View Full Version : Making "room" for the Xbox360 (or any console)

With the event horizon of the 360 approaching, what does everyone have to do to get your game rooms ready to "accept" the 360?
My room currently has 10 systems (consoles) wired to a single television and surround sound system. My other classic consoles reside on the other side of the television, but have to each be individually connected before play.
This weekend, my daughter and I will "tear apart" the room to make space for the 360. Some of the not-so-old systems are going to have to be decommissioned. Thus, there's going to be a ton of disconnecting, bundling and reconnecting going on.
What do you have to do to make room for a new console (or any console that is new to your room)? Are all of your consoles connected simultaneously or do you have to connect each to play?

I've got the three current-gen systems and the Dreamcast presently hooked up to my TV.
Whenever I add a new system to the permanent hookups, I bump the least-used off.
I've actually built a set of AV and S-vid jacks into my coffee table. The wires run from there to the reciever, so I can literally plug other, less-used consoles into the jacks on the table and play them that way. It's got a power plug on it too.

That's a hell of an idea!
Think you could upload some pictures of that?

worse than that, i have to make room for xbox 360 in the store i work at. the great thing, we get plan-o-grams to set these things up, but we are one store out of around 1000 stores that does not have the space/setup as the others, so i just have to wing it. it's quite a conundrum when we keep getting sent piles of christmas stock. there isn't room for a damn thing.

I'm moving my old Xbox to another room, and putting the Xbox 360 in its place. Nothing too drastic, but with the move, I'll have at least one game console connected to every TV in my house. No gamers live here! ;)

Yeah i'm feeling the pain too as i have nowhere to put anything. I beleive i'm gonna have to choose between the xbox, ps2 and gc and right now the little cube that could is losing.
I need my xbox for it's media centre capabilites and emulation and i need the PS2 for Shadow and SVR 2006. The little cube doesn't have anything so it looks like it's gonna have to be sacrificed. At least until i can find some way to have them all hooked up because right now they're all huddled on my compute desk and ther just isn't room.

When the Revolution comes along, ol' Gamecube will be retired :(
I am gonna replace all the current get stuff once the next gen stuff is in my house. I shouldnt have a problem with the gamecube and xbox because they are mostly backwards compatible. Its the Ps3 I am worried about. :/

I still have no idea. My current setup is perfect for what I have now, but really doesn't leave any space for ANYTHING else. I probably should've considered that when I set up up. Whoops. When I pick mine up (which, as of right now, is still an unknown date), I'll find a good spot for it.
Here's a related question for all of you - are you gonna set yours up vertically or horizontally? Or...orthagonally? :)

My xbox died a horrible death so I shall have no problem replacing it's component hookup ;D. Today I am probably going to go sell off all my original xbox accessories. No real use for them anymore.
Wow it sounds to me you guys need a media canter. Mine holds 14 systems.
And when I don't get a 360 it will be replacing my Xbox. Wich makes a lot of room. Hell itll pry make enough room for a rev and ps3.

So who is "getting rid" of consoles versus "retiring" them, like to another room? Nothing of mine is leaving forever, but it will just take a little more effort to play now. It's going to greatly simplify my video/audio situation. However, I'm going to have to split my splitter for fiber optic audio. The XBox and PS2 both alread use fiber optic and since my surround sound (Kenwood) only has one fiber optic input, I'm using a splitter now. And unless I want something that employs a manual switch, I'm going to split one of the branches on it. Since it's out of reach, manually switching is out of the question. Any multi-input fiber optic device suggestions would be appreicated. @_@
Which brings up another logical question: Who's decommissioning the Xbox for the Xbox360? I'm keeping my Xbox "in the loop". Backwards compatibility is a must for new consoles, but I stll prefer to play games on their primary console. If the XB360 lives up to the backwards enhancements that it touts, that may change, but for now I'm leaving it "in".

I will be putting the 360 in the frontroom, moving my black Xbox to my gameroom, and will be taking my Halo Xbox from my Gameroom setup back in its box. If I ever get a house, I want to be able to hook up 4 Xbox system and have some crazy multiplayer!

You're going to bend your xbox 90 degrees to itself?

Aww, shucks. It doesn't take up that much space, either!

The least used goes back in the closet.same here. just pull it out when you want to play it, then stick it back in the closet when you're done
My wife and I are in the process of building a new gaming room. Painting starts today. I bought new furniture for it this week, which included a new entertainment center that was carefully chosen for it's rows of console-sized shelves on each side of the TV space. You can easily fit 2 Dreamcasts side by side on a single shelf with room to spare, or an Xbox and a Cube. I'll be able to have all of my systems out. It's fun to go to a furniture store and consider pieces of furniture based on their "gameability".
I also treated myself to a plasma TV, which gets picked up later after the room is complete. I'm dying to see what a Dreamcast looks like on plasma. Hell.....I'm dying to see what a NES looks like!! LOL

Im not getting one, so I don't have to worry.
Though I suppose that if I ever do get one, since it supports VGA, it'll most likely get hooked up to my computer monitor.

i was going to move my clear xbox back into my bedroom once i picked up the 360 but now learning about the fact that its not even close to completely backwards compatible i don't know what i'm going to do....i've run out of spots on my switcherbox, im guessing Gamecube will just get temporarilly unhitched, oh-well i'll figure it out when i get home with the new baby : ]
