View Full Version : my favourite 'character waiting' animation is....
so what's your favorite animation from a game character when you don't touch him for a few minutes?
I remember the first time i saw one of these animations.
Back in the day playing Sonic, i put down the controller to have a mouthfull of tea, Hmmmm nice and warm... WHAT THE!!!... did sonic just look at his watch? i know he taps his foot but how the hell can he see i'm taking my time over a cup of tea!!!??
the thing is, although i obviously knew it was a piece of time delay animation - i still felt compelled to put my tea back down and get on with the game.
Kind of bad manners to leave him waiting i guess!
It was a simple thing but put a smile on my face and seemed to give him more of a personality.
Since then i've always left all characters a few seconds to see what they do - i've many favorites but lets hear some of yours first...
over to you... i'm waiting!!! (looks at watch!)

"I'm waiiiiiiiiiiiiting."
Hehe, my brother and I used to think watching Sonic get impatient was so cool. The animations got more amusing with each sequel as well :D My favourite was when he'd lay down and he'd look out at the screen like he was just about to drop dead from boredom.

Commander Keen moons you on one of the pyramid levels of Keen 4 if you wait too long.
Also, on Sonic CD, if you wait for 3 minutes, Sonic will run off the screen and the game will be over.

I can't decide between Mario's dream about pasta in SM64 and Conker playing Killer Instinct on his Game Boy.

The original (I think).
Major Havoc.
Simple, yet highly influential.

Mario falling asleep is the most memorable for me

Add one for Major Havoc. Sonic copied him.
(Remember when Arcade Antics used Major Havoc as his avatar?)

Earthworm Jim. When he used his head for a lasso the first time I couldn't believe what I was seeing. If memory serves there was like a half dozen of the animations.
Yamazaki from KOF 2K3 they added a crazy creapy wait animation.

I always liked pacman 2: the new adventures, where pacman would rap on your screeen loudly and impatiently if you left him hanging.

Outrun 2. You know the chunky fellow in red that waves the starting flag? Well, wait for the starting countdown, then just sit at the line. After a few seconds, he starts doing some really bizarre stuff.

Sonic 1 was one of my first games so that is the first time I saw an animation like that and I still love seeing it.
For me it's a tie between Mario (Mario 64) and Link (Zelda:OoT).

Sonic 1 and Sonic 3
When Sonic starts pointing "Let's Go" that was awesome
Mario 64 would be the best, when he falls asleep and starts talking about Ravoli..simply classic!

I would have to say the Sonic animation because I really don't remember any other ones or none of the others stick out in my mind.
A long time ago, when blockbuster used to rent systems (they may still do, I don't know, don't have a blockbuster around here) my parents rented a regular Genesis for me and I got two games, Sonic and Double Dragon. I remember leaving Sonic motionless and he did his animations and it was pretty funny back then. That was a fun weekend.

Either Major Havoc tapping his feet.
Or Jet Set/Grind Radio - Your guy starts dancing wherever he's standing.

Definitely Sonic, my AIM avatar right now is actually him tapping his toes and looking at his watch. :D
just got edge magazine and it reminded me of another unusual waiting animation.
remember jimmy whites whirlwind snooker by archer maclean on the Amiga?
when ur waiting to take a shot and faces appear on the snooker balls before sticking their tongue out at you!
this was a good one on a game where i wouldn't have expected it!
ps. do i also remember flies appearing on the table if you wait too long?

It was more the impression that there were flies on your TV screen but yes, you're right. I believe there was also a fly-around the table if you waited long enough - by a bee I think?

Ah, true. Amazing game!
A couple of my favorites I haven't seen mentioned yet: Sketch Turner from Comix Zone (Genesis), and a few N64 titles: Dash Rendar in Shadows of the Empire and Link in the Zelda titles. Not super amusing, but still interesting. Possibly Klonoa as well, but I don't really remember what it would've been (sad considering I played the game a bunch just this last week)...
I've noticed the personas in Killer 7 have interesting wait animations.
I think Sam Stone (Serious Sam) had an animation as well, and Gordon Freeman's animations from the original Half-Life never cease to amuse me - especially the one where he plays with a snark!
