View Full Version : Ever play a game that just keeps cycling?

I hate cycling games. It's a sign that the developers aren't creative enough to give us an ending.

"I coulda' sworn I just saw that battleship 4 stages ago!"

That's what I was thinking upon playing Sky Shark on my NES a couple months ago. No matter how long I played, the game kept cycling the same stages, same enemies, and same music. I'm sure that if I didn't stop those few months ago, I'd still be playing it. Same goes for Moon Patrol; your checkpoints are infinite.

What games have you played that never ended?

I pulled out Dino Riki the other week and popped it into the game genie (so I could see the ending before I set the game aside to trade away) I hate that goddamn game, and when you beat the last boss, it just goes to level 1. No "Congratulation", no "surely revive zanoni", no "you are great player", Nothing!!

What do you mean checkpoints are infinite in Moon Patrol. There is definitely a Point "Z" in both the 1st and 2nd levels. However of course you just end up repeating the 2nd level over and over after completing it. ;)

Tiger-Heli for NES is an infinite cycler too.

I remember playing Spy Hunter on NES years ago with a Game Genie for Infinite Lives. Lies, lies, all lies. It was cycling for hours, I let it play itself while I watched some tv shows, came back and found out I ran out of lives. Infinite Lives, hah. :P

Duck Hunt, Hogans Alley, and Wild Gunman. Played them all to round "0" (100)

Lode Runner on the NES repeats levels 1-50 over and over and over and....

Jumpman Junior (for many systems) also "cycles" but it's kind of cool anyway because you get a little ending before repeating the 12 levels in a random order.

Then there are all the old RPGs which have endings, but never really end because they don't remember what you've done. For example, in Bard's Tale you can kill Mangar and win the game as many times as you want to.

I mean come on.. TONS of the classics never had endings. Space Invaders, etc.

As far as the cycling stages where you thought there would be an ending but there wasn't, XEVIOUS is the one that I remember. :) Especially since it had that semi-"boss" ship I thought you would reach an ending.. but of course you never do. :P

I actually brought this up a long time ago, but I believe the first arcade game to have a true ending was Cloak & Dagger in 1983. Of course this excludes sports games and player vs player games which by definition have to have an ending at some point.

Regarding Xevious, has anybody ever determined what the weird things are that come toward you just before the first big-bad-mama-ship, seemingly invulnerable, hover at either front corner of your ship, and then merge into one and haul ass off the screen right before the previously mentioned mama-ship comes into play?

I've seen other mention of this online, but nowhere have I found any explanation for them. As far as I can tell they are just decorative/window-dressing, but I've always wanted a definite answer as to what on earth they are.

Xenophobe for the NES repeated the same rounds. That wouldn't bother me quite so much if those rounds got tougher and tougher, but when you can play the game forever because the difficulty never increases it becomes a little pointless. A game that lasts forever should eventually throw so much at you that you can't keep up.
