View Full Version : Anyone know about modded xbox systems?

I am thinking about getting a modded xbox system. I have no idea where to start though, or what to pay, or even what is the mod to get.

Basically I want to mod a xbox just for playing roms. I don't care about burning xbox games onto my system, or copying cdr's. I just want the most disk space possible to load roms on the system. So what would be a good mod to get? What is the most amount of memory I can get? And what is a good price to pay for the hard drive and the mod chip?

I also have some other questions. What kinds of games are compatable with the xbox? I have heard I can play nes, snes, genesis, and MAME. What about turbo grafx, neo geo, sega master system, and the other systems?

And do the roms have any problems playing on the xbox? I have a few cd's for dreamcast. One plays nes games flawlessly on the Dreamcast. However Genesis games have slightly distorted sound, and snes games ran really slow on the dreamcast. Will I have these problems on the xbox?

What about some of the sega st-v and newer neo geo games on mame? Like cotton and mark of the wolves. Do they play really slow on the xbox?

Just so everyone knows, I am not some sort of rom junkie. I spend lots of money on games. I just think having a modded xbox would make some room in my house. Then I could unhook most of my systems. I am kinda running out of space and need to store some of my games away until I get a house of my own.

pretty much everything you'd ever need to know about modded xboxes.

As for mame - roms are pretty iffy. I have one with the base 64mb ram, if I could do it over again, I'd do the 128mb upgrade as this greatly allows you to play some of the newer games, or some of the larger old ones (I'm looking at you, Marvel capcom series).

Garou plays perfect on mine, although takes about 90 seconds to load, but is otherwise fine.

ST-V games don't actually have good emulation at all on PC or on xbox, so Cotton's going to disappoint I'm afraid.

Still, makes a great emu box so you don't have to have all those systems hooked up. Considering my current apartment's size, it's something I'm thankful for as well.

I've got some friends with various modded Xboxes ... one thing to be very careful with, is that a lot of mods 'break' the ability for the Live service to work. There are ways around it, but yeah, the best solution is to talk to someone who's already done what you want to do, and find out how to get it done.

Well they don't really break your ability to use live so much as live will ban your box if it detects certain anamolies. There's a faq about it somewhere on xbox-scene.

Yeah that's basically what I was trying to get across. The idea is to be damned careful and find out beforehand if Live is an important feature for you .. to some people it's crucial, and others couldn't care less.
