View Full Version : What games (if any) really pushed the CD32?

I just got an NTSC CD32, and I think it's an interesting system. I had no idea this thing even made it to the Staes (no matter how porly advertised and distributed.) I haven't had TOO many problems yet with PAL/NTSC issues, but we shall see (keeps fingers crossed.)

QUESTION... Did any games really push the CD32 hardware? A lot of the games seem like SNES games with CD sound and FMV tacked on.

Guardian seems like (very early) 32-bit with its basic polygonal graphics... could the CD32 do more? More detail? Shading or texture mapping perhaps?

Alien Breed 3D seems like a pretty good DOOM clone that couldn't have been done on the Sega CD or the SNES, no matter how many FX chips you stuffed into it.

Can anyone recommend some CD32 games that really showed what the system could do?

THANKS!

Gloom is the first one that springs to mind. It's a block Doom clone but it's still pretty impressive - especially as you can walk up to a hidden arcade machine and play a rudimentary version of Defender (I think).

Is CD32 the Amiga computer in a box?

Yea, the CD32 is an A1200 with a CD-drive and an extra chip.

Besides the 3D games which have already been mentioned there is also Fears. 2D-wise, Flink pushes the machine to the limit, as some parts become rather slow when a lot of sprites are onscreen simultanously.

In theory the CD32 could do texture mapping, but it's way to slow to implement it in a game - well, Liberation has some kind of texture mapping, but it looks extremly ugly. See the FPS games, they're pretty much unplayable with all details turned on in fullscreen.
