View Full Version : The best game you have ever played?

For me, I have to say Tomba 2. I'm serious. It's not FFVII, it's not Goldeneye 007, it's not Sonic The Hedgehog 2, it's not Street Fighter II, it's not Super Metroid, it's not Zelda The Orcarina of time. It's this little unknown and under-rated gem for the PSX. It still is my favorite platform game of all time. When I first played it, I was so amazed at the graphics, and it was so much fun to play, and very memorable as well. None of the missions/goals the game gave me was worthless, I enjoyed every one of them. You gotta dig a dude with the long spikey pink hair.

Now, where's my Tomba 3? Hmmmm.

I always wanted to give Tomba a try. I had the demo and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Planescape: Torment for the PC is undoubtedly my favorite game ever. It just blows my mind how good this game is. The writing is magnificent, the settings are fantastic, everything about the game just screams quality.

I also like Suikoden 2. :D

I would have to pick Super Metroid. For me, it had everything: great gameplay, excellent graphics (for its time), great atmosphere, music that was hard to believe came out of a 16-bit system. And it's the only game I ever played from dusk to dawn...

Super Mario bros 3

For me, I would have to say Beyond Good & Evil. Practically everything about it appealed to me. It's a shame we'll probably never see a sequel. :/

Super Mario Bros 3 probably. Beaten it more times than I can count, awesome levels, music, graphics for it's time, items, and everything about the game is... Super! :D LOL

Two words.... Shenmue... Dreamcast...

Enough said! 8-)

Incredible graphics for the time(and still very good even now), Insane amount of detail to every little object in the game, Epic story, Memorable characters, Unique gameplay(with the awesome Virtua Fighter style fighting and the QTE's), Everything about this game is quality. And the atmosphere is unmatched and still the best at drawing me in to this day. This is as close as it gets to going to Japan(without actually going there). IMO

:D

Aw, dammit! I hate this question! I can never decide which game is my favorite!

Space Invaders was my first.
Pac-Man got me hooked.
Jet Set Radio is my fave of recent years.

Pac-Man, probably, overall. I fell in love with it the very first time I played it. Still love it like I did way back when. :)

I can never decide either, yet my all time ground-breaking games I have ever played

Fable
Shenmue 1/2
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
Dracula X Rondo of Blood
CastleVania Symphony of the Night
Street Fighter 3 (NG, 2nd Impact, and 3rd Strike)

Perhaps Final Fantasy Tactics. But I've played through it so many times that I got sick of it. So it wouldn't be my "deserted island" choice.

I probably logged more hours into Super SF2 for snes than any other game, and I still fire that one up. So maybe that'd be my choice.

Xcom: UFO Defense. Only this one. The others weren't nearly as good.

For me Im going to go by the games I was most excited about owning.
1. Streetfighter 2, and Super SF2

2. Mortal Kombat 2 & 3

3. Tekken 2 & 3

4. Resident Evil 2

I one true love is really Defender: Stargate. Boy would I love to have the arcade cab.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Near perfect. Only the menu system takes it down a notch. Small potatoes.

Radiant Silvergun is a close second. Pure class all the way. Possibly Treasure's greatest moment. The US version of Astro Boy gives it a run for its money though. At times I have been known to consider Astro Boy the best game Treasure has ever made. It is just perfect in almost every way.

I can't answer this question other than to say, Mario.
Take that as you may, it could be any of them- SMB,SMB 2, SMB3, SMW, SMAS, SMK, SM64, SMK64, SM64DS, SMKDS.......
I love them all.
I can't answer this question.

Although in thinking about this, I do have to give a special mention to Blast Corps. It was never a million seller- but there is just something about the addictive gameplay that kept me coming back for a loooong time, and I could still sit down and play for way too long. :D

I think Chrono Trigger because I love the story, the characters, just everything about the game, it's amazing

it's just an outstanding game.

but there are really so many games that I love that it's just hard for me to decide

I also really Like Final Fantasy VI and Metal Gear Solid 3 so i dunno it's a hard decision

I know this is the retro gaming forum but to me the answer is Final Fantasy X. I’ve been sucked into many games in my life but never had I been into a game that much. Almost everything is flawless and completely refined. The graphics, the gameplay, the story, the music, its all there.

I really can't nail it down to just one game. However, those 4 would be contenders for top honors:

Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros. 3
Snatcher
Baseball Stars

Rabid Peanut-Butter

It's a toss up between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Mega Man 2 for me. I can play those over and over again and never tire of them.

Its either going to be Shenmue or a version of Championship Manager (last one i played was Football Manager 2005, and it was the first one i've played since 97/98 and i have now given it up, i'm not letting it take over again - its far too addictive)

@ CaryMG: Your enthusiasm is wonderful, but it would be nice if you could go a little bit easier on all the screenshots. Lots of folks here are still on dial-up, and when you add a million huge screenshots to a post like this, it also wreaks havoc with the layout.

If you could shrink 'em down a hair or in this case leave out a bunch of them since 1 per game that you've listed is plenty, that would be most welcomed. Thanks.

I tried for FIVE hours on November 21st to re-size all of the pics but while the re-sizer'd say "The Picture Has Been Reduced By Half " or whatever, I'd put it in my message it it'd still be the same size!! lol
But I'm so sorry for the inconvience -- that it stretched everything out was so a concern of mine .... -- and I've just changed it to 1 pic for each game ....
And 1 pic per game looks better anyway -- more elegant. 8^ ]

Again -- my apologies for messin' up the message window.
And it turns out that I made a few mistakes as well -- I placed a pic for "The Empire Strikes Back" instead of "Star Wars: Arcade" lol 8^ ] -- so it's good that I had ta re-do my message. lol

It's all about the games you can play over and over.

Pac-Man: You first try to learn the rules, and then how to exploit them, like counting the chase/corner times of the ghosts on each level.
Robotron: It takes 3 games to warm you up, but at that 4th game.. hoo boy. I like max lives on max difficulty.
Archon: Only with a human player, and one who's played the game before, but still, I love it.
Jumpman: Wonderful
Super Metroid: Poetry of motion. SM has to have the smoothest motion contol on any game. And once 'ya start trying speed runs

Virtua Tennis (DC), or Top Spin (Xbox)

Final Fantasy X. I’ve been sucked into many games in my life but never had I been into a game that much. Almost everything is flawless and completely refined.
That's funny - most people hate it. I too thought it was fun.

My all-time favorite is Missile Command 2600. The sounds - the nuclear destruction - it's a lovely thing. And great for worktime breaks.

That would be Ninja Gaiden II: Dark Sword of Chaos for NES. It is the only game I have ever played that I could give a perfect 10 to. Why did Tecmo have to ruin it on the SNES "remake"? WHY? Final Fantasy IV (still THE RPG to beat) and Super Mario Bros. 3 come very, very close.

Heres the thing Im sure that for many of us here there is a difference in what we think of as the BEST OR GREATEST GAME THAT WE HAVE EVER PLAYED and what are OUR FAVORITE GAMES THAT WE HAVE PLAYED.
anyho here goes:

It pains me to admit that the best and greatest (as in as close to perfect as possible) game that I have ever played would be: STARCRAFT on PC yes a PC game and I hate  PC gaming for the most part.

Now when it comes to home consoles it would be a tie between the original Legend of Zelda on NES and SUPER METROID on SNES those games remind me of the sheer perfection that the big N was once capable of and still hits on from time to time to this day.

Now those are both 2-D games so the Best 3-D game(s) that I have ever had the pleasure of playing are:

Zelda:Ocarina of Time- N64
and
Shenmue-Dreamcast

Both are very different but excel so far beyond anything else in their respective genres that I have to nominate BOTH of them for the best 3-D games Ive ever played; Hell Shenmue created ITS OWN GENRE @_@ how many games can claim that?

I think there is a great possibility that Zelda:TWILIGHT PRINCESS on Gamecube could become the most perfect I.E. BEST VIDEOGAME EVER MADE but well see wont we?

i think this is the most dificult question to answer for a gamer

there have been some games listed that i think are great games and some games i cant belive are someones best

it is truly too hard to single out one

as for me i can honestly say that Bio Force ape was the best game i have ever played

seriously

realy

kidding

for me the best id have to say mostly exist on a home computer

i have to point out that im answering this question based on games that i have played and i have not played them all

i would like list my favorite games but i cant

in thinking about the best game i have ever played - my thoughts kept comming back to the same game beating out my top favorites over and over.

that game is ........

Civilization II - id say the whole series but since we are singleing out an individual game i choose II since it was my favorite

Mega Man X4 for the Saturn. I got that game for Christmas I think in 98, beat it and and have beaten it countless times and insanely obsess about it still to this day. I have the PS version, and the JP Sat version, and only the JP Sat version has gone unbeaten.

I remember when I was in college I made a friend of mine quite mad. He had gotten it for the PS and couldn't even get past the intro stage. He swore it was a mistake for me to choose Zero. In about an hour I got to the final battle w/Sigma and I would have won if he hadn't been sitting there screaming "DIE FUCKER!" to me at the top of his lungs. LOL I may not have beaten it in front of him, but the satisfaction of making him look like a novice was priceless.

Popping in to mention a couple I haven't seen in thread yet:

Alundra (PSX) - Terrific storyline that tied my emotions in a knot even when I was old enough to know better. I have never wanted to kill an endgame boss the way I wanted to kill Melzas, and unironically yelling heartfelt, cheesy hero-dialogue at the TV right before the fight started is one of my most cherished gaming memories. (Yeah, I was living alone at the time. Obviously.) Also notable as the game that made me realize how badly translated most other Japanese games are by comparison.

Devil Dice (PSX) - How this puzzler was not a huge hit I'll never understand. My favorite puzzle game to this day.

Ancient Domains of Mystery (PC) - Rogue-likes aren't everyone's cup of tea, and that's fine. I will probably catch some flak for listing a rogue-like game in the "best games ever" thread when there are so many terrific games with graphics out there. I'm okay with that. In terms of gameplay, this one is deeper than most of them. I've been playing this since 1999, and I'm still discovering new things in it. At the same time, it's not like NetHack, which requires a master's degree in NetHackOlogy to play past the first half-dozen levels. (Those who understand, will understand.) My profile on this board is based on a prominent NPC from ADOM.

I'll also second Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) for being entertaining for all the wrong reasons--and a couple of the right ones too. Ridiculously convoluted plot + English translation handled by an infinite number of monkeys banging away at keyboards = high comedy. I should stress, however, that getting all the classes, items and abilities is so much fun that you won't care that you don't know what's going on. Good stuff.

Half-Life (PC)

The game is a remarkable experience. Even today it stands tall as one of the best FPS games ever made. Incredible immersion and gameplay. The game delivers in every aspect. The game looked and sounded great and with the High Definition upgrade or Half-Life Source the game looks good even by today's standards. Yet what really sticks out is the incredible gameplay. You had to think. You really needed to plan out what you were going to do before you did it. The puzzles could be annoying but were no real problem. The game truly is the thinking man's first person shooter. It has possibly the largest mod community ever and gave us Half-Life 2 also one of the best games in history. This game gave us Counter Strike, What more could you want?

Also you guys may want to look out for the full Half-Life game done over in source. Not the HL Source that came with the collectors edition but a FULL conversion of the classic game. I saw a article about it in a PC Gamer I will look for a link later :)

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PSX) i think i put about 2k hours into that game.

Perfect Dark (N64) is a close second contrary to popular belief this game is actually the better game.
