Are you up for a challenge?

The Humans for Genesis, although I imagine other versions are the same. I cannot beat stage 51 "Keep your wits about you" and it's driving me crazy! Help me find the answer! First one to post the solution here wins the challenge! 1000 meseta.

Stage 51 password:

:help:

Updated to $10 paypal bonus. If this isn't enough incentive, then I give up :) You have to understand, this is one of those things that I want to know before I die.

Ugh I know for a fact that this will be near impossible...

I remember my Dad getting me this game for the Amiga back in the day, and it was one of those games you Loved but Hated...
It was a great idea, but some of the puzzled are just ridiculous and ended up making you smack the power button in frustration...

Maybe you should raise the bounty to 999999999 meseta! :P

I believe this is the same game as Evolution: Dino Dudes for the Jaguar, and I think it is also on the Lynx.

I really enjoyed it, but couldn't get past level 20 or so :(

Gee, this is a toughie. A manual sure would be nice.

I think I almost got it, though...

YES!!! I have it! And I would have a lot sooner, if I had known that weird blob thing was a rope. (At first I thought it was a pile of kindling for the fire!)

Start by stacking the humans up to get the spear.
Once you get the spear, jump three of them over the gap. Take one of the remaining down to the left side of the bush.
The other one uses the spear to get over to the rope.
Put down the spear, pick up the rope and drop it off the left edge of the platform.
Pick up the spear and drop it off the left edge of the platform.
Drop down to the left, pick up the rope, stand on the very edge of the platform, and throw the rope. It should land directly on top of the bush, where the other human can get it.
The human with the rope can now climb the first ladder, walk over so he's right above the guy with the spear, and lower the rope to him so he can climb up (with the spear).
Bring the rope back up to the top and throw it over the gap; then jump the two guys across using the spear.
Three humans can then stack up and one human can climb to the top of the platform with the rope. That human can then lower the rope so that the remaining human can climb down, release the sixth human, and still allow both of them to climb up again.

So far so good? You now have all six humans to the right of the gap on the top level.

Lower the rope down the right side of the gap and have five humans climb down. Leave the spear at the top with the rope guy.
Throw the rope over the gap and then jump the gap with the spear. Bring the spear down the first ladder and leave it somewhere near the rest of the humans.
Lower the rope once again and have five humans climb down. Then, throw the rope over to the right, use the spear to jump over to it, and then lower the rope to the humans so they can climb up again.
All you have to do now is drop all the humans off to the right, make a 5-level stack, and have a human climb the stack to the red stone!

I'm sorry, but this solution DOES NOT work in the Genesis version. I need the Genesis solution, because that's the version I own (and they don't make a US snes version I don't believe). If it were all that easy, I wouldn't have needed the help.

The problem lies in that you can't make the lower jump to the rope, it's too far of a fall. Watching that video, there's obviously some physics differences between the two versions. Jumps and throws are quite different.

So my offer still stands, but I have a hunch that this level may be impossible, a victim of bad testing.

Hmph. I bet it works in the PC version, too.

EDIT: Crap. It doesn't. Well, at least you can be sure that it's not a mistake in the porting of the Genesis version, then.

I gather the only way to get past a bush is to burn it?

Well then, I change my mind! I figured it was a mistake in the port! I believe it was a pc game originally (which is how I played it as a kid). I tried to run the pc version, but it was really slow, I think I need a dos emulator or something. If you're saying that solution doesn't work in the pc version, maybe there is another way.

Yes, AS FAR AS I KNOW there is no way past a bush other than to burn it.

I did find a faq
http://gamesover.com/walkthroughs/humans.txt

notice it stops at level 51 :)

Things like this usually came out on the Amiga first, I think. Anyway, I got the PC version from Underdogs, and while it runs nicely under DOSBox, it's still fairly slow (plus there's no savestates ;) ).

Just loaded it up under DOSBox, like you suggested, and I think I've figured the level out.......for the PC version. I cannot get this to work in the genesis version.

Take a look at this screenie
http://www.whoiskeel.com/junk/humans_000.png
I drew a yellow line where I threw the torch. In the PC version it seems you can throw "through" the wall, which you can't (or at least I can't) in the Genny version. While the Genny version seems much more accurate to the PC version than the snes version, I guess the physics are just a bit different.

Some time in the near future I'm gonna try and get ahold of this for Amiga emulator and see what's up.

Jorpho
11-15-2005, 09:18 PM
Gragh. I'm not going to spend any more time trying to throw that torch at the wall. Almost made it through, once, but somehow it bounced off the other side... For whatever reason it's far easier to throw the spear down the gap.

Odd how three different ports ended up so different. Someone should write this up.

I'm stuck in the exact same spot -- Level 51, with no way to toss the torch back to the rest of my party, and with no apparent way to survive the drop to get the rope. It sounded like Jorpho's link might have offered help, but it 404s and isn't in Archive.org, and GameSpy seems to have nuked all their old threads.

Has anyone cleared this level in the Genesis version?

EDIT: Aha, I found a YouTube video that clued me in to the right answer. Apparently the US manual doesn't bother to document the fact that, if you hold in the opposite direction when you're in the throwing stance, your caveman will rear back and throw in a higher arc. Do that, and you can easily toss the torch onto the platform.

How ridiculous that they didn't bother to mention that! I wonder how many people gave up in disgust; judging by the number of posts on the Internet about Level 51, I'd say quite a few. Then again many people probably gave up in disgust much earlier than that.
