Sprint for me as well. I must have only been three or four when I played it. I know that I had to have my older brother help me play it!

To the best of my knowledge, Pole Position at the aracade and Rad Racer for the Nes on a home console.

Pole Position on the 2600, later to be followed by one of the racing games that used the driving controllers. I'd assume it was Indy 500 or something like that.

Wow, it's cool to hear that so many of you guys had your first racing experience with Night Driver for the Atari 2600. That was my first too. Or was it Indy 500 for the Atari 2600? I guess whichever one of those was the first to be released. The funny thing about the title, was that they called it Night Driver just to have a freaking black background with white side track markers. GENIUS!, lol.
I'm going to have to pull this game out of the closet and try it again for 5 mins, just to get that nostalgic feeling again.

Rad Racer for the NES. I still love to pull the ol' 3D glasses out and play that game.

Yep, Grand Prix on the 2600 for me, too. Nice graphics, but the races are too short to get into and the cars are too big for the screen. I didn't have them when I was a kid, but I think the best racers on the 2600 are Night Driver and Enduro.
I really think Night Driver is a lot of fun. It controls very well with the paddle and it's fucking frantic as hell. When I play, I tend to imagine that the screen is depicting something more abstract rather than driving a car since the graphics are so minimalist and the gameplay is totally unlike later racing games, but I totally love it. It's a lot like sfCave/Copter and those games which are another favorite gameplay concept of mine.

At the arcade (more specifically, the roller rink): Sprint I from Kee Games (KLOV entry) (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=S&game_id=9738).
At home it was Indy 500. Got it at the same Christmas I got my 1st Atari. It was the only game my little brother ever had a chance of beating me at since I schooled him in every other game we owned

Pole Postion on the 2600.
The first racing game that ever got me into the racing genre though has to go to Super Sprint for the NES. Played the hell out of that game for hours on end.

Pole Position is what comes to mind for the Arcade scene, but for home consoles the first racing game I played was "Dodge Em" on the Atari 2600.

At the arcade ....Sprint I from Kee Games (KLOV entry) (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=S&game_id=9738).
That would be the same for me as well I believe. Easily could've been Super Bug http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9875 or F-1 http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7743
I remember really loving F-1 because it was so "realistic". Well, I sure thought so then. :D
As far as at home it was definitely Street Racer for the 2600.

Sprint... B&W arcade machine. It was awesome back then. Sort of a primitive Super Off-Road for those of you who have never seen one.
I was so small at the time... My father held me up to the wheel and I think he worked the gas pedal for me. The details are so fuzzy. If I hadn't bumped into it in MAME again I might have completely forgotten about it by now.

Ahhh young people. Me, it was Night Driver from the late 1970s! It was nothing but flashing lights streaming down the screen! (PLAYABLE - http://web.utanet.at/nkehrer/JNitedrvr.html )

Pole Position for sure. There was a Dairy Queen near my house growing up that had the original "sit in" arcade unit. As a 3 year old, this thing used to blow my mind! Every time we went there to eat I had to at least sit in that beast. I will never forget the music. Cherished memories.

Pole Position for the arcade.
But I was too young to understand how to play it correctly, so I did terrible and didn't like it.
I think the bad memories have made it hard to enjoy even now. :(
The first I really enjoyed was the original F-Zero.

There was an old Acclaim game on the PC where you race cars around, I think it was a total of 8 tracks around the world. I had it in the early 90s.
Damn, what was the name?

For me it was Indy 500 on Atari 2600. That game was so much fun at the time.
I also remember playing a huge table top racing game with dirt race tracks with my cousin at the arcade. I can't remember the name of it though.

Indy 500 is still a blast. I think I am gonna have to get the hack repro of that game from Atariage. I played a lot of Spin Out on the O2 and Auto Racing on the Intellivision, but I think the first was Nightdriver on the VCS. Much later came Micro Machines on the NES. That game is a blast. To this day, two of my favorite racing games are Indy 500 & Micro Machines.

Most likely something in arcades like Bump n' Jump, but Night Driver on VCS was early on as well. Boy was I glad when Enduro came out on VCS. It beat Night Driver by a huge margin.
I, too, remember winning the trophy on Enduro, and it wasn't that difficult. Been many years ago though, so don't know how well I would fare these days.

Night Driver too for me. On a home console of some sorts, not sure which one is was.
