View Full Version : Poll: How Many People Played as Princess Peach in SMB2?

I didn't get a lot of responses to my earlier post about my Gender in Video Games project, but after talking to a few people I know about the project and one of them mentioning how popular a character Peach was in SMB2 for both girls and boys, I'm hoping I can get enough people in a poll to actually use it as research. (Because the 4 people I talked to who said they used Peach isn't enough LOL) So answer away! Thanks in advance for your cooperation! Wee

Usually Luigi or Peach for me.

I played as Princess Toadstool, not princess peach. ;)
I used her once and a while.
Mario was my main stay character.

Shit yeah I used Toadstool. The world 4 with all the towers was soooo much shorter with her float.
Conversely, who the hell used Toad outside of the "digging" levels?

I never use her. It has nothing to do with the fact that she is <gasp> a girl, it's just that I didn't dig on the floating. I used to use Luigi exclusively, but I use Mario a lot now too.

I used whoever was the best for each level. Teamwork is where it's at ;)

I used peach quite a bit. But then again, i was aweful at that game, and i've never beaten it.

I always used Peach for every level when I was younger. Her floating seemed to make things so much easier. I guess a lot of young boys wouldn't want to play as a princess. Didn't seem to bother me!
Now when I play I use all the characters to keep it interesting.

I split time between Luigi and the Princess. Sometimes Toad, when I didn't feel like not sucking.

I rarely ever used Toadstool. Or Toad. Or even Luigi... It's Mario all the way, baby! :P

LMAO, I actually use both names in the project. I'm working on the outline so far and I put it as Princess Toadstool/Peach. I still don't understand the name change *shrug*
These are all excellent responses, more or less what I expected. Thanks a LOT people!!! I appreciate it.

Why the hell should my gender dictate who I can play as in a videogame?
Anyway, Princess TOADSTOOL was my 2nd favourite player-selectable character in that game (Luigi I my favourite, thanks to his jumping skills).

I played Peach from time to time but mainly stuck with Toad. For some reason, I just love playing as Toad in the Mario Brother games that offer him as a playable character. But I must say, Peachs' floating ability is quite nice but then evil in some situations.

I used her most of the time. Her floating just made the game easier, and I remember some places where you could skip parts of the levels with her. Plus, I just kind of liked her.
As a guy, I've never had a problem playing female characters in games. When I have a choice in a survival horror game or RPG like Romancing Saga, I'll usually pick a female first. My first Romancing Saga playthrough was Aisha.

I play as peach every single time I play. It's all about the float jumps biatch.

Peach's floating ability made parts of the game very, very easy. Great for a game where you had to play through in one sitting to finish (or leave your NES on all night, like I did on my first successful playthrough on SMB3).
Peach was my first choice, then Luigi because of the aforementioned high jump (Luigi also makes SMB2J less of a pain in the ass, but only a little bit). Mario, and Toad... not so much.
Good luck with your project.

Absolutely. She offered the best control over your character, by far.
Screw gender roles, I too play females all the time. Especially in 3rd person games. My main character in PSO is usually a HUnewearl, and you'll get called gay by HUmar sephiroths all the time. Yes, i'm such a fag for staring at a female ass all day instead of a male one. LOL

Pink? I didn't care, that skank could FLOAT.
Haha. absolutely. It all depended on the level I was on. If it was a water level, I used Mario. If it was a level where you had to jump a lot, definitely the Skank.

Hell yes, I used the Princess all the time. I pretty much echo what everybody else said though, namely... Toad for the digging levels and I think it was 1-2 where you could get 12 coins or so at the end. Other than that, Luigi could jump, but I always overshot my targets, hence floating worked much better, so it depended a lot on the level.
As for gender roles, maybe it crossed my mind every now and again when I was younger, but not enough to matter. The older I get though, the more I pick female characters in games just to mess with my friends. Yes, I'm a guy and no, I'm not sure what that says about me... :)

WOW! I voted the truth, that I have never played this game (got 1 and 3, but have never gotten my hands an 2 and bought it) and there was only 1 other person like me. Who are you man, now you can now that you are not alone, I am with you, (woops, proably shouldnt have said that. now he wont come forward just to make sure that I never find him. never trust the crazy fat guy. even I know that, and I AM the crazy fat guy \\sigh\\).
I used Peach about 75% of the time, and Luigi the other 25%. Peach's floating was just too good to pass up.

100% Toad here.

I used to switch off between Peach and Luigi. I used them because of their floating/high jump abilities. Had nothing to do with their gender.

Good, I'm getting the responses I'm looking for: gender not being a matter of choice, but abilities.

I was about 50/50 peach and toad. I'm suprised at all the love for luigi in this thread as he was easily my least favorite character in that game. What was with his legs when he was jumping anyway?

I want to thank everyone in this thread for partaking in the poll and sharing your views on SMB2 character preferences. It really helped me out. I got the desired results too. But, alas, it is 11PM where I am, and my outline is done, so I think I will call it quits for tonight. Whatever the poll is at Sunday night I will include in my paper, since it's due Monday. The presentation isn't due until after Thanksgiving, but I have gotten a lot of requests to share the finished product and I will do.
Thanks again to all of you for your input and support. This is why I love Digital Press.
Good night, and I'll see (read) you all tomorrow!

Pretty much 100% Toadstool here. Until I discovered the warp to world 7 in world 5 I would warp to 4, play through to 5 then use Luigi on the right level for like 30 seconds just to warp then Toadstool again all the way.

When I was younger, I always used the Princess, but now, it is all about Toad. He can jump higher and run faster than anyone while holding an item. He can also get the most coins in the reverse world. Princess is only useful for the aformentioned short cuts, or level 5-1.

Luigi was my main character, but I'd always use Peach as backup due to her floatation power.

I did a few times. I really enjoyed playing with all characters in the game on different parts.

I used Peach and Toad mostly. Peach for the floating and Toad because of his speed and responsiveness. Luigi came in handy on a couple levels too.
Mario was the most useless character.

I almost exclusively used the Princess. Sometimes I would play as Luigi or Toad just to mix things up though.
I ALWAYS used Princess Toadstool back in the day when I was 7 (and probably a lot more gender biased than I am now). Now I use Toad - go figure.
Off topic - is anyone else looking forward to Super Princess Peach for DS?

Princess. Always.
It was because of the float thing though. Gender never played into the equation.
That, and I think she was also a faster jumper, if I remember right.
Although, Princess was also my favorite car in Mario Kart for the SNES. Though I preferred Yoshi in the N64 version. Why? I don't know.

toad is the only one who can pick up all the coins twice on the first and second levels :D
I usually always end up using her, especially for the ice levels. I usually end up mixing who I use half way through the game, because it usually never works out using just one person for me.

indeed she is most awesome for the ice levels of all others they are the most fun with her. duck beezo, hop flurry. duck slide under beezos and ice, hop float more flurries...
Does anyone remember the Game Genie codes that gave all characters UNLIMITED floating abilities? That was especially fun on the Albatoss level.

I would use only Toad or the Princess. I never understood how anyone could use Luigi through most of the game since I'd always hippity hop my ass too far past whatever target I was trying to land on.

Always play the girl. If I'm staring at a screen for 40 hours - want something beautiful to look at.
Baldur's Gate I stripped the girl completely naked - 'cept for bra and panties. Too bad the game was not as much fun!

I played as Princess Toadstool, not princess peach.
Lol, yeah, she wasn't called Peach in America until SM 64.
I never use Toad or Mario. I use Peach for the whole game, except for about 30 seconds in 5-2 (or is it 5-3) to get that extra 1/2 block higher that Peach can't do except for a well-timed jump off of a bomb...which I do sometimes anyway.
Damn, the game should have been Super Peach Land for all I cared for the other characters. Lol, er, Super Princess Toadstool Land...sorry.

I played as Mrs. Peach all the time. I guess maybe I wasn't too good at video games as a child, so the fact that she could hover was a big advantage. It helped get out of a bunch of spots where I didn't time my moves quite right. Wasn't she a all around good choice as far as speed and such went too?

I found her to be more comfortable for my style of control. Eventually i mastered all the characters, but I still preffer Peach.
BTW I'm a boy.

She's my #1 character. However, I can beat the game in about 15 minutes with all of them.
Luigi would be my second kick..... I mean pick. :P

I used her quite a bit, and some Mario thrown in. I always liked to try out the girl characters when games actually had them.

I voted "sometimes". Here is my "usage rating" of the four characters:
Luigi (Most of the time)
Mario & Peach (Sometimes)
Toad (Rarely)

I used Princess Toadstool all the time. But only for her body.
(Because she could float. Yeah... float. ;) )
I used Toad a lot too because he was faster than everyone else, even if he couldn't jump as high, but for a while I ONLY fooled Toadstool.

Princess all the time EXCEPT:
Digging levels - toad or mario
Massive coin rape levels - toad (like the waterfall one where you can get like 12 coins twice with toad if you fall down 3 screens to the landing in the middle)
1-2: Luigi because he can skip a large portion of the level.
If I wasn't sure what the level was, and I wasn't feeling Princess, I'd pick Mario because he is all-around.
