View Full Version : The Final Hours of Woodgrain

Gang,
it's like moving out of an old house: look it over one last time, absorb the memories, then look toward the new dawn ahead. Well, in this case, it's more like "the midnight ahead" (you'll see). We originally chose this wood and parchment theme for its warm and homey atmosphere - and I will miss that - but it's time to move on.

As mentioned in the "public service announcement" at the top of this forum, the forum is adopting the style of the DP site.

It's been a fantabulous six months of woodgrain! Take it all in, take a deep breath, and prepare for the next wave.

I think the new look should have an alternating text and background color from black and white to white on black...it'll give it that great strobe light effect!

Oh well, we might as well hand the woodgrain over to someone who can use it.

Are we evolving in step with the 2600? Is pure black plastic the next background? Will we get an additional brushed metal band in 2005?

If so, please stop before reaching "XE" stage.

Actually we're going to have Jet, Indio, Glacier, Fruschia, Arctic, Spice, Platium, and Red version available shortly. :D :D Gold was planned until someone pointed out gold is used only to celebrate 50th anniversary and Atari's only 30. (27 for the 2600)

If so, please stop before reaching "XE" stage.

Why not? Ok it may look ugly but it should be much smaller than the Jr's. With the 2600 on a single chip, the next gen micro-2600 console would be smaller than the cart itself! Once that's accomplished, Sean would have to reinvent the 2600 multicart that is smaller than the micro-2600 and then we could pack the whole 2600 and games in a little package that makes GBA look bulky and heavy.

When can we expect access to be denied to the boards for this changeover?

Only for about an hour, between midnight and 1am Pacific Standard Time. SOON!

On a more game related note, I like the new look. It kinda looks like Dark Land from Super Mario Bros. 3.

It's also inspiring me to switch avatars.

I like it, too...change can be good though it may take me a day or so to get used to the new look. You know what they say...everyone looks good in black...

Can't say I'm all for the change, it reminds me of |tsr's site that's still kicking around. It seems cool to look at for a little while, but after reading so much my eyes start to get sore. Still, much faster loading than the woodgrain, and certainly easier to refresh in the browser.

While I understand adding a second theme would make updating the entire site harder I'm going to request a reverse black text on white background anyways, for the sake of user feedback. :D

I wish I lived in Kaine's dimension. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Hey Jaime I think he means how the first generation of Atari 2600 systems had wood grain and the second generation was black.

Much like our dear forums.. I think.

I'll always have a place in my heart for woodgrain. I'll remember it fondly. The new looks is nice though

It looks dark and depressing...

But at least my avatar has a background to blend in to now.

It looks great, but it'll take me a little while to get used to...can't say it's any easier on the eyes for me, but hey - it's never been hard to read (for me anyways)

Does that mean that the next incarnation of DP forums will be NES colored with red and grey? :) Or will we go with something else?

Wow. I see alot of people like the new look. Myself, I am having trouble looking at it. I have problems with glare while night driving, and this is almost the same effect on my eyes. The white is gleaming off this pitch black background. Hope I can get use to it.

Wow! This is one of the fastest boards I've ever seen!

It's still a little buggy, though. A little while ago I was locked out entirely, and would receive only error messages when trying to access any forum page.

Hang in there, because we're doing little tweaks today; Larry did a bunch of performance stuff earlier and that's probably what you were caught in the middle of.

Please log any bugs you see in at the top thread "3.0 Online" so we can knock 'em out.

Thanks again for the feedback, all!
