I loved the PC version. I have now seen the board game of this great PC game. Has anyone here seen it open and played it ? Looks very cool on the box, but @ $80 Cdn.... thats a lot.
Just looking for reviews by the good folks at DP!

I'm in the same boat. I have picked it up more times than I can count and then put it back because of the high price tag.
The PC version is one of my all time favorite games. I actually got addicted to it on SNES before buying CivNET. When was the board game released? Has anyone here played it? What's it like?

There's the Boardgamegeek listing for the game...
A couple notes I want to make.
It says it takes 3 hours to play...if you're playing with 6...add a couple hours easy. I haven't played, but I saw a game being played, and it ran a good 5-6 hours.
Average rating is just over a 6, that means it is good, but probably not a great game.
Play weight is a 3.88 - weight is kind of a strange thing, it takes strategy complexity, learning curve, game time, and other factors into account. THis is on a scale to 5, so a score butting up against 4 suggests a very complex board game.
The board is farking HUGE!!!!! almost 4 feet by 3 feet...you need a big table.
Hope that helps :)

I plyed it sometimes at a frieds place. It's really a great boardgame I think. Only downside can be it takes for hours, but hey the videogames also is time-consuming. The game is like the videogame on a lot of points and I think it's one of the better boardgames in the genre.

I've been wanting to pick it up, but I'm afraid i would never have time to actually play it (i have a hard enough time trying to get people to play Pirates of the Spanish Main with me, and that's a super quickie game) :(

I'd try and steer clear of this one. It doesn't feel like the PC game, and the game's mechanics are wonky, if not downright broken. The pieces that come with the game are fairly well made, but some of the units are so similar that it gets confusing trying to tell them apart. My friend has a copy of the game, and I've played it twice. Both games lasted over 5 hours, and we didn't get past the medieval era. I like long games (I'm not a European gamer) but this game simply isn't fun. We just can't get people to play the game again, especially considering the game's length, poor mechanics and the fact that one or two players are almost out of the game immediately due to random placement of the resources.
If you're looking for authentic video->board game releases, I'd recommend these games over Civ:

If you want a good Civilization game, Avalon Hill did a better job back in 1981:
