Lots of wonderful, "Golden Age" software for it.
You can go here & get 'em > "Macintosh Garden" (http://mac.the-underdogs.org/index.php?show=all) [Loads A Tad Slow .... lol]
In classic Macintosh computer lore, there's Robert Carr.
Here's a cool interview with 'im > Robert Carr Interview (http://www.postfun.com/pfp/news/iviews/carr.html)
He started a "Subversive Classic Macintosh Computer Software" company called "Lamprey Systems".
Each piece of software fits nice 'n snugly on a 1.44MB floppy disc -- and it's FREE!
Have a look! > "Lamprey Systems" Software (http://www.lamprey-systems.com/software.shtml)
Ever heard of "bOING bOING"?
They're the world's greatest neurozine!
See for yourself > "bOING bOING" (http://boingboing.net)
I mention this 'cause the creator of it made a cyberpunk comicstrip.
Then a "bOING bOING" fan was inspired and made a cool Macintosh game based on the characters in the strip.

Dark Castle (Seen it played, never really played it.)
Breech (the first one. hard to find the Mac version)
Lotus Jukebox (i've got a mac archive of this, need too set up basilisk or something to play it)
Thanks for the link to Mac Dark Castle.

DARK CASTLE!!! I was forever trying to figure out the name of that game! I knew it was 'something castle'...
Thanks Sanriostar!
God, this thread takes me back.. I remember my friend introducing me to '..some Russian puzzle game I found on a BBS.', on his Mac - Of course, you all know I'm talkin' 'bout Tetris...
This was when it was still virtually unknown in the United States.. Who knew it would become one of the greatest games ever known to man?

I'm rather fond of TaskMaker (and its sequel, Tomb of the TaskMaker). And of course we can't forget Cliff Johnson (http://www.fools-errand.com) and his legendary games, like 3 in Three and The Fool's Errand.
Oh, and Rescue! (now freeware) is probably one of the best Star Trek games of its kind ever.

Ahh, the SE/30, very well known...I myself have a (dead-battery, which I could replace if only I could open the case with my too-thick, too-short security bit tools...) Mac Classic with 16 MB (not 12, or whatever they say the maximum is!), don't have any games for it, strangely. My mac games are limited to a whole crateful of Apple II games which I can't play (sealed, and don't have an Apple // besides) and a few post-'92 releases.
While we're at it, there's a game I played shareware years ago - not Dark Castle from what I can tell, but it definitely was grayscale B&W and I recall had pretty well defined, tall player character graphics and a realistic dungeon atmosphere (well, realistic in terms of proportions). All I recall is a room with a swinging blade (you know, the type in a horror movie) that you had to get over somehow, and all the hillarity of fellow students failing to get over it right.

I'm big on getting
Phrase Craze
and
Crystal Quest
up and running on a classic Mac.
So, for backward compatibility and convenience, what's the best machine to look out for? I want something that will easily run first and second gen software and that has a built in monitor, old school style.
Ed Oscuro

I'm assuming that most pre-OS 8 Macs will run most of this software, right? Probably would be fine as long as you watch out for the Road Apples, but many of those don't have built-in monitors.
Well, for my part...if you ever see a Mac TV in the wild, definitely pick that up LOL The SE/30 always has gotten high marks, and I do believe the Mac Classic II was a great machine for the time :)
Also, I think that the answer posted was right, CaryMG :)
Like I wrote there, the last time I saw the game was when computer magazines were carrying print ads for Riven :P Been a long time, and the game looks fantastic.

Whoa, Phrase Craze. I remember the MS-DOS version of that one.
You may enjoy http://www.lowendmac.com , particularly the Best Buys (http://www.lowendmac.com/best/index.shtml) and Road Apples (http://www.lowendmac.com/roadapples/index.shtml) sections. Lots of fun reading!
I personally still have four Macs lying around in here that I got for free: a Quadra 610, two Power Mac 6100s, and a Performa 5260CD. I'm hoping to get this 9.1 GB SCA (SCSI-3) drive working in one of the 6100s, but working with SCSI is a nightmare.
The quickest (but not necessarily best) way to get Mac software running on your PC is to get Executor from http://www.ardi.com (the company is sadly in its death throes). It should have decent compatibility with older stuff.

My mom's first Mac for her work was an SE/30 running System 6. She's a desktop publisher, so she needed a professional machine back then.
Anyway, I wasn't really allowed to use it very often, as she used it for her work, but my parents did get me Arthur (a graphic text game by Infocom, unplayable if you don't have the manual, and still not dumped on the web to this day) and, after System 7 came out, SimEarth, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and When in Time is Carmen Sandiego. I can say that I was still able to run SimEarth (albeit at a dizzying speed) directly on my old iMac G3 350MHz running OS9 (I don't remember how I managed to load it on the iMac -- probably after dumping the diskette on a zip cartridge, as I never owned an external diskette drive for the iMac)...

"Macintosh SE/30" Computer (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_classic/stats/mac_se30.html)
The only difference is the "Macintosh SE/30" computer has a harddrive built-in so ya don't hafta use floppies.

The "Golden Age" of home gaming began with the 16-bit era.
And what was the world's first 16-bit computer?
The "Macintosh" (http://mac.the-underdogs.org/index.php?show=all) !
So it's good ta see that there're other people as enthusiastic about Macintosh computer gaming as I am.
I wish there was a site similar to "MobyGames" that features Macintosh computer games.
"MobyGames" doesn't cover 'em & "Macintosh Garden" (http://mac.the-underdogs.org/) only has the games for downloading.

I was thinkin' of making a really cool website based on all-in-one 68000 Macintosh computers.
The one that's already out there is unattractive, difficult to navigate, incomplete, not at all interactive & severely lacking in downloadable materials.
I even thought of a cool name & checked ta see if that URL was available & it is!
Do you guys think that that'd be a worthwhile endeavor?
Ya think enough people'd be interested in that that it'd be worthwhile learning how to make a website & do it?
Thanks In Advance!

oh man...
there was this game I used to play, and I think it was called Captain Something, but it's not Captain Blood. The main thing I remember was that it used the voice synthesizer, and people would talk to you - only after you found a "tricorder." If you didn't have the tricorder, there would be thought bubbles above their heads like this ")*(&^*&%^%&^^&$%$^"
Cary? Anyone?
The other distinguishing characteristic is that before you walked up to people, they sat ambiguously on the map. Once you reached them, they either wanted to be your friend or would attack you.

Which came out first, Macintosh or Vectrex?
How about a Vectrex emulator for classic Macs? Then a custom black paint job and an emblem, 'Mactrex'.
I just realized the family resemblence of the Mac and Vec.

You're right! I never thought of it before, but the Vectrex looks like a Dark Twin of the Macintosh.
I think the Vectrex came first, but I only think that because of that Macintosh-big-brother-1984-during the-Superbowl-commercial and I'm pretty sure the Vectrex came out in 1982.
