View Full Version : which gaming type are you?
Using the style below lets see if we can cover the various types of gamer. I'll start the ball rolling with this first type - 'the pundit'!
Gamer typer:
"the pundit"
normal age:
25+
Most likely to play:
The game currently talked about on the forum
Least likely to play:
The last game talked about on the forum
i know i'm this type of gamer when:
with an hour to spare you choose to log onto gaming sites and forums instead of actually play the games you're talking about.
Characteristics:
the pundit is like many football pundits on telly today. Although he once had the fitness and agility to compete today he likes to take a step back and coment from a general and technical level.
the pundits satisfaction comes from the breadth and depth of his gaming knowledge and he will of course have his speciality subject which will never be a current generation system for fear that it will not set him aside from that most dreaded of other gamer type "the mainstram gamer".
The pundit will always buy multiformat magazines to give him a broad outlook and huis game collection is very rounded with some games genres having been bought simply to 'keep his foot in the water'.
However, these days his satisfaction comes not from playing the games or even his entire gaming collection but instead reading and comenting about them with the same expertise and affection as a museum currator.
The pundit is a likeable guy, he keeps the forums alive with engaging and intelligent debate and while he has a vast knowledge maybe sometimes he would be better to spend just a little time to revisit the 'spirit' of gaming like he used to do many years ago.
is this you? do you know 'a pundit'?, or are you another type of gamer altogether? what type?

Did you get this type from a website or just make it up?
I'll try one in the format you're giving:
Gamer typer:
"the dabbler"
normal age:
25+
Most likely to play:
An emulated ROM
Least likely to play:
An RPG
i know i'm this type of gamer when:
you have a stack of 20 games on your table, to be shelved at the conclusion of a half hour session
Characteristics:
The dabbler fears commitment. He stays away from games that require lengthy set up, any manual or strategy book reading, and specialized controllers.
the dabbler's satisfaction comes from experiencing as many games as possible, even if only for a few minutes.
The dabbler buys very little. He mostly lives on downloaded ROMs and the back catalog of his enormous collection.
However, he will revisit the games he once played at length when he had more disposable time and enthusiasm for gaming.
The dabbler is a consumnate collector. He keeps the forums alive by offering up his opinion on any and every game, no matter how obscure. You would not find him posting in a thread title "I beat Halo 2!", but you would find him in "Anyone else play Krazy Kreatures?"
Did you get this type from a website or just make it up?
no made it up, but there's definatley part of 'the dabbler' in me!
well done. any more?
Wow! What a great topic.
I am a bit embarrassed to say that I am almost certainly "the pundit". Hit the nail on the head, right there!
Poofta!

Gamer type:
"the librarian"
Personal Subtype(s):
Castlevania Fanboy; Treasure Fanboy; The Antisports Gamer
Age:
27
Most likely to play:
Something obscure from the bowels of my collection or the newest Castlevania at the time.
Least likely to play:
 SPORTS GAMES
You know you're this type of gamer when:
You spend more time building, cataloguing, examining and rearranging your collection than playing it. Also enjoys spending time introducing others to obscure gems and subjecting them to version comparisons when games appear on multiple systems. -_-
Characteristics:
Very organized collection that is totally alphabetized and documented. Has two of the best controller to use for any game in their collection just in case. Don't go looking for Madden; it isn't there. Uses crappy PSOne sports games as coasters (literally; I made a set with some green felt and contact cement :rocker:) Occasionally whips out a handheld at inappropriate times during social situations. Also known to get incensed, and may militantly correct a person when they refer to an FPS as a "shooter". :smash:

Gamer Type:
The Packrat
Normal Age:
30+
Most Likely to play:
Something... Someday... when they have the time
Least likely to play:
Something made in the last 10 years
I know i'm this type of gamer when:
You have an obscenely large collection across a vast selection of consoles. You have either have no time, or no desire to play the games you have already accumulated but you seem unable to stop buying more games.
Characteristics/Warning signs:
You have complete or near complete collections of all games released for a system for multiple systems.
Some of your systems you know work only because you have powered them on when you hooked them up years ago.
You do not remember the last game you played or when.
At some point in time you've purchased a large game lot on ebay comprised entirely of games you already own for the sole purpose of aquiring their manuals or spinecards.
You own every minor packaging variation, special editions, US, PAL, and JAP formats for "Game X". You do not like, or have never played "Game X".
You have mistakenly purchased games you already own on multiple occasions. You have purposely purchased games you already own because you want to keep one sealed. More than 50% of your current-gen games are still factory sealed.
Your box of duplicate games weighs more than you do. You grow nervous when your cat or other pet ventures close to your stack of duplicate manuals for fear that it may topple over and crush them.

Awesome topic. Gonna keep a watch on this one. :)
So far I'm most like the Librarian... I'll take a stab at coming up with a gamer-type fairly soon.
Gamer typer:
"Typical G4 viewer"
normal age:
10 - 17
Most likely to play:
Final Fantasy or Grand Theft Auto
Least likely to play:
Anything Adam and Morgan says will give you cancer... barring that most anything actually worthwhile or older than PS2.
Characteristics:
This species can be identified by their "Know your roots" T-Shirts. Interesting to note that less than 5% of which have ever touched an NES let alone played one.
Snarky? Cynical? Perhaps a touch... that whole Filter: Top 10 consoles really rubbed me the wrong way. Thank you for letting me vent a little :)

38+
Most likely to play:

Least likely to play:

The last game talked about on the forum
Whatever you purchased for 30000% of worth because it is sealed
Characteristics:
Traded human interaction for Ebay sniping programs.
Has a good paying job that allows them to fund obsessive compulsive disorder of Sealed game obtainment to thwart early childhood trauma associated with parents unwilling to buy them video games to play.
Is this you? Are you an Embalmer?
