Got a card in the mail today. A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit aganist Sony in both the US and Canada about PS2's that had disc read errors, damaged games and/or DVD discs, and had to be sent in for repair or was too expensive to do so.
But to file a claim you MUST have proof of purchase -- a receit, a credit card statement, something. And it must be new or bought for you new.
You can get $25, a game from a list, or free or reduced cost repairs by filing a claim.
More informaiton and the claim form are here:

I'm glad I keep my reciepts.
Considering I've spent $1200 on PS2s over the last 5 years, even if Sony pays me $150 for my 6 reciepts, they're still coming out way ahead.

As much as I hate Sony, I've never had an issue having any of my PS2s repaired by one of their service centers. I'd simply call Sony up, tell them my PS2 is DRE'ing, they'd write up a work order, tell me where to ship the unit, and I'd have it back in a few days. Didn't matter which model, how old, or what.
Sucks so many people had a harder time than I did.

If you do not provide a store receipt, credit/debit card statement, or cancelled check showing the purchase of a new PS2 Model 50001 or 50010, but provide the serial number of your PS2 on the claim form, and SCEA confirms that this serial number belongs to a PS2 shipped within 16 months before October 19, 2005, you are eligible for the repair or replacement of the PS2 for $41 ($51 Canadian) plus the cost of shipping to the authorized service provider.

Wow, this is great!
If only if I hadn't thrown my receipt 5 years ago!

Wooo-Fucking-Hooo way to stick it to the man. Of course now this settlement is just tenative and won't become final until it is deamed acceptable by the courts in april, but still Hoo-Rah.
My biggest gripe with Sony has always been their crap-tacular quality and now, maybe they might actually take the hint and build the PS3 right. Although considering the company's crumbling financial state i still won't be suprised if future Sony products still suffered from fatal flaws like this.

What % of people had problems? I'm not defending Sony by any means, but I've never had a technical problem with any console I've ever owned, from the VCS all the way to the PS2 and Xbox. The only major consoles I didn't get during the entire time were the Sega CD and Saturn. I've had two playstations and one ps2. They were nothing but reliable to me, same as my Xbox and Dreamcast. The last game component that failed on me was a Genesis controller back in '92, and that was probably because a friend spilled Dr. Pepper on it.

At least they didnt get away with this crap, I'm glad about this. Apple should take notes with those nasty ipod nanos and all the scratching. All I ask for is a sleeve, a small cheap ass sleeve, but no.
So, got a little carried away.

This is what happens when DP dies, people don't get the info they need.

Yeah, up until LITERALLY a week ago I saw my receipt kicking around, and I bought mine in 2003.
