 2nd Mission and Advance. The life bar totally goes against the whole concept of the arcade game.

Overall I'd say Metal Slug, the graphics are bright and colorful, as the are the enemies and weapons, and it's got a nice fast hectic pace. Plus it's simple and easy to get into, and can be played for a few minutes or a few hours.
Though I will say that the newer Contra's on the PS2 like Shattered Soldgier, has a lot of the qualities that I love so much about MS.

Metal slug for the win. The animations are all well done and the comical feel really adds to the gameplay. It's one of the few shooters I can say that I've played through each at least 5 times.

Too different to compare I think. Although the genre is the same, I can't really put one above the other.
When I first saw the thread title, I thought "Oh, Contra of coarse"
But then I remember the few times that I've played Metal Slug on a NeoGeo and how it blows me away.
I choose both 8-)

Curse you Metal Slug Fans! You're always trying to steal Contra's Thunder. :P
Seriously though, while i abosolutely love Metal Slug (and Alien Hominid) Contra will always be my favortie series.
I have joyous memories of my youth playing Contra for 17 hours straight. Metal Slug never had that kind of addicting affect on me.
I mean sure it has better animation and you don't die from running into people, but Contra (and i mean Contra, Super C, Contra 3 and Shattred Solider) was first. It defined the genre in a way that no other game has. Hell Contra today is still though of as one of the best co-op games ever and if you play it you'll know why.
The Slug is cool but comparing graphics is insane because Metal Slug was an Arcade Series while Contra, excluding the original, was only at home. Gameplay may be better and more vaired with Metal Slug, but damned if i still don't love good ol' Contra game play more.

Metal Slug was interesting and fun, but I have to go with Contra series .. especially how it rocks on so many different platforms, even the Arcade version was great for being so old. Konami was in it's golden age with that and Gradius.
Anyone remember Rush n' Attack, I think they might have used that as the inspiration for the original arcade Contra.

Hooray, some Run N' Gun fans!
I have to vote for the Metal Slug series. It was one of the main reasons for me sorting out a NeoGeo. The animation is absolute class. It really does bring the game alive and give it a distinct personality. Excellent series overall. And I really enjoyed MS 1st Mission.
I haven't played Contra3 in about 10 years! And I must admit I've never played Hard Corps either, although these are two games I certainly want to get in the near future.
All the Treasure Megadrive Rn'Gs are absolute class. Gunstar Heroes is such a fine game.
Lately I've been playing Gunners Heaven on the PSone. Not a patch on Gunstar, Contra or MS but still a fine game in its own right.

As much as I love the Metal Slug series along with the awesome weapons and enemies it has to offer, I just have to give my preference to Contra, primarily for sentimental reasons. I was raised on Contra, I grew up utilizing the Konami Code to help me through and learn the game. I've been playing it ever since I was three years old, and I continue to play it nowadays. It's gotten to the point where I don't need the thirty lives, and I even beat it without dying at all once. That was lucky, I'm sure. Despite all the practice, levels 6 and 7 often cause me to die. What can I say about deadly traps, except if it can kill you but you can't kill it, it SUCKS mightily. Traps aside, I still love Contra dearly, and I also own and play the hell out of Super C (my third favorite), Contra III (my second favorite), Operation C (Contra made the translation to the Game Boy much better than Castlevania did), Hard Corps (which is rather underrated, IMO), Shattered Soldier (thank gord Konami yoinked the license back from Appaloosa), and Neo Contra (which, despite ruling, still has one of the screwiest plots ever). From what I've played of Contra Force... meh. And I'm not even daring to poke the PS1 games with a stick.
But hell, I still love Metal Slug too. My favorite in that particular series is MS3, for having some of the best enemies and bosses in the game, not to mention all the different routes. If you ever find yourself in a long hall with Arabian soldiers driving man-powered tanks and jet planes on pulleys, lemme just tell you that their primitive machinery belies the fact that it's probably THE most hellish part in the game... perhaps save for the "Clone Wars." I do really suck at it, though, but c'mon, the final mission is like four stages in one. I defy anybody to beat it without continuing.

I'm not big on the "one hit kills" games but "Metal Slug" wins because of the humor.
It kills me everythime i collect too much stuff and turn fat.

The Metal Slug games were better produced and had much more original...well, everything, except for the run-and-gun concept. Contra filled a void, and did it pretty nearly perfectly.
Besides all that, the new Contra games are getting good marks and I love me some Contra III/Contra The Hard Corps.
So...Contra. Better control, some really famous music (I'm split on this one, Metal Slug's music follows along more like a movie with a consistent musical theme), and, well, it's Contra.

Metal Slug no doubt about it.

Damn, this is a tough one.
On one hand, I like the weapons, bosses, animation, and humour that MS has. Metal Slug X is without a doubt my favorite MS game, I've memorized the game to the point of not losing any lives on the first 3 stages.
On the other hand, Contra has gore, bosses, and tension going for it. I have fond memories of playing Contra III, Contra, Super C, and most importantly Hard Corps, the most intense Contra game of all.
I'd love them both to death, and I'd prefer NOT to pick one, but if I had to, I guess it would be Contra, if only by a fraction of a hair.

Definitely Contra, purely for the more responsive and accurate controls, and the more intense gameplay.
I don't know, am I the only one who finds the gameplay of the Metal Slug series to be, well, a bit sluggish? :S
I've played most of the Metal Slugs either at the arcades or through emulation, and I never really got into them. A lot of love has gone into the graphics and animation of course, but the gameplay seems to suffer from it - I never actually felt that the game had the same "all hell has broken loose" sense of hovoc (some of) the Contra games provoke. Am I missing something?
...and also, for all the run'n'gun fans out there, where is the love for Turrican? :D

...and also, for all the run'n'gun fans out there, where is the love for Turrican?
Good question, I guess to some people it just gets classifed differently because:
a. It had exploration aspects
or
b. people haven't actually played the thing much or at all
or
c. They just weren't going beyond the question addressed by this thread. I added in a quip about Treasure, but I somehow forgot to mention Turrican myself...... And I like Turrican as a series better than Contra myself.
And as for the control of Contra being tighter than MSlug, I didn't feel that the control was tighter except in Contra HC, which is by far the best Contra game IMO, and certainly the only one I would hold up high with Metal Slug. It didn't try to to do any of the lame quirky shit like Contra and Contra 3 did with some of the levels (though the other levels were great), and instead saw significant improvements in gameplay, though I must admit I prefer the JP version (on account of the life bar) as I just don't have as much time to play games as some folks.
I felt that the inward levels in the original were especially awkward and affected the flow of the game IMO.
