View Full Version : Do you still hear people call everything "Nintendo"
During my school's anual fall festavil I set up my Dreamcast, Gamecube and PS2. Many of the parents would come up and tell their kids if they wanted to play "Nintendo" and point to the Dreamcast.

Yeah, I know what you mean. My parents still come into my room and say "look how many Nintendo games you have."
Granted, I have about 1000 games for Nintendo consoles, but they just see them all as 'Nintendo'

I missed the advent of "Nintendo" as a universal term for all games. Back in my day the games were all referred to by parental types as "Atari tapes" whether they were Atari, Intellivision, Coleco and so forth.
Oh, lest I forget, back then the Atari tapes only cost a nickel each ;) .
Actually this sort of thing makes me cringe and one sees many examples of it in life, e.g. - people who refer to all soft drinks as "Cokes", or little kids who think the lions at the zoo are called "Simbas". It just goes to show you how much effort some corporations will put into altering your perceptions through advertising and marketing in order for you to look at the world their way. Scary, yes?

My friends' brother constantly calls his PS2 a Nintendo...when he never even had ANY Nintendo systems! (Mind you he's 17, so he wasn't there for most Nintendo systems). Another thing that he, and a few others, say that irks me is calling a controller a remote control. How can it be a remote when its connected, dammit??!!!

Once I was playing on my old cellphone, Nokia 3310, and a guy came buy and said: So your sitting on your ass and play Nintendo. Haha, was funny that he said it like that LOL Personally I dont care if someone call everything Nintendo as long as its being understood what they are talking about.

I don't know what you're talking about. Why just the other day I had some Coke (lemonade), while watching cartoons (perfect blue), after that I read a comic book (graphic novel), and then I finished off the day playing some Nintendo (SMS).
Though I can understand how a parent would confuse a DC and an NES, they are quite similar in design.

It seems to become standard to call games XBOX. You hear it on TV all the time and when I used to work for a video game store moms always called ALL game XBOX.
I hate when people call the PS2 the "P2"...dumbasses.

Oh ya, let's see I've heard this many times by parents
"What's that one thing *twiddles her thumbs to show a motion that some game thingie is portable* that Nintendo makes that's portable?"
Answer- "A gameboy?"
"No no! that thing that plays movies!"
Anwser 2- "The PSP?"
"No, I don't think that's it...I think it's Video Now or something..."
Answer 3- "Then you need to go to Toys R Us ma'am..."
What a waste of time...
--------------------------------------------------
"Nintendo? Damn they still make those?" is what one moron said, after he claims "All I have is a PS2"
--------------------------------------------------
Here's the funniest to me, I'm holding an Atari 2600 Jr in my hands and my cousin's new husband said to me "Playing Nintendo?" and I said "No, but you're nearly 40 years old and you don't even reconize what an ATARI is?" Man now I feel OLD and I'm only 25!
-----------------------------------------------
"There's nothing good on Nintendo! Why can't it have stuff like PS2 and Xbox!!"
Oh lord, if they only knew about what we do around here at DP, yet those average consumers don't have the honor to visit a place such as this.
------------------------------------------------------
"Nintendo makes GameBoy? Wow I didn't know that!"
Phew, the cries and wow's of a soccer mom....simply priceless
-----------------------------------------------------
"Well I was playing that one Nintendo system the other day..and"
That one Nintendo system? Gee, that sloves all the world's problems right there buddy-boy...
----------------------------------------------
"I have a Super Nintendo still :)"
Gee Ralphie, do you want a cookie for that? because most of us can find one for $1-5 a pop at the local flea markets while your dumbass probably bought it on Ebay for $45 with two god awful sports titles....from ME or one my good buddies online! LOL Ah the perks of being online...god bless it..

I have a friend who went into a Gamestop around six months ago and there were three employees in there, and some customer walks in and asks what the processing power of the DC is and (128 bit of course) but none of them knew and he answered for the customer. If you don't know the simple things like that then you don't belong working there.
I'm almost 24 now, but when I was in 8th grade I was buying any NES game I could get my hands on, and one friend of mine in school said isn't Nintendo a little immature for our age, another guy responded and said he played PSX and Genesis, the first guy agreed that that was cool but thought we were too old to play NES at that age. That is a pretty shallow mindset.

Anwser 2- "The PSP?"
"No, I don't think that's it...I think it's Video Now or something..."
Answer 3- "Then you need to go to Toys R Us ma'am..."
What a waste of time...
AND money...the increasing sums of Video Nows I sell to ignorant parents. And I TELL them, just buy an SP, 10 times the variety (and they're finally coming out with full-length feature film GBA Videos, not just collections of TV shows Cartoon Network reruns 20 times a week!) But they still buy the Video Now. Why? *shrugs* stupidity, cheapness, "well, he/she specifically asked for Video Now" etc etc
"Nintendo makes GameBoy? Wow I didn't know that!"
I get that all the time too. That and "Do you have any SP games?" Yeah, first aisle "Oh, do Advance games work in SP?"
9 out of 10 customers will call controllers paddles. PADDLES? Who started calling controllers paddles and when? If I find them I want to smack them because that is the dumbest thing you can call a controller. And I'd expect it from older adults, but people in their mid 20s-mid 30s are calling them that too! My parents are 40 and don't even call them paddles.
Another funny thing is, since the Atari name has belonged to Infogrames for the past coupla years and they've been releasing games under the Atari logo, people see the Atari logo and go "Wow! They still make games for the Atari?!" It seems commen sense eludes people the second they walk into a retail store.
Now I understand people, particularly parents and grandparents, not being into video games and not knowing a lot, but there are some things that have just been in the media and pop culture for so long that you had to have been under a rock for the past 20 years to not know that. Like the barrage of questions I get, "Do you have Mario for PS2?" Some games I understand them not realizing the console exclusivity, but Mario has been a Nintendo-owned and exclusive entity for over 20 years, you'd think people would've noticed by now that he hasn't appeared on anything other than a Nintendo console (except that Hotel Mario for CD-i, but if these people can't grasp the fact that Mario will NEVER be out for PS2 then they won't be able to grasp the concept of an obscure 90s console that stemmed from a broken contract between Phillips and Nintendo) I'm just saying that even if you could care less about what goes on in the video game industry, you're still bound to hear things and Mario's been name dropped more than any other video game character in the past 20 years. You'd also think that these parents would actually pay attention to their children for once and would actually pick something up out of it.
I sometimes wonder if I should stop mentioning the fact that the GBA SP plays original GameBoy and GameBoy Color games, because it goes over many of my customers' heads.
My parents always called NES carts "tapes" and I remember even being 8 getting annoyed by that. I would be like, "They're CARTRIDGES NOT TAPES!!!" Because even at that tender age, I could tell the difference between a cartridge and a tape. To me a tape was and always will be an audio or video cassette.
Also, if I'm ever referring to older systems to my customers, especially when raving about the fact that you can download NES, SNES and N64 games on the Revolution, I need to be wary cuz some, even if they remember the systems well, probably don't know the abbreviations or never used them so aren't used to them so I always say Nintendo or Original Nintendo instead of NES and Super Nintendo instead of SNES in front of people just in case.

"Nintendo Tapes". What part of it remotely resembles a "tape"?
They likely think it's like an 8-Track - the tape's hidden inside. If you owned an early 80s computer - games did come on tapes.

Many people call the PSP the "Playstation Game Boy".
Stuff like this used to make me cringe too. I definitely think that the worst was people calling controllers "paddles". That one used to make me grit my teeth and clench my fists. LOL
What used to make me LAUGH was when parents used to ask for the new "Tommy Hawk" game. If their "too cool for mom and dad" kid was with them, you could see him visibly shrink. Priceless.

Oh, yeah, the SP plays it all (except Kirby's Tilt n Tumble for GBC because the fact that the SP bottom loads screws it up. I bought a $10 GBC for that game alone. Everything else I play on my SP)
However, the new Micro cannot play GB and GBC. Which is sad, what is the point of a new GameBoy not being backwards compatible???

On to the topic. **Dons wizard cap of geekiness +5** There, that's better... now where was I... oh yes, now I remember. Through most of the 80's everything was Atari. Since the late 80's, to a lesser extent now however, it was all Nintendo. Mostly these days all I hear the uninitiated refer to our beloved games is either Playstation (home console) or Gameboy (handhelds). I have no clue how this becomes part of the lexicon of daily speech and I think my mind is sounder that I don't. I assume it makes it easier to convey your meaning, if you don't know what it is exactly, to give it a label you hear on TV or in polite conversation. You could attempt to correct them... lay some knowledge on them as it were. But I have found that this simply does not work. People are going to call tissues Kleenex... lip balm Chap Stik... and soft drinks Cokes. And you know what?.... there isn't a gd thing you can do about it. Save go home, crawl into bed and weep for the future of humanity. So in the meantime... who's up for some Nintendo O_O

People are just ill-informed. It may irk us as gamers, but at the same time those people probably get annoyed when we mess up the terms used in their hobbies.
Two quick things: I shudder everytime I hear "GameBoy DS". It's not a GameBoy.
Second thing - I work with a woman (who is also a consultant for the DoD) who tried to tell me that the PSP not only played games and movies, it also "works as a cell phone and PDA". I tried to set her straight, but it was obvious that she heard this from someone more important than me so anything I say must be wrong.

When I'm at the fleamarket, I sometimes ask people if they've got any "old Nintendo tapes." In my experience, that will usually get them to show you whatever cartridge games they've got. I also believe I'm more likely to get a better price that way if I don't make it sound like they've got something really rare. If they're more knowledgable and get specific on me, I just ask if they have any other old video games.
I really couldn't give a crap about what most people call video games, though, as long as I can understand what they mean well enough to interact with those people and in some cases buy games from them.
The calling all sodas "Cokes" thing kind of threw me once, though. I took a job in Georgia and people laughed at me for asking where I could get a soda.
