I've got a (apparently roughly) used GBA SP with a screen light that only wants to work sometimes. The screen itself looks fine (it's not obviously broken in any way, and it looks just fine without the light), but the light only comes on when the screen is tilted all the way back. Also, there appears to be some sort of ding in the screen cover, and when the light is on it appears darker in that spot.

I'm hoping (and I rather suspect) that the dark spot is not actually a screen problem, as the screen does look fine when the light isn't on.

Anyone have any ideas?

I would agree that it does not sound like a screen problem. There is a button to turn the light on, but Im sure you know that. Otherwise I dont know what to say. I know the screen is not really "back" lit (unlesss you have a new one, but that's a separate story), so I wouldnt image that hitting the screen or anything would cause damage to the light. I am not even sure if the light is an LED or many, although if I had to guess I'd say it was.

Id reccomend taking it apart to see what the problem could be, but SPs are small and fragile looking, so Id be careful.
