What sort of packaging was there inside the box for this? Was it a special styrofoam tray? Or.....

A plastic Tray.

... and that damn special controller. Cool as hell and plays GREAT until it BREAKS (which it will if you play with it for any amount of time.)

Yeah. I've had 3 of those things and they've all broke on me. Worse than 5200 controllers.

You know, I've never once seen one of those controllers in the wild...I don't think even when it was new did I even see it in stores. At least my memory says so (maybe I did see them in stores...who knows?).

Anyway, with that said, I see the cart pretty commonly. Strange.

Does the Arkanoid controller do anything interesting when used with any other carts?

I was so happy to find my Vaus controller in the wild for $1.50. I have only ever once seen a loose copy of Arkanoid in the wild, and that was at a pawn shop for $17. I was asking since I bought a copy with a beat-up (but not terrible) copy boxed w/manual off the 'bay, and was wondering what tray should be there. If it's not I'll just carve one out of styro.

Thanks for the help furor.

I have the opposite problem, I found a vaus controller in the wild for $3 in a box with miscellanious NES controllers, seems to be in good shape - however... I've NEVER come across a freaking copy of Arkanoid.

You can't move the VAUS fast enough without this controller. Most of them have problems going "all" the way to the right of the screen.

Even after adjusting the friggin' thing. I personally suspect that this issue has directly resulted in the death of most of the dead Arkanoid controllers out there.

How does the SNES Arkanoid play, since it doesn't have a paddle/vaus controller?

Man that's nuts, I used to pass on Arkanoid all the time at my fleas because I figured they were worthless without the controller. I prefer Doh It Again anyway. If people are actually interested in trading for loose copies I suppose I'll start picking them up.

You can fix this problem very easily. All you need in a small exacto blade or a sharp knife. You have to pull off the knob and do some chipping or cutting away.

Actually some nail clippers might do the work.

I had the same problem with mine, I used some cutting pliers and just cliped the small pieace off.

When you remove the knob, you will see which part needs cutting/clipping.

After this, your controller will move all the way to both sides.

I've actually seen several of those things at Funcoland in my area, around 1999 or so. I still regret not buying one or two of them...

The Nevada desert... or am I confused again?

Well, I mean, I don't think THAT many controllers could have broken and been tossed... there must have been 10,000 copies sold! Or is that grossly underestimated?

I found my controller at a Goodwill. It looked to be in fine shape and I was excited to have it as I had the cart at home. Plugged the damn thing in... nothing. Crapheap. I may open it up one day and investigate.

How does the SNES Arkanoid play, since it doesn't have a paddle/vaus controller?

With the D-pad. The ball is fairly slow to compensate for the limited control responsiveness. Still a fun game.

Are there any resources on the web that actually go over fixing one of these controllers? I actually bought this game retail back in the 80's (unfortunately I was very young and the box got tossed). I still have my original Vaus lying around, but as you'd probably expect, it's been busted for 15 years. I've tried opening it before bt it appears most of the parts in there are glued together. The smaller black knob (next to the dial) is completely missing as well.

I'd love to get this thing operational agin.
