i've heard of people doing obscure things to get pc drives working, but it involves using the other drive anyway, so it's pretty useless imo. i also think it has crappy compatability or something

i wanted to get a new drive just to have incase mine dies and all the ones i see on ebay are the thomposn drives -- some vendors listing a rather recent manufacture date - does anyone know if they have been fixed ? what i mean is has thier suposed bug been fixed?

Thompsons lasers die after a few years of normal use. If you mod the Xbox and play from the HDD, your DVDrom drives longevity is increased 100 fold, regardless of type.

But wouldnt that make your hard drive wear out faster?

Will a mod chip allow any geater compatibility of DVD drives?

New Xboxes have Hitachi, Philips, or Samsung.

HDD's are designed to load games for hours on end and are sealed units. DVDrom drives were never designed to be used like a HDD, but that is exactly what modern consoles do with the DVDrom drives. that's why they crap out in a few years, Xbox, PS2, doesn't matter.

Unless you upgrade the units to HDD use. Then reliability shoots through the roof.
