View Full Version : Games you will never let go

I did a search and didn't find this exact topic. I stress that this is not a desert island game question.

People sometimes hold on to valuable things, even after they have long forgotten the context or hobby. Not everyone who has a certain valuable baseball card or comic book is a collector. I don't mean this in terms of monetary value alone, but it's a good analogy. My question is:

What game(s) do you see yourself keeping until you die (or are near death), even if you almost completely drop out of the hobby?

My choices would be:

1) Radiant Silvergun - Saturn
2) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - PSX
3) DoDonPachi - Saturn
3) The Legend of Zelda - NES
4) Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo - Duo
5) Panzer Dragoon Saga - Saturn
6) Rez - PS2

Now some of my choices do fall into the high-resale (at least in the now) club, but I also have a personal attachment to all of them.

Earlier this year I picked up a complete, very good condition copy of Zelda for $3. It even had the map. I was so thrilled. It was like when I got it the first time. It is a long story as to why, but as a kid I actually got the game months before I had access to a NES. I poured over the materials so much that they were ingrained in my head. I don't remember the terms, but I sold it a few years later for too little I'm sure. Don't think I will ever let it go again.

Castlevania: SOTN is probably the game I have invested the most time with of all the games I own. Rez is a close second in that regard. Arguably my two favorite games ever. Reason enough to never let them go.

Shmups are one of, if not my absolute, favorite genres. I like vertical better than horizontal (as evidenced by my avatar), and consider DoDonPachi to be the cream of the crop. Best pure shump ever, hands down.

I remember searching the local stores for weeks for Panzer Dragoon Saga. The first shipment in my area had sold out and no one kew whether they would get any more. Then, I walked into an EB one afternoon while the clerk was unpacking his shipment. Out come 2 copies of PDS, and thankfully one was for sale (he took the other one).

Dracula X is that mystical game that first enticed me into searching out those early 90's imports I used to read Halverson's raves about in Gamefan. Had to have it then, have to have it now.

Finally, I lived on ramen for a month in college solely because of Radiant Silvergun ($130 busted me pretty good at the time).

Sorry so long winded, but I was thinking about this today as a realized that I was not playing or buying as much lately, by a large margin. I really think the above games, with some others I'm sure, may end up being a hidden treasure for my kids someday when I am too old to care, after everything else has been sold or given away.

Contra for the memories
MGS3 for the only game to make me "feel"
Killer 7 for being Art at it's finest.

Interesting question. I always considered 7 my lucky number so I'll limit myself to 7 choices...

1. Super Punch-Out (SNES)
2. Super Metroid (SNES)
3. MVP Baseball 2004 (GameCube; unless it's MVP Baseball 2005 for XBox)
4. Tempest 2000 (Jaguar)
5. One of the Namco Museum titles for classic arcade goodness, probably volume 3 which has Ms. Pac-Man...is Mappy on that same volume? If so, that's the definite choice.
6. One of the Medal of Honor games, not sure which one...maybe the first one for PS1.
7. A Mario game...gotta have Mario. Again, not sure which one...probably Super Mario World for the SNES.

I'm never gonna give up any of my Grand Theft Auto or Pokemon games. Too many good memories, and they wouldn't get much if I sold them. LOL

If I completely drop out of the hobby, I'd say everything is fair game. However, I don't see that happening. Whether or not I plan on keeping something forever is, in fact, my biggest criteria for whether I get something in the first place. I don't like getting stuff for temporary purposes.

2> Fable The Lost Chapters (XBox)
3> Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (PS2)

5> Capcom Classics Collection (For every little game on there)
6> Capcom Generations Vol. 2 (Saturn) Nuff said...
7> CastleVania Bloodlines (Simply because this was the main reason I went back to Sega back in 1999)
8> Silent Hill (Original release) First one still bugs me out.

Everblue 2 (PS2). Play it & you'll know why.

Diablo (PS). I just started my 5th play-through of this a few days ago. I've beaten it at least once w/ each of the 3 characters, & now am using my Level 25 warrior. The game just doesnt get old for me.

Champions of Norrath (PS2)- same reasons as Diablo. The random dungeons add lots of replayability.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (PS)- I was just in awe of how big this game was for its time (1996?) An epic game w/ a great plot, action, & badass "hero".

Little Samson - to date this is the most I have spent on a single game, and it's just too fun

Super Mario RPG - for the memories. Lots of good times with this game

Earthbound - I picked this up when Walmart was clearing out thier SNES titles for cheap. It was the last game they ever had in stock for SNES. Having rented it before (years before) I remembered not liking it too much, but I bought it anyways cause it was cheap ($29 CDN new). Well I gave the game another shot and enjoyed it, sucked me right in. I played this game constantly, and again shortly before the gamecube hit shelves.

Super mario World/smw2 - memories and great games

DKC 1-3 - I remember reading about the hype gathered around the first in NP, and got it that following xmas. I still remember playing it all night at my grandmas that day. #2 i picked up many years later, probbaly sometime in 2000. I bought dkc3 from a friend for $35 shortly after it came out, which was a steal since he paid $95! LOL

Super Mario 64 - The first game _I_ owned in 3D, and great to boot! also played this all night, literally, on that xmas.

Ico/Shadow of the Colossus - I dont think any games, other than GTA: SA, consumed me and amused me more than these 2 games. Theres just something magical about them, as if they were created with the most care and effort put into any game.

GTA: SA - This game consumed me for the 3 days it took me to beat... and I loved every minute of it. The world is just so huge, it was unlike anything else at the time.

SMB1/Skull & Crossbones - I remember playing these all the time, and co-op with one of my parents in SC was great fun. Many memories

Kickle Cubicle - Ha, this game drove me AND my mom nuts, yet we always rented it and played it. Man, did I hit my nes several times because of this game!

other than that, just a few ordinary nes titles, and some of my CIB nes games, just because they are really fun or worth something, or both.

Rez (DC) - Imported the European version along with Shenmue II. Immediately got caught up in the game, and to this day it's still the one I pull out whenever I need something to mess around with for a short amount of time. There's nothing quite like this game.

Silent Hill (PS) - Scared the crap out of my in the day, and still the best of the series. (And that's saying a lot, IMHO.)

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS) - Hands down, my favorite console game of all time. Last summer was the first time I didn't re-play it annually since it came out. I love Disgaea and the Nippon Ichis, but they still haven't captured me like this game did originally.

Resident Evil 4 (GC) - Still pretty new, but I played it through three times in succession after its release. Never have I liked a game enough to sit through it that many times, but this one is certainly an exception. Every section is exciting, no matter how many times you play it.

Gitaroo Man (PS1) - Saved up money for the game because I was assured I would absolutely love it. And I did! First time I overpayed for a game but felt it was entirely worth it.

Beat 'em and Eat 'em (2600) - I don't collect for the 2600 much anymore and sold off a good chunk of my games, but this one was just so off-the-wall and goofy that I held onto it.

If we're allowed to include PC games, I'd add Quest for Glory 1 & 4 and both System Shock games.

I don't part with anything in my game collection unless I really don't ever want to even look at it again. I have games I may never play, but still want to keep. So if I had to think of my all time favorites that I still play and will be burried with it would be:

Kaboom (2600)
Circus Atari (2600)

I have more favorites, but these will be in my casket with me.

The topic of this thread is "Games you will never let go" but I don't get the question. What do you mean by never let go. Like go out side, go to the mall, go to a R rated movie or go out with a certian person? I am confused.

Just kidding. I will probably always hold on to my Super Mario World and my Ratchet and Clank, as since they are the games that I have put the most time into.

I have games I will never let go for three reasons: Either, A) Because they are great games and I enjoy them loads (Space Channel 5; Gitaroo Man; Vib Ribbon; Parappa The Rapper Etc)

Or,

B) Because they are now worth a fortune, especially in the condition I have them (Ie, my factory sealed Suikoden; Paper Mario; Vandal Hearts; Star Ocean II; Space Channel 5 Part II Etc...)

Or thirdly,

C) Because I paid a fortune for them in the first place (Ie, Steel Battalion; Rez; Evolution II Etc...)

But the I have always vowed never to get rid of anything in my actual collection, unless it is actually damaged or unless it is a double, which I have plenty of in my trading box at the moment...

There are some games I value more than anything ~ Not monetry value, but sentimentally. Final Fantasy VII because I spent so long playing this, and I have good memories of it. Theme Park (Mega drive) because I saves so very long for it. Zelda: Link's awakening ~ Possibly the best game ever made... Plenty of games I can think of that i'd never part with...

#1: My weathered, battered copy of The Legend Of Zelda. Just too many good memories. Hell, almost got me out of going to church once.

#2: Road Avenger: Stayed up all night once with my brother trying to beat this, finally did it.

#3: Rampage (NES): Me, My Brother and His Friend, Drinking Crystal Pepsi and then after our marathon Rampage sessions we'd watch Waynes World.

#4: Auto Destruct: First game that blew me away. Also just so damn fun.

#5: This one's a package deal. My hacker modified Commodore 64, Test Drive, Aliens, Jeopardy, DejaVu, and ISEPIC'd copies of Beach Head II, Multi Disks, and most importantly, Castles Of Dr. Creep.

What? It's not a matter of when I drop out of the hobby, it's a matter of them prying the games from my COLD, DEAD HANDS.

I'd have to go with a grab bag all the great 16-bit era titles, most of the good stuff from the 32-bit era and up, and many 8-bit era games, mostly Famicom stuff, though.

Can't forget about computers, either!

I can't see myself selling my copy of Zoom 909 (SG-1000), like, EVER, though.

I'm lovin' it! :D

If circumstances were dire, I'd be able to part with pretty much anything. I'd probably want to keep my better copy of Akumajo Dracula x68K/better copy of Akumajo Densetsu/Contra The Hard Corps (MD/Japanese).

Probably would want to keep some Neo Geo games, the Phantasy Star games, and The Ninja Warriors for Mega CD; I also don't want to get rid of the Resident Evil 4 Special Edition (even if it is super cheaply made).

(Yes, I know I'm replying a second time; I'm just amused that my reply can be so different this time.)

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many Super Punch-Out!! lovers around. A classic indeed. The rest of my list is as follows (with three being the maximum of games per system):
Playstation - Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy VII, and Metal Gear Solid.
Dreamcast - Marvel vs Capcom 2, Soul Calibur, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.
NES - Castlevania III, Ninja Gaiden II, and Super Mario Bros 3.

SNES - Super Street Fighter, Super Mario World, Super Punch-Out!!.

Wow, that was difficult.
