No word yet on a US release date, but there is a new Earthbound game set for Japan!
Mother 3 Set For Spring
Nintendo opens revealing site highly anticipated sequel.
by Anoop Gantayat
November 7, 2005 - Last week's buzz regarding Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance suddenly became a roar this week as Nintendo opened a website for the game. The site, accessible at Nintendo Japan's official page, gives a first look at the game's logo and promises a Spring 2006 Japanese release. The game will be priced at the standard Nintendo GBA price of 4800 yen. A US release has yet to be announced.
Known as Earthbound in America, the Mother series is a favorite in Japan. Nintendo has only produced two entries so far, one for the original NES and one for the SNES, both of which were later brought to the Game Boy Advance on a single cartridge. Nintendo has been quiet about Mother 3 since its announcement a couple of years back, but with news of a Spring release, we expect details to slowly leak out over the coming months.

I also heard something about this a few days ago. All I can say is that I can't wait.
I still want them to release Earthbound 64 though.

EB64 DD, as some may recall, may be on some dev 64DD disks a guy named Corey found...I just wish he could get the dev tools to read them to be sure. The Assemblergames forum is the one hosting the main discussion on this right now.

I've been waiting for this for 11 damn years. I'm actually a bit afraid of playing it....I'm not sure if it can live up to the standards set by Earthbound. I'm still extremely excited though!! :D

Well, here is an interview that Starmen.net translated:

That, along with the rest of their Mother 3 page, should have all the information people know about the project so far.
This is the original page it was taken from, as you requested. The words of Shigesato Itoi himself.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh SNAP!
I hope they decide to release it here. I have a feeling that it would get a better reception this time (considering it's predecssor's cult-classic status).

And to think they're still releasing it for the GBA instead of trying to tack on some sort of stange touch-screen features! (Granted, I'd be quite intrigued by what touch screen features the sequel to a game whose player's guide included scratch-and-sniff cards might have, but never mind.)

A GBA release also means a DS release because the DS can play GBA games. But the main problem is Nintendo of America has demonstrated time and again, that they hate the Mother series. They finished the port of the NES Earthbound, yet never sold it. Similarly, the GBA Mother 1&2 was never brought to the USA. Both GBA games would sell well in the USA, so my only explanation is that NoA hates Earthbound

Personally, I think that NoA doesn't hate it (as I've pointed out in other threads with links, people at Nintendo have noticed the following it has started to receive here in the states) but that it simply will take a long, long time to port it. I wouldn't doubt at all that Earthbound 2 will find it's way over here, and I also wouldn't doubt that it would be shortly after the release of EB0/1.
Personally, I kind of wish it was on the Nintendo DS. As much as I'm sure that it doesn't need touch-screen features, I think the touch screen would be nice for menu navigation in a classic style RPG.

I don't think that the translation would take a long time, and I bet NoA could get willing cheap workers from the Earthbound community.

The thing about the translation is that the storylines, if I recall correctly, don't match up completely. Since they both rely on jokes that are cultural, it isn't a simple 1:1 translation. Along with that, while Nintendo most certainly could get people to translate the game cheaply from the community, Nintendo would never let one of their games be translated by non-Nintendo employees. And I don't think they would hire people just off the notion that "I love Earthbound and I work cheap!"

You can read the true story of NES Earthbound at http://www.lostlevels.org/200407/200407-earthbound.shtml . I think the gist is that restranslating Earthbound's extensive printed documentation for the French-Canadian market would have been too costly for a niche game being sold at the end of the NES's life.

Am I the only one that thinks that since we didn't get Mother 1+2, that theres no chance in hell we'll get Mother 3?
In fact, I'm gonna go ahead and not even have hope to give up on this one. We aren't getting it.

Even if we don't get it, someone WILL do a translation hack, you can practically count on that.

I too fear this. I also fear the fact that this is the 4th system that they have announced it for (officially or unofficially) including the N64, N64 DD, Gamecube, and now the GBA...hell it was even speculated for the DS I think.
Here's hoping we see it in the next 3 years.
It's about god damn time.

Unless the developers are cruel and vindictive and use some $deityawful compression scheme on everything.
