Sorry if this has been posted before, but I can't use keywords in the DP search engine for some reason. Anyways, from what I can tell, R-Type has been released on tons of platforms. Which home version is the best? Also, is R-Type Final different from the original R-Type or is it just a "Director's Cut" type release?

Personally, I'd go for R-Types on the PSone. You get the original plus R-Type 2 on one disk. Excellent value for money. And while you're at it, get R-Type Delta too; absolutely fabulous game.
The PCEngine version is very impressive, although it's spread over two HuCards. The Complete CD version has the full game on one CD along with a different audio track and animated intros. Well worth getting the CD version.
Anyone think it's strange that there's no R-Type game on any Sega console since the Master System? Surely the Saturn deserved a conversion of R-Type Leo.

I echo both of the above games. It also wouldn't hurt for you to go out and grab a copy of R-Type Final, too, seeing as it's only 15 dollars new at most stores.

Another vote for R-Types. Awesome emulation of it and R Type 2 along with having a neat little museum thingy.
R Type Final is a pretty flippin' sweet game, but sometimes you'll feel like you're forced to play with crappy ships just to unlock cooler ships and whatnot. Also, there's some slowdown issues in the game. It's quite a different direction from R Type Delta (which was much faster paced and much more difficult).
In fact, check out R Type Delta for Playstation right now as well. FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC experience. Plus it's the introduction of the R-X Albatross (based off of the X-Multiply ship). Lord do I love playing as that sucker. :)

No question for me, the Turbografx version is the best you can possibly get. I like it better than the arcade version, the MAME emulation, and R-Types. I was a fan for years before I played the T-grafx version and I was absolutely astonished at how much better that version is.
I thought the SNES version was underrated, yeah there's some slowdown but most of the time that helps your cause. Super R-Type has the best music/sound of all the R-Types.

I really liked the SNES R-Type as well. Slow down is your friend in some cases! LOL
R-Type Final is also a fun game, I get a little discombobulated by the backgrounds at times, though. *_*

TG-16 version. The best there is.

I'm curious...why do ya'll like the TG16 version so much? It had less graphic detail, the resolution was different so there was a little horizontal wobble going on (similar to the US Playstation ports of Gunbird and Strikers 1945 II). Does that extra boss and cutscene really make it all up for you?
Also, why would you prefer Super R Type to R Type 2?
R Type 3 was great on SNES, but unfortunatly the GBA version wasn't very good...but that wasn't really the developer's fault per se (http://tinyurl.com/acjcg) (scroll down to the posts by Snake)

I don't know which is best, but the SMS version is my personal favourite.
It's surprisingly good for an 8-bit port, and one of the best SMS games.

my personal favorite, is the SMS verison and the GBC "R-Type DX" yet I would not recommend playing R-Type DX on a B&W gameboy...that is literally playing with fire...

Hard to say...the TG-16 version just feels "right"...maybe it plays a touch faster? R-Types is nice but it has loading...who needs that in an R-Type game?
When you ask why you would prefer Super R Type to R Type 2, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean to the arcade game? I'm not sure that I do as I never played the arcade game that much. Actually I didn't say I "preferred" it, just that I thought that version was underrated.
As for the newer games (Leo/Delta/Final), I never got into any of those. They're OK.

Super R Type is essentially R Type 2 (arcade) with a new intro stage, jumbled stage arrangement, missing effects, slowdown, and no mid level checkpoints.
I never spent a whole lot of time with Leo, but Delta and Final are the games that really appeal to me the most out of the series. If you have any love for horizontal shmups at all, they're well worth tracking down for the low prices they command. I'd go so far as to say that Delta was better than G Darius, if that means anything to you :(
re: loadtimes, i thought they weren't all that annoying and they didn't get in the way of the actual gameplay. It felt nice to have near perfect ports of R Type I and II once and for all. Plus enabling stat bar transparency was a nice plus :)

Can you play the PSX R-Types on a PS2 without any problems? I'd like to do so because my PSX is stored away somewhere. Also, faster loading.

Not to mention I think it was the FIRST port of R-Type to the home! (correct me if I'm wrong). It pretty much was the sole initial reason I went out and bought an SMS.. how could you not when R-Type was out for the system :)
That being said the TG16 one is sweet... none of that dual hu-card thing like the original PCE release. The only thing about it is the screen scrolls up and down rather than you being able to see the whole playfield. Still... nice.

Yep, both R Types and R Type Delta work dandy on a normal PS2. After I bought a new japanese ps2 (gotta love the pink!) R Types and R Type Delta were among the first games I imported (the reprints were cheaper than the US versions :) ) and played the dickens out of.

I've owned the SMS, TG, and SNES R-Type games.
I must say the TG is my fave of all of them simply because of the consistent 'feel' of it all, and it's very sharp and smooth.
The SMS was very impressive for that console, but it's really hard to go back to it after playing the TG version.
I'm a huge SNES fan, but the best things about the SNES version were some nice colorful graphics, cool music, and a fresh face on it all. But even so, I like the 'feel' and smoothness of the TG version a bit better. Flicker and slowdown don't bother me sometimes, but it bothered me a bit on the SNES port.

I'd hafta go with the SMS version, as well.
I remember the PC engine version of R-Type had to be put on 2 cards. Was the TG16 version the same way? It's been so long, I completely forgot. The TG version would be my second choice. But the 2 card thing bugged me for some reason.
I would've liked to see the FM Towns version... Lucky Japanese.

R-type complete for pc-engine would be my favorite. Both games on one disc and a great soundtrack. After that would be R-type final which is one of the best ps2 games in my opinion. I wasn't a big fan of the snes ones, I like my shooters fast. Also stay far away from the gba version of R-type 3. That one was horrible.

R-Type Final was fantastic, and is one of my fav games from this gen.
And to answer your question, it's a completely different game from the first.

Commodore Amiga probably had the first home version. 16-bit and near-identical to arcade

One version that hasn't been mentioned yet is the Spectrum version - a great technical achievement and damned fun to play too.

R-Type III (SNES), R-Type Delta (PSX) and R-Type Final (PS2) are my favourites in the series.
R-Type (SMS) is very impressive, and very faithful.
Super R-Type (SNES) is pretty average.

The best home version is probably R-Types, but both the SMS and especially the TG-16 versions of the game were incredible in their respective times.
Gameplay wise, my favorite of the series is the SNES R-Type III. Everything about it is fantastic.
On a side note, not only did the SMS have a great version of R-Type, but Darius 2/Sagaia was shockingly good. Check it out if you haven't already.
