View Full Version : Are They Still Making Jaguar Games?

While the Atari Jaguar died long ago, I know some "homebrew" or independent games were being made long after it died. One company I recall that was making them was called Songbird. I wonder if they're still doing that or if everyone's finally called it quits regarding that system? Those games weren't cheap...they normally were about $70 or $75 (or more) as I recall. If they were still making them, I wonder if anyone would ever consider making a baseball game for it? To me, a console isn't complete without a baseball game and the Jag never had one. That may be too difficult for a small company to make even without the major league licenses...I don't know.

I'd buy Brutal Sports Baseball if they made it.

Apparently Songbird has had a release in the last few months.

Since Jaguar is in the public domain now I guess that the future of Jag gaming is up to those who really want one.

Thanks for the link...for anyone who doesn't care to go to the trouble, the new game is a port of the arcade action game Total Carnage...and they're charging $89.95 for it. Now I know they probably need to charge more to make money on a game that's done in limited numbers but I can't really see paying $90 for a game I already have for my Super Nintendo even if this version might be a bit better.

Jag CD homebrew releases are cheaper, but you need to have a CD unit too...

Well, that lets me out. I had the CD unit once but I had so much trouble getting it to work that I sold it and haven't missed it...and am not about to get another one.

The $90 IS a bit more than normal, even for Jaguar homebrews... I think there's either more ROM/whatever in the cart than normal, and/or there's some licensing costs that made it so pricey, but I don't know for sure.

I think it has to do with the license as the game needed to be licensed by midway, which is much harder to make a deal with then a small developper.

Anyone know if this version is complete? I recall seeing an unfinished version at CGE a few years ago, perhaps some of the cost also has to do with getting programmers to finish up the code? As stated, that Midway license also couldn't have been cheap.

Regardless, for Jag collectors, the game is definitely worth it. If you dig Total Carnage and the Jag, it's a no brainer. :)
