View Full Version : Does anyone here still play old sports titles

I was just wondering if people still did or not. I know a lot of people dont like to even play new sports titles but I found myself playing a lot of Tecmo NBA Basketball on my NES and its been a lot of fun. Just wondering if people do what I do. Plus old sports games are sooo incredibly cheap. I love going to buy games and with my spare change throwing in like 5 sports games just cause they are .25cents each.
Poofta!

well normally id like to have my sports games current, but the two old sports games i find myself playing is Baseball Advance (gba) and Ice Hockey (Nes). NBA JAM TE for genesis is also one of my favs. other than that, i buy a new baseball game every year and get rid of my old one

The old ones are the best. Just fun pick up and play entertainment.
Some of my Favs
NBA Jam its all about Sir Charles' 3 point shots

NFL Blitz old but not that old.

Yep, I still play Triple Play 98, 2000 and 2001 on my PS1.
Sometimes I whip-out Baseball Stars and play a few games.

Heck yeah, I play most of the sports games for the 2600 (except basketball, ick!)
And I'll occasionally get out the Madden games for the Genesis and give them a go. I'm not too much for NES sports games, but a few of the best are Baseball Stars II, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Super Dodge Ball.
Base Wars is pretty sweet, I always just steal a base just for the fighting sequences.
I have yet to find a football game that holds my attention better than Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES.

I also play NBA JAM TE, but on my CDX, I also like to get down on some NFL2k1 on the DC :D
Isen't funny how on the web everyone hates on sports games? yet, a few million are sold every year, and even can be system sellers.

I still play Bad News Baseball religiously. At least 2-3 times a week when I have a few minutes to kill. I also find myself spending time with Tecmo Bowl and NBA Hangtime.

Ah the good old days when baseball video games were actually exciting. I too enjoy a good baseball stars match every now and then.

Every football season when I catch the bug i pull out Madden 92. I still think its the best football game out. Honorable mentions would be NHL 94 (super nes), World Series Baseball, Tecmo Bowl.

I mostly play sports games on the NES and occasionally on the SNES:
Baseball Stars (best baseball game ever)
Tecmo Super Bowl
Ice Hockey
Blades of Steel
Bad News Baseball
Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball
Little League Baseball
Double Dribble
NBA Jam TE
Ken Griffey Jr.'s Baseball
Rogmeister
11-24-2005, 10:24 AM
I also like Ken Griffey Jr.'s Major League Baseball on SNES (the 2nd one I did not like) but the one SNES baseball game I seem to play the most is Super Baseball 2020. It's just a fun time and one of the few games you aren't checking your players' stats after every game. I also like the SNES' NBA Jam and a few others.

Barely a week goes by that I don't play one of the following:
NES:
Tecmo Super Bowl
RBI Baseball
SNES:
Super Baseball Simulator 1.000
Genesis:
Madden Championship Edition
(love doing rematches of the old Super Bowls)
I completely forgot about Ken Griffey Jr. for the snes ... that's probably the best baseball sim type game i ever played. if anybody knows of a more current game that plays like that now .... let me know.

Ken Griffey Jr Baseball on SNES is still my favorite baseball game of all time (i agree with Rog though, the 2nd one in the series sucks...). and NBA Jam TE on SNES is a blast.... those two sports games of mine get more play than any others....

ooo. I forgot Golf, I'm silly for any golf video game. I love Jack Nicklaus Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf (NES) and any Mario Golf Game, but I'll play just about any golf game.

Nice topic ^_^
Oh heck yes, some of those old sports game are the best!
Mutant League Hockey - body parts everywhere :D
Tecmo Super Bowl - this one is PERFECT
Blast Lacrosse - PS1 underrated game
NHL 96 - I have good times with my Dallas Stars team, and creating current players for the team, completing trades, being manager, etc.
NBA Jam T.E. - undeniable fun
Super Dodgeball - YES THIS ONE COUNTS!
And this next one isn't that old, but IS "old" because it has a newer version, Winning Eleven 7....I love this soccer game. Now the menus suck, and changing players can be a bastard here and there, but there is no more realistic gameplay for soccer games than this one!

For sure !! I host gaming nights every know and then where we start the night off with some NHL 95 on the Sega Gen and then move to NHL 2005 on the XboX.

Baseball Stars 2

I was like me too.
Oh I play Tennis 2k2(Dreamcast) as well. Not old but there are much newer tennis games out that I have not (really don't care too right now) played
I still play some of the older NHL SNES titles (94'-96'). Simply because, my Jets are still in there! Nothing like playing a good game of NHL with my cousin.
Jets vs. Nordiques
Just can't get that nowadays.

So many great games already mentioned. Among those I've been known to play every now and again.
Tecmo Super Bowl
Baseball Stars (yes, it is the best baseball game ever)
Dusty Diamond
NHL 94 or 96 (absolutely stacked Penguins teams and the WHALE!)
Mutant League Football / Hockey
Super Baseball 2020
NBA Jam TE
and to add a new one... Coach K College Basketball, possibly the best basketball game I've played. I usually rip it up with Tim Duncan at Wake or Stephon Marbury in his one season at Ga Tech.
Every now and then I'll play the following sports games:
NES:
Ice Hockey
Tecmo NBA Basketball
Baseball Stars
SNES:
NBA Jam TE

I have an obsession with Bases Loaded. It makes me feel as if I’m at the ballpark on a sunny weekend afternoon with a dodger dog and some big league chew. Nostalgic memories of little league games accompany every inning, as the eight bit synthesized umpire calls the pitches to the best of his abilities. The homerun theme is something that should be turned up very loud; one should certainly dance to this.
I still play MLB 99' (PS1) and NFL2k (Dreamcast) from time to time.

I play these every day ....
"NBA HangTime" -- SNES
"Brunswick Tournament Of Champions" -- SNES
"Championship Pool" [unbelievable graphics, sound & physics] -- SNES
Later!

oh how did I miss this topic. x_x
I love old sports games. :) one of my favorite genres. the new sports games while I still play them mostly just football though have gotten to complicated for me.
I love love love Tecmo Super Bowl. I update it every other year with new rosters (check out the tecmo super bowl thead in my sig to learn more). I'd list all the other sports games I love but they have all been mentioned all ready. I think that says something about their longevity and classic status in gaming.
I will say i spent hours upon hours playing Joe Montana Sports Talk Football back in the day but it didn't age well and I don't play it very often today. But most of the games I played when they were new I still play to this day.

Its interesting to see how few licensed games are still played. I play a couple every once in a while:
NBA 2K1 (DC) - The Bucks had Cassell, Robinson and Allen, and I had the best year of my life as a basketball fan that year. Why not play with that team?
MLB Baseball (NES) - It's just sweet, really.

I still play:
Game Gear: Joe Montana's Football
Genesis: NHL '96 (NHL '97 didn't transition well for the Saturn)
NBA Jam (Preferred over the Saturn version which I also own)
Dreamcast: NFL 2K1

true, though Tecmo Super Bowl was the first game to hold both NFL and NFLPA licenses and is still one of the most loved sports games to this day and as a result Bo Jackson will play on forever.
edit: actually looking back over the thread most of the games are licensed

Yeah, I didn't say that right. I mean discount Blitz, NBA Jam, NBA Hangtime and the other "extreme" versions and there isn't that much. Looking through the list like that, and there are VERY few licensed serious (?) sports games still played. I guess the yearly updates really do matter for the most part. And I'm also not counting Tennis, Golf or Bowling games by the way.
Sorry for not clarifying that... at all. :embarrassed:
Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl fall into a grey area with me too, as I see them both as more arcade style and less realistic. AWESOME games though.

its all about 10 yard fight (j)
only interesting footbawl game I ever played.
instead of normal rules you're always on the offensive , the game progresses by levels. and you gain points acordingly to how ell you play

Yeah, definitely, as it's hard to bring yourself to pay top whack for the latest iteration of sports game when you know the previous ones will cost 40% of fuck all..
More specifically, I play a variety of older hockey games, and strangely enough, a lot of 2600 Bowling.
Funnily enough, I still hook up the old 'Pong' console from time to time

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I hope that's ok.
Everything old is new to me again. I'm going really retro lately . I bought a Dreamcast, Genesis 2 and a FC Twin.
"Current" favs are: NHL Hitz 2003 (xbox), NHL 94 (Genesis, SNES and the rom) and Tecmo Super Bowl (Genesis).
I need a great baseball game. My alltime favorite is the Hardball series on C64. Any suggestions would be great.
Are there any good soccer titles for the Genny or SNES?
thanks

I guess I am glad that sports is my favorite gaming genre. 70% of the games I own are sports titles.
The old games are just so cheap and it is a good way to pad your library. I finally got an original XBox this Christmas and liked the idea of getting about 25-30 games for $0.99 at EB Games instead of 1 or 2 "other" games for the same money. So what if I bought consecutive years of a bunch of different series or 3-4 types of basketball games for each given year, by 3-4 different companies?
My sickness prompts me to buy the same game for all of my current consoles. For example, I have NBA 2K2 on Dreamcast, PS2, Game Cube and XBox. If it is sports, I am playing it.
I keep all the old games, even when I get a newer one. Some years a series is better than others. Not all the NHL games for the Sega systems were "happening." Many were inconsistent. Some years the gameplay and physics sucked. Others years it was great. You never seemed to know until you got the game fired up.
That and it is nice to have "memories" of a favorite roster/year for certain teams, which a couple of people have already said. A newer basketball game won't have Antoine Walker on the Boston Celtics and he was my favorite player on the team.

I once had the first Hardball made for the Playstation and the play-by-play was weird as you could hear the pauses as the disc searched for the right name to include in each phrase. I don't recall it being very easy to play. I have a later Hardball for the system (Hardball 99?) I will probably play later. I'm currently playing MVP Baseball 2005, the last edition to feature MLB players and teams. Once I finish this season, I'll switch to my PS1 and probably play some of 3D Baseball (featuring the voice of CNN announcer Earl Van Wright or whatever his name is) and maybe some of MLB Pennant Chase (which morphed into the MLB series the following year). I like the older baseball games...it's a bit nostalgiac playing with guys who used to be on your favorite team...

My fave sport title of all time is the 1st Ken Griffey on SNES. To this day, I still play it to death. I've played like 7 total seasons, 1 with Giants, 1 with A's 5 with the Yankees. That game is f'n brill
I love old sport games. NBA Live 95-98 on SNES is where it's at, and you can't go wrong w/NBA Jam TE (esp. with 4 players)
The EA NHL series on SNES was also addicting. Super Tennis is still very playable. Sport titles from 16 bit era ruled
And don't forget Looney Tunes B-Ball... one of the best underrated 4-player games from the 16-bit era

If you have a Sega Genesis, I'm pretty sure there were at least 4 different Hardball games. The first one is really cheap to buy and it feels a lot like a computer game, instead of a console game. It would probably remind you the most of what you played on C64. If you don't mind that the first game in the series on the Genesis doesn't have real players, it ain't half bad. I think later Hardball games on the Genesis did have real players, though.
As far as quality, it is just my opinion but I'd say the Hardball series on the Genesis falls a little short of the RBI Baseball and World Series Baseball games but it is better than the Tony LaRussa/EA games or the baseball games for Cal Ripken and Roger Clemens. Middle of the road.........

I play NHL 94 on my Sega cd likes it going out of style ;). Actually, just today I completed a kicka$$ best of 7 playoff series in NHL 94. My (then) expansion Mighty Ducks beat the heavily favored red wings in 6 games. Now I am taking on the Maple Leafs in the second round. They are up 1 game to none so far. This is a game that still gets me going and getting excited as hell. If you have a sega cd and like hockey then you have to get this game. The sounds are incredible.I also enjoy playing Tecmo football on nintnedo and NFL 94 on genesis. If I had baseball stars for nintendo I would play the hell out of it too.
