Is it possible for first party memory cards to corrupt?

I have the following official memory cards:

-PS1
-PS2
-Nintendo 64
-GameCube
-Dreamcast VMU
-Xbox Memory Unit

They have never corrupted on me. Yet any 3rd party memory cards I have for these systems, they corrupt 24/7, and have to be constantly formatted. They're a waste of plastic. Why are first party memory cards so reliable, and why hasn't a third party managed to produce a reliable memory card yet?

I've never had any card really screw up on me.

I've had 2 official Sony PS1 memory cards completely stop working for no discernible reason whatsoever. That's all that comes to mind, though.

It used to be that 3rd party memory cards were "unofficial" and therefore reverse engineered from the originals.

Presumably "official" licensed memory card makers would have access to the original engineering specs so they can make a truely compatible versions.

I think things are much better now than they were in the past.

At a game shop I once ran I stopped bringing in 3rd party PS1 memory cards because they were all crap!

I had a Sony ps2 memory card corrupt (lots of undeletable 1kb files) while giving a friend a Tony Hawk 4 save a few years ago. I think I just traded it in and used the credit to get another one, I can't remember. Sucked though.

As far as 3rd party cards, yes sir, I had one of those Lara Croft-shaped Interact ones (it was $3 on clearance, and this was during the PS1's prime, so cut me some slack). Got it home and it wasn't formatted to begin with and couldn't be formatted.

Yes I have, and it sucked. Luckly it didn't delate all the good games files I had on there. What it does is it makes certain saves un accessable.

No I've never had a 3rd party currupt on me. How ironic :-/

This topic seems to be following the trend that Sony makes shoddy products that break easily. I'm surprised to be hearing so many people actually having official memory cards for the PS1/PS2 corrupt frequently. Why do PlayStation owners put up with this?! I own a PS1 & 2, but I rarely play them, so I don't have much experience with Sony memory card corruption.

Yea, well it's only happened once to me with a ps1 memory card. The 3rd party one's still work good. There’s nothing more horrifying than seeing a colored box where your old game save used to be, and the title "corrupt file" at the top of the screen.

I've had both my official GC cards become "corrupt" frequently, but usually if I restart the console they manage to fix themselves, most of the time. I've lost all my hard work twice with the mem card 251 though, which really blew chunks cause I had put a lot of hard work into F-Zero and various other titles.

I've never had problems with any other cards though, third or first party. All my PS1 mem cards are third party and I have never had a problem with them, even when using IMBNes, which I thought had problems with third party cards initially.

Never had a memory card go corrupt on me. In fact, the only save a distinctly recall ever losing was my Dragon Warrior save on my NES. Friend pulled the plug on the NES and killed my save 8(

I had my xbox hard drive corupt on me once... turned out i was sucking way too many amps out of the powersupply with my cold cathodes... but i don't think that's the same issue.

From what i understand, the 3rd party psx cards used memory compression. Poorly. It would compress the saves to save space, but end up corrupting them in the process. It didn't help that they used the cheepest flash memory they could find and that the compression algorithims didn't have an error correction routine. The only issue i've had with a 1st party card was with the gamecube, i lost a few games off of that.

1st party no... 3rd party hell fucking yes.

Good old RPG saves that consisted of 30 hours plus. Did Interact fuck up my ability to finish certain RPGs without back tracking for hours on end... YES!

LOL.. I knew there would be a post like this from you in this thread.

Anyway.. the only memory card I have had that went bad was one of those 8x size or whatever cards you could get for the PS1. Was not official at all, and it used to delete my saves all the time. Found out this was a common problem.

I have never had an official card for any system go bad on me.

So far for me it happend only once, with an official DC VMU. After copying savegames over to a different VMU, the file of Psyvariar 2 was corrupted :(

I've had an official PS1 and PS2 card die on me. The PS2 one sucked because I was archiving all my old PS1 game saves on it, as well as lots of RPGs. My PSO save bought the farm when my Xbox died, but that was some sort of motherboard issue. I lost an old PSX to a third party memory card. I plugged it in for the first time and it fried the whole system. That was years ago and in retrospect, it probably blew an internal fuse. Oh and I remember having problems with my Sega CD ram cart. If you plugged it in after a few months of not using it, it was empty, but as long as it got regular use, it could save fine.

Yes, It happened to me once. But it wasnt the cards fault.
Tekken 5 and Tekken Tag has a bug in the game. If you leave on autosave, it can corrupt the file on the card.

As for the PS1, it happened once with a save full of gameshark cheats.

I have had a playstation 2 memory card lose files/or files unaccessible. That was supposedly due to some weird demo glitch, IIRC. This sucked because I had a multi-season save from a football dynasty.

I had a Gamecube mem card kill a sweet season of baseball on me. Luckily, baseball is only the longest season to play!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That bit hard.

Those are the only ones that I ever had issues with.

On a ninty, no corruption on originals (but did suffer some dust related issues on the N64). Third party ones corrupt quite easily (madcatz ones too).

On a PS1 no original corruptions, but thirdy party corruptions. On a PS2, both original and third party corrupt (though the originals here do corrupt less than the "fake" NGC ones I must say. The fakes corrupt just as much)

Never had an XboX, never will :P

Thankfully, I've never had a 1st party memory card die on me.

But because of faulty 3rd party cards, I will never buy them again.

1st party all the way now.

I do have a PS2 memory card from Sony with corrupt data, and I can't erase it. However, the memory card still works fine.

only psx card I ever had die was one of those lara croft ones (I bought 2 on clearance for 1$, and even gave one a black eye so I could tell them apart) it lasted about a year then just crapped the bed.

now I'm a bit scared of my sega cd memory cart currupiting I did everything in sonic cd and had some insanely short time attack runs on there...

(going to go check now...)

I have one of those banana yellow Nyko PS2 memory cards for RPG backup purposes, and it hasn't failed me yet... knock on wood.

Passing on the Tekken autosave bug info to my boyfriend, who is also the proud owner of a 1st party Xbox memory card. Anyone have any trouble out of them?

Dunno if this was said, but if you played PS2 ddr and turned it off immediatley after saving, BOOM CORRUPT MEMORY CARD.

Not really. Nintendo says RE4 will not work with third-party cards. Neither will the new Zelda 2006. If you have a 3rd-party cube card - you're out of luck.

I have one PS1 and PS2 card - so far nothing's gone wrong.

Ditto!

The PS2 controller sucks. Any game released for the system will instantly have shitty controls.
The PS2 version sucks. It looks and plays like shit, with worse graphics, a terrible control scheme.
All Sony does is make a system and whore it out to casual gamers, they don't even develop many games
Sony is the one who deserves a $ sign - with their constant shitting out consoles
What? The PS2 did suck ass.
The PS2 sucked cock, just like the PS1.

The PS3 will suck.

Can you lay off the anti-Sony hatred? Please? It's disruptive not productive. Thank you.

I've only had one memory card give me problems. I bought a used PS2 memory card from gamestop (to save a measly $5, I'm a cheap bastard to a fault I suppose) and It was always having problems getting registered by the systems. At one point, I was playing Digital Devil Saga, and as I was saving my game, It said "corrupted file." I freaked out a bit, but I overwrote the file without any problems. I then promptly moved all my files around to different cards. :/
