So does any one know which game gets the title of "Most Ported"?

Doom and Tetris immediately jump to mind.

Gee, I thought it might've been one of the Pac-Man games...they go all the way back to the Atari 2600. Of course, you might not call those "ports" officially, but still...

The Resident Evil series.

I don't know if I could call this the most, but surely it's in the top 10 : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania

Castlevania has made it onto :

Arcade
NES/Famicom
MSX
Game Boy
SNES
Genesis
PC Engine
Sharp X68000
PSX
Saturn
Nintendo 64
Gameboy Advance
PS2
Gameboy DS
Xbox

Only major platforms I see missing are Dreamcast and PC, and maybe GameGear, but that was sort of a sleeper.

Rogmeister

I don't think we can count those Castlevania games because they're not all the same game. They are different games in the same series.

My immediate thought was Tetris, but it's probably a classic arcade-era game like Asteroids or Missile Command. (Maybe Space Invaders?)

Ancient Land of Ys - PC (DOS and Windows), PS2, NES, SMS, Mobile. MSX, TG-16

Double Dargon is way up there - Arcade, NES, SMS, Atari (2600 and 7800), GBA, C64, Amiga, Gameboy, Genesis, Game Gear, Lynx, Mobile, Handheld

I'd probly stick with one of the classics, like pacman. Compilations count if they're the same game. Theres gotta be a pacman on virtually every system if you include compilations.

Depends on what you mean with porting. You mean the same game released for many consoles or a serie? Like Castlevania was only released for Famicom/NES and arcade. The other Castlevania games arent the same.

My guess would be Pacman. That must be the most ported game.

Lemmings has to be way up there too!

Not sure if I'd count the arcade collections, before stand alone games. I think Tetris is #1

We've done this one before. IIRC the answer is...

Frogger.

Frogger? Are you sure, Dave?

Isn't it Pac-Man?

SlayerX

I was going to say Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES, SNES, GBA), but I forgot about Pac-Man, so Pac-Man will be my answer

Theme Park (Amiga, Mac, PC, CD32, SNES, MD, MCD, Jag, 3DO, PS1 and Sat)

Primal Rage (GB, SNES, GG, MD, 32X, SAT, PS1, 3DO and Jag CD and most lkely also PC)

Think are the games with most conversions released around the same time. But that was around 95, the year with most consoles getting commercial support.

I'd go with either Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man.

Probably Ms. Pac-Man, it seemed to get pushed more in the late 80s than the original.

Certainly Miner 2049er ranks up there.

Lots of great choices there.

Just for those wonderin the rules of defining a port are as follows.

I must the be estentially the same game accross all system. For example tetris lives by many names but it's still the same game. Castlevania is just a series that has been spread accross dozens of consoles and doesn't count.

Also the port does not have to be offical. That's why i suggested Doom for the title. As soon as there's a new device someone ports Doom to it. Hell Doom's even on the Ipod.

Lemmings has to be way up there too!

Yeah, I believe that Lemmings has had around 30+ offical ports.

definetly not the most ported, but I think Myst would deserve an honorable mention.

And if you include the countless ports made in compilations by Namco (the different Namco Museums/Namco Anniversary plus Pac-Man Collection), just in the past few years there've been many Pac-Man ports. Yet in arcades, Ms. Pac-Man is more commonly found that Pac-Man...

It's gotta be Pac-Man. These are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head:

Arcade (obviously)
Atari 2600
Atari 5200
Atari 400/800
Colecovision
Intellivision
Commodore Vic-20
Commodore 64
TI-99 (Right?)
MSX
NES
Probably the Spectrum
PS1 (Namco Museums)
PS2, XBox, Gamecube (Ditto, twice)
Gameboy Color
Gameboy Advance (Pac Man Collection, Namco 50th Anniversary Collection, NES Classics)
Several plug-and-play units
Countless LCD/LED/VFD handhelds

The scary thing is that I've probably left out quite a few.

Man if we're counting unofficial ports, it's gotta be Tetris :) There's tetris for EVERYthing lol. Only other possibility would be Pac Man since it was out way before.

Why has nobody said Space Invaders yet?

Arcade
Atari 2600
Atari 5200
Astrocade
Gameboy
Gameboy Color
GameGear
Mobile phone
MSX
Nintendo 64
NES
Nuon
PC
Playstation
Saturn
SG-1000
SNES
Wonderswan

And that's not even including the variants of Space Invaders like Space Invaders DX, Super Space Invaders, Space Invaders Plus, Space Invaders Evolution, etc.

Frogger?
The original thread I referenced might have been back in the EZ Board days. But I was able to find this one that also mentions Frogger as a distinct possibility:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56748&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=frogger+ported&start=25

Frogger was ported to systems that Pac-Man never made it onto, like the Timex-Sinclair and Tomy Tutor, so I'm still thinking that Frogger might well be the winner. Frogger appears on darn near every single console listed in this thread too, but it's often overlooked. Even if it's not the top, it's still mighty high on the list. :)

Home brew.

My only point was that we've done this before and the winner - back then - was Frogger. It's definitely a top contender for the spot, as is Pac-Man and/or Ms. Pac-Man.

You can add 360 to the Pac-man list since you can play it while Ridge Racer 6 loads, but my guess for most ported game would be Tetris.

Doom, Tetris, and Theme Park are ones I automatically think of, but then you have to think of all the times that the classics such as Pacman and Space Invaders have been duplicated to appear on various "Retro" compilations...

Every generation has these so called "Retro" compilations, and you can bet your bottom dollar that Pacman or Space Invaders appear on most of them.

But, if I had to nominate one game for the title, I would possibly say the original Sonic The Hedgehog Mega Drive game, which has since reappeared on various compilations (Two of which are compilations on the Mega Drive itself!)

As far as I know, Sonic has appeared on:

Sonic The Hedgehog ~ Mega Drive
Sonic Compilation (Sonic I, Sonic II, & Mean Bean Machine) ~ Mega Drive
6 Pak (USA version of Mega Games 6, containing 6 classic games) ~ Mega Drive

Sonic Jam ~ Saturn

Sega Smash Pack ~ Dreamcast

Sonic Adventure DX (As a hidden extra) ~ GameCube

Sonic Mega Collection ~ PS2 / GameCube / Xbox

I've gotta also say Pac-Man

I know I'm missing some but let me see how many systems I can think of(with atleast one playable version of the original Pac-Man somewhere on it).

-Atari 2600
-NES
-GameBoy
-GameBoy:Color
-GameBoy: Advance
-PSP
-PlayStation
-PlayStation 2
-Xbox
-Gamecube
-Nintendo 64
-Dreamcast

I know there are quite a few I'm missing, but this is just from what I've saw in person(and I'm pretty sure more of the Atari line had Pac-Man games, but I never really owned Atari consoles past the legendary 2600).

I was going to say Space Invaders also, by far Pac Man and the variants of it by along shot. I think Dreamcast may have got'n the last Space Invader variant? Stupid Invaders.

PC diskette 3.5"
PC CD Dos

I would nominate Namco Museum as most ported arcade compilation :D

Lady Jaye
11-21-2005, 04:27 PM
As ports of arcade compilations, I doubt that there's ever going to be as many ports as Namco Museum (to me, Namco 50th Anniversary is Namco Museum with a name change, so I would count it). Not even Atari Anniversary/Anthology has gotten as many ports (although the earliest one goes back to the SNES).

and Pac-Man

Dragon's Lair has a fair number of ports:
...
NES
...
Apple II

If you're going to count those, you might as well throw in the ADAM version as well.

Other good contenders, going by Mobygames:

Rise of the Robots (PC, Game Boy, SNES, Amiga/CD32, Genesis, 3DO, Game Gear, SMS)

Rayman (PC, PSX, GBC, GBA, Saturn, Jaguar)

Popeye (NES, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, C64, ColecoVision, Intellivision, TI-99)

Bomberman/Dyna Blaster (PC, Amiga, Atari ST, TG16, GB, GBC, GBA, DS, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Arcade, Neo Geo, PSX, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, MSX, probably several Japanese computer systems)

Theme Park ~

Mega Drive
Snes
Amiga
PC
CDi
3DO
PlayStation
Saturn
Jaguar
Mega Cd

I think some people are counting sequels and variants on various games. I think we should also exclude PC variants as well, and stick to home consoles.

Rayman I would definitely go for though. Street Fighter II I wouldn't, as there are various remakes (As such) such as SF Turbo etc, which are technically separate games in their own right. Super Street Fighter II for example has an all new line up of characters (Four extra), and thus a separate game in it's own right.

No, the PS2 got various types of Space Invaders - one was the original game with a classic Taito cocktail cabinet style controller, and another was a remake of the original, called Space Invaders: Invasion Day. 2002 saw the release of a GBA version of the game. Most recently, Space Invaders Revolution is coming to the DS.

i think frogger is probably going to win as it was ported to nearly every early platform known to man, it had two different 2600 versions
