"Who do you want to execute today?"

Is it wrong that I actually kinda liked that?

I find it pretty ironic he's pushing Doom as a great game for Windows 95, considering it was programmed in DOS, as was Doom 2. LOL

I thought that was pretty funny as well :)

Pretty nice video... I liked it a good bit more than the Balmer/Gates Matrix spoof they did a few years back (2003?)

Ah, the good old days when videogame violence was something to be celebrated and enjoyed. You'd never see them make something like that now.

Doom was one of the first games ported over to Windows using what was then dubbed the "WinG" API. It was a true Windows 32 bit application. This version was never publicly released, but was leaked. After WinG was augmented and merged into the new DirectX API, it was fully ported and named "Doom for Windows 95". This is the version still packaged with the retail versions of Doom today.

Doom was a big deal for Windows 95 since it was able to run in high res (640x400) at a decent framerate with accurate sound effects and showcased the new marketing of Win95 as a gaming platform.

DOS is by Microsoft, actually. Hence, the (now archaic) terms "MS DOS" and "MS DOS Prompt."

You said it!

My first reaction to that video was, "man, Bill Gates SUCKS at DOOM! I would destroy him in a deathmatch, considering how he primitive his tactical approach to DOOM is." With all due respect (as a gamer, not as a businessman), he controls DOOM like a novice.

I very seriously doubt that was even him playing, its just a video ad, a really really nerdy video ad.

He sort of has; he made a cameo appearance on an episode of Frasier.

I wish all videogame ads were that nerdy. I think it's cool that the owner of a multi gajillion dollar company was willing to have a little fun.

Alright, small rant here but who the heck made this into a WMV3 file forcing me to only be able to watch it in the piece of shit Mac Windows Media Player? What's wrong with older WMV formats? At least THOSE played in VLC and MPlayerX! God dammit I hate video codecs. VLC can't play WMV3!

NO MORE WMV3 FORMAT!

Rant over.

That is so funny. OMG, I would have never guessed. This is as bad as that Pepsi commercial he was in back then.

I say the same thing about the recent versions of Quicktime. ^_^ . (No matter how obnoxious Mac Windows Media Player is, it can't be as bad as Quicktime for Windows.)

I was under the mistaken impression that Quicktime Player would be somehow better on the Mac until I actually bought a Mac. It's amazing that it's every bit as bad as it is on PC.

Also, why the unholy hell would anyone be against using a better codec? Complaining about WMV9 and recommending people stick with older, archaic forms of the codec is the exact opposite of what we need to happen. That's equivellent to demanding that everyone should use H.263 instead of H.264 just because you feel inconvienced that your program of choice doesn't support the newer format.

Don't get me wrong, I understand where you're coming from, but your hate seems a little misguided. Instead of complaining about having to use "the piece of shit Mac Windows Media Player" and that people should stick with older formats, why don't you complain about how MPlayerOSX and VLC don't properly support WMV9 on the Mac?

On a tangent, Windows Media Player on MacOS is still better than Quicktime Player on MacOS. While Windows Media Player doesn't support MOV files (oh no!), it does support going fullscreen and you don't have to shell out $$ for it to do so.

On another tangent, I find it funny that if a MacOSX application is half as useful as a freeware PC counterpart then you're going to be expected to pay for it. Cross compiling unix applications that use the X11 Windows System doesn't even begin to count as a native Mac application, either. Nothing like taking the beautiful MacOSX interface and user experience and then pissing all over it!

They're all just computers, who gives a crap, watch the nerdy video, comment, and shut up and macs and codecs, macs are worthless, and PC's crash too much!

Macs are only worthless if all you care about is gaming and PCs only crash too much if you buy crappy hardware and/or install crappy software ;)

I miss Win 3.11 too :(
I don't miss Win 3.11 gaming at all, that's for sure :( One of these days I'll have to install Win3.11 on a virtualmachine and play around with it...maybe surf the web with a super old version of Netscape in it for the full effect (sure, you can run 'em in WinXP..it's just not the same :) ).

And you know, as much as I enjoyed making DOS bootdisks, hand tweaking autoexec.bat and config.sys to get that extra 1 or 2k of memory i needed to play a game, and make colorful boot menus, I'm pretty damn glad I don't have to deal with that stuff anymore. Everything has gotten so easy anymore (doubleclick an icon and stuff works!....most of the time) that it's easy to take it all for granted.

at least boot times were a hell of a lot quicker back then, right? :)

Curious. Where was it leaked to? Is it still available in the depths somewhere? (I wonder if it would actually run under Windows 3.11 with Win32s?)

Instead of complaining about having to use "the piece of shit Mac Windows Media Player" and that people should stick with older formats, why don't you complain about how MPlayerOSX and VLC don't properly support WMV9 on the Mac?

Because VLC is written by open-source hobbyists (?) who gave to deal with closed source, developer-unfriendly (?) codecs like WMV9 and Quicktime. Or something like that.
