According to Next Gen an MS rep said there would some annoucement today Nov. 11th about the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility.

Hopefully it'll be a list of compatibile title's but right now anythings possible.

MS hasn't released anything yet, at least nothing that's been reported but with any luck we should be hearing something soon.

Part of the report was that Halo 1 and 2 would both be playable, and in 720p instead of the formerly 480p limit. I'm sure that'll elicit several hard-ons around here.

Speaking of the halo comparision, here's the comparision picture.

I don't think Halo was made for 1080

Big Picture Goes 'ere

Er, is that really a fair comparison? The 480 one is twice as zoomed as t'other one, right? Or does that make no difference? And good lord this whole 480 business confuses me, can someone explain? :embarrassed:

Yup. The 480p picture must be zoomed in to twice the size of the 720p image just to get the same proportions to account for the larger resolution of a 720p image.

If you zoomed in the 720p image to the same level that the 480p image has been, the pixels would be the same size. That's really not a good comparison because then you'd only be able to show a quarter of the image which is shown in the same *real* space (on an HDTV) as the 480p image would be :)

I don't get it. They show "comparison shots" of a high-def image that would make you puke, but I can hook my Genny up through an RF switch and it looks great.

Something smells fishy.

The only thing that stinks here is your lack of ability to read the article.

If you had bothered to read, you would notice that the 360 does not output the same way the Xbox does, and Bungie does not yet have the tools necessary to compare 720p images to original Xbox stills with direct feed. The HD image (which looks about 8 billion times better than the original Xbox image) is a still captured from video taken from the console. Kind of like a copy of a copy.

And I really can't understand how you can think those HD shots looks crappy. FSAA on old Xbox games is about the greatest thing they could have done for backwards compatability, percentage of the library be damned.

So how does this backward compatibility work? I keep hearing the word emulation used but I was always under the impression that it took a ton of CPU power to emulate a moderately modern console. I can't imagine that the 360 is THAT much more powerful than the Xbox that it can emulate it accurately through software.

3 cores running at 3.2 ghz that's the equivalent of 3 3.2 ghz hyper thread processors running in parellel. That's more then enough power to emulate the original Xbox in software.

THAT'S IT?

O_O

No NFL Madden 2006 or NCAA Football 2006? No Dead or Alive XBV? No Sheume II? No Panzer Dragoon Orta? No Metal Gear Solid II?

There's almost nothing in my current library of games for the XBox that WOULD play on the 360!

Damn, that means I'd have to keep my XBox around and plugged in and find room for it. I was hoping to be able to 'upgrade' and sell the old system like I do with the PS3 and the Rev. This bites. :/

I'd imagine that anyone with a 360 dev kit can work on it. If Microsoft has any brains at all, they'd give serious attention to this area. That's a pretty sad backwards-compatibility list at launch. Time will tell if things will substantially improve. In a year or two it won't matter as much, but this has gotta hurt for some people who were planning on just using the 360 for all their games, as well as those who never had an Xbox to begin with, but might be interested in Xbox titles for their shiny new 360. Bleh.

That's 213 compatible games. On Xbox.com, they list 769 titles under "Catalog." If accurate, that's about 27.7% of the Xbox catalog that is compatible with the Xbox 360. Frankly, this number is pathetic for a system that touts "backward compatibility" with a previous system's library.

It's not an absolute list. They will constantly be adding emulators for download over the coming months, so the number should (hopefully) jump to well over what it's at now.

But more important to this issue, can the original Xbox communicate with the 360 in that you can transfer files from the old to the new? I'm certainly not restarting saves in any of these games.

None of the Splinter Cells?! Army Men, Barbie's Horse Adventures, and BMX XXX among other floods of shitty games, but no Rayman 3 or Beyond Good & Evil?! No (well, okay, a few) Sega games? Shenmue II...where art thou.

Actually, I don't give a shit. To tell the truth, I hate backwards compatibility unless it significantly boosts graphical quality, shortens load times, and the successor console's controller is considerably more comfortable than its predecessor. The PS2 came along, for example, and rendered my PS1 useless. The PS2 didn't have a better controller, or better graphical quality for PS2 games...yet there was no reason not to play PS1 games on it.

I guess the main reason I hate backwards compatibility is because as a video game collector, I try to own every system, but it seems entirely stupid to own a PS1 when I own a PS2. Yet I do. I'm addicted to collecting.

I'm glad to see I'll still need my Xbox for games though, instead of it becoming a PS1 situation and just sitting there connected to one of my many switcher boxes and surge protectors but being unused. To tell the truth, even if the 360 was 100% backwards compatible, my modded Xbox would still get lots of use - Xbox Media Center's capabilities kick the shit out of the 360's media capabilities.

Unlike most of you, I'm stunned it can play that many Xbox1 games. LOL

When I read about the emu backwards compatibility, I *knew* it would be a hit and miss list (mostly miss), and indeed it is exactly that.

There about 4 titles I own in that list. LOL

I'm sure it will grow. Hurry up and wait, those of you who expected backwards compatibility to be *real*.

What is most amusing to me is that most people I speak to (OSG customers) seem to 'expect' full backwards compatibility now, like it's some sort of established standard. I'd hardly call these consoles:

Atari 7800
PS2
(GameBoy is not a console)

an established standard upon which to expect the way consoles have been for 30 years to suddenly change. ;)

If you have Xbox games that you really like, keep that Xbox. :)

Oh yeah, 720p, but damnit, wheres my 1080? I want to play the way my TV needs to damnit!

I have a Sony 51 inch HDTV, that takes native 720p signals and downconverts them to 480p! Can you believe that? Luckily, the XBOX 360 has it's own internal scaler, and it can convert 720p to 1080i internally before sending the signal to your TV. So if you have a TV that will display 1080i but not 720p, you're in luck.

That's what everyone kept saying. I'm sure Mircosoft can come up with a better method to fix this. Plus like you said, there could be a patch update to correct this.

I'm just really ticked off right now. Typical of Mircosoft to do this kind of thing from time to time.

So we'll just wait and see. I'm just blowing off some stupid steam because I just don't like the direction it's heading. Sure I like the 360, yet what really makes me worried is do you know how many customers I am gonna have to tell this too? after we have promised them so much? Since I work for GameCrazy afterall.

Only 11 days left, will they know the feedback from the public on this issue? Probably. Only time will tell however

You know what's a trip?

During the time I had a PS2, I probably played a PS1 game on there maybe twice. If that. Whenever I wanted to play a Playstation game, I would always play it on a regular Playstation.

But I was actually looking forward to the backward compatibility of the 360. I was hoping that we would be able to play some of the big new releases. Actually, the more interesting issue, is not which games will work, but of the games that do work, how good do they work? Will it be a seamless experience? Will you know that your playing your games on a software based emulator? Or will it be smooth, and you won't even realize that your playing it off a emulator?

It's definitely going to be an interesting thing to watch. The cool thing is, that some games can actually be improved. Playing the original Halo in 16:9 and 720p is going to be pretty damn fun. Anybody got a copy of Halo 1 for super cheap?

At the end of the day, I really could give a rat's ass about BC. The only BC that I give a crap about, is that old XBOX game BC, that got delayed indefinitely. Hopefully that game will end up on the 360. But Backwards Compatibility was never a huge issue with me. I'm buying a 360 to play 360 games. I sold everything XBOX, and right now I'm looking for a used copy of Halo 1, because I want to play it in 16:9 and 720p. But that's about it. I'm going to be too wrapped up in a large number of 360 games to even really care about BC.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how the XBOX 1 games are going to run on the 360, though. I'll be curious about it.

and the interview:

Xbox.com: So what are the 200+ games that are backward compatible as of today?

Todd Holmdahl: It's simple: You can log onto Xbox.com/games for an up-to-date list of original Xbox games that run on Xbox 360. There are more than 200 titles as of today, and we will update you on a regular basis after launch.

Ghouls & Ghosts - Hey, you work at GameCrazy, how many 360's are you guys getting it?

Reason I ask, is because I have a 360 reserved at two different GameCrazy locations. At one of them, I'm the very first person on the list, and I've paid completely in full. So I don't think there is any chance that I won't get that one. Some dude said his GameCrazy is only getting 4 of them, which is pretty ridiculous, but I consider that an absolute worst case scenario, and even then, I would still get mine considering I'm first.

But the other GameCrazy that I have one on hold at, I'm like the 21st person. I guess I'm going to have to check in with them next week and see if they heard anything.

Surprise! Well to me at least, I really was expecting the list to include Halo, Halo 2, Fable and nothing else.

I think if anyone has any questions they should read the Q&A:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilityqa.htm

If anyone's wondering why there are so many bad games on the list its fully explained that games that while working on the "top" games they found that other games that used similar technology also worked. I think of it like this. They worked to get San Andreas working and then GTAIII and Vice City for the most part were compatible since they all use the Renderware engine.

As for why there's certain games missing, well that's quite simple. They want you to buy the 360 version. Burnout Revenge? Madden? And many others.

For me this list is great news. All those Xbox games that I never got to play (never owned nor wanted a Xbox) I now might be able to try. And at the very least there will be plenty of lower priced games that I can play, instead of the $50/60 360 games that I simply can't afford.

Hmm, Oddworld: Stranger isn't listed. Actually, neither is the first XBox Oddworld, or Microsoft's own Phantom Dust.

Well, guess this is better than nothing...and the games will be running in higher resolution, to boot.

So yeah, I'd rather they get the console out now and keep working on getting games to run. Glad to see Airforce Delta Storm on that list :)

Well still though it's a pretty bad list of compatibility

but it is more games than I thought they would support

it just proves to me that the 360 is not worth it and will not be worth it anytime soon.

Every company has to send microsoft the code for there games. There is a chance that sega never sent the code or sent it way to late in the game. So before you say "thats a big fuck you to sega" realize it could be segas fault.

here is some more info :
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilityqa.htm

i like this one a lot :

Xbox.com: Will there be any benefits to playing original Xbox games on my Xbox 360 console?

Todd: Absolutely. One of the great things about gaming on Xbox 360 is the satisfaction of knowing that every game will be playable in high definition. We are now proud to reveal that this extends to the original Xbox games as well. Every original Xbox game will be upscaled to 720p and 1080i, and will take advantage of Xbox 360’s anti-aliasing capabilities, delivering a picture that is clearer and crisper than anything available on Xbox.

and another great feature :

Xbox.com: Can you play games cross-platform? Specifically, can I play Halo 2 on Xbox 360 with my friend who plays it on Xbox?

Todd: Yes. You can play backward compatible original Xbox games cross-platform from Xbox 360 to Xbox. Personally, I can't wait to see the first Xbox vs. Xbox 360 Halo 2 clan matches pop up on Xbox Live.

It's a sad day when we get a BC list before an official list of launch day titles.

First to answer the save question: There is no way of transferring your save to the 360 which means that you have to start over if you want to play your Xbox games on your 360. That in itself is a big "F you". As for the games, I too am very very dissapointed that games like Battlefront I, or II are not on the list at first. Again, I understand that not only will the list be updated, but that it depends on the 3rd parties sending in their code. I UNDERSTAND, BUT THE AVERAGE CUSTOMER WONT. I have heard so much misinformation in the last two weeks being told to customers, that it is crazy.

Yeah, this really sucks. There is absolutely no way in hell I'm going go thru and beat Metal Slug 3 again. The first time was hard enough.

FTW.

More than I expected, but I hope they make Psychonauts compatible! That's the only xbox game I will care to ever play again that's not on that list.

You know that's not a bad list for starts. I doubt it will help any DP members as we're bound to have several games that aren't on the list, but it may help out more casual players...

Cheers,

The way I see it, the cup is half full, not half empy.

I was honestly only expecting about 20 or so titles to be backwards compatible by launch. By my count, 19 of my Xbox games will play on the 360, and that's not a bad start. Yes, I do wish Panzer Dragoon, Unreal Championship 2, MechAssault and other games would play on it, but give it time. I believe they will add to the list of compatible games after launch. I don't know what some of you are expecting. Be happy they got this many games compatible by launch. A true "fuck you" would be a list of 15 games and that's all. They are trying, nobody can deny that. The fact that you can play Live enabled Xbox games on the 360 against Xbox users is reassuring.

No one bitched when the Snes didn't play NES games, or when the Dreamcast didnt' play Saturn games. Backwards compatibility is something of a luxury in my eyes. Just because the PS2 has it does not make it an industry standard.

I'm happy with the 360 compatibility list for the time being as long as they keep their promise of adding more games to the list.

Here's to hoping this list will grow, as some people would like to conserve space by having the 360 as opposed to the original (one of those people would be me). As of now, only 3 games I own are in that list (Darkwatch, NGBlack, Fable). Many mainstream titles appear to be currently ignored, so it's not just us that are going to be pissed off come launch day.

I suppose this will be one advantage of having to wait for the console
to launch here in Aus, the list should grow to hopefully incorperate Street fighter Anniversary collection! 8-)

I wonder if this list is small due to Region differences in certain game code? Having the console releasing worldwide might mean they where only able to get certain games to work across all regions.?
