Exactly how many are there? I've heard 772 most commonly, followed by 774, and even one time it was as high as 800.

How many would a person need to have a complete US NES collection?

After counting up the entries in the DP Guide, it appears that there are 772 US NES games. So you're right.

depends if you count test-carts, unlicensed games (example: Tengen, Camerica, AVE...), etc.

Unlicensed games count, because they were mass produced in the US. Test carts, however, do not count.

I want to count whatever would be considered a complete NES Collection, count tengen, camerica, AVE, and all the rest. Is it 772?

Is it 772?

That would be correct.

I've always gone with 774. That includes NWC 1990, which was never sold in stores. Additionally, you can get picky about what constitutes a unique game. I don't count label variations or multiple versions of a release, but others do.

As I understand it, Myriad 6-in-1 is literally a Caltron cart with a new label slapped on top (some might count that as a label variation, and therefore as one game rather than two). There are licensed and unlicensed versions of Tengen Pacman, RBI Baseball, and Gauntlet. You can count them as 3 or 6, since the games are identical otherwise. There's also the re-releases of Zelda, Metroid, Blades of Steel, etc. (I have them, but don't count them among the 774). And then there's the Sachen question, which has been debated here before. They are not part of 774.

774 comes from Mike Etler's rarity list. Add NWC 1990, then remove the two prototypes, the Euro-only game (Asterix), and four non-games. The grand total could be 775 if you count NWC 1990 twice... one gold, one gray. DP experts can correct me, but I believe the DP Guide used Etler's list as a starting point. Since Mike's list hasn't been updated in years, I'd trust DP to have the most recent and accurate totals and titles.

Earlier this year, I counted 770 in my collection, only wanting the three Panesians and an NWC 1990.

The NWC carts are not.... Thats right, not needed to have a complete U.S. collection ;) (but are very nice to have)

And then the whole argument begins about Sachen carts, and whether or not they consitute part of the library. In my mind, they don't, but some people think they do.

i dont count scahens either, as there seems some question as to whether they actually got a US release anyway...theyre in the guide, but threads on this site haven't confirmed their US releases. should be a subsection like lightspans to PS1 in my opinion.

OT: anyone looking for game room shots, the links below...i dont really have that much stuff compared to the heavy hitters, you just have to figure how many systems had less than (or close to)100 released games. i need 150 each for snes and genesis, and 37 for nes, but otherwise my numbers arent that remarkable.

After a little investigating, I discovered why my 774 list differs from the DP 772 list. I counted the unlicensed & licensed versions of RBI Baseball, Gauntlet, and Pac-Man. DP only counts each of those three once. Also, I didn't have both versions of Maxi-15.
