Im sure many of you have already seen this but here goes anyway:
Iwata goes on to say that the Revolution will be a "complete failure" if it does not sell better than the GameCube, which is to date about 18.76 million units.

I'd say that's fair. For nintendo to really matter they need to out do the Cube.

That is absolutely right. In an expanding market even stagnation is dangerous, and the marketshares of the N consoles and even more so software for the systems did shrink dramatically in the last ten years.
N is lucky that they had the handheld business, and great for N that the DS does actually better against the PSP than I expected. (although the number of titles sold for the system does not look as good as the sytems sold).

GameCube? A failure?! Hardly.
Here's an example of how many systems the GameCube has sold.

Imagine that each dot is a GameCube. Now imagine 20 of that picture put together.
You get the picture? ;)

Their plan? On every box, there will be a picture of a dog with a gun pointed to its head with the text "BUY THIS SYSTEM OR WE'LL SHOOT THIS DOG". ;)

Heh, there was an Australian Sega magazine that had a page where they threatened to shoot a cute cuddly koala if people didnt subscribe. Obviously a joke but the publication copped a lot of bad press about it, and later published an apology.
So yea, it doesnt work ;)
re: original article- Sounds fair to me. If the rev did turn out to do worse than the gamecube It would mean bad things indeed for nintendo.

how is 18.7million units bad?
sure mabey compared to sony that small - but its still a lot of units
i gues when you work for a company that sells 1000s of units its kind of strange to see how that number is bad
