View Full Version : Have you ever unfairly judged a console?

I have. For 6 yrs I've felt my Dreamcast was rather boring. It wasn't until sometime earlier this week that I realized that the only reason I haven't been enjoying it is because I've kept it in the shadow of the Saturn. Back in 99 when it originally launched I was expecting it to be a more powerful version of the Saturn and it wasn't. I was also expecting backwards compatability and it didn't have that either, but that's really a null issue.

The past week or two I've been looking around on the net and finding some really good games for it and I've finally realized it's no a bad console at all and that I've been missing out on alot! The only real complaint I can have is there's no Nights into Dreams 2, but that's probably never going to happen on any system, and one game isn't a real reason to condemn a console.

So have you ever misjudged a console? Did you see the light?

EDIT:
Maybe this should have been in the classic forum, not sure.

I was a culprit of this with the XBox. It was the last of the 3 current gen systems I bought, and now it is actually my favorite of the three. It generally has the best graphics, and I love the Controller S for 3D gaming. I guess it all comes down to whether you like Halo or not. I hadn't given it a chance, but now I'm hooked.

I've unfairly judged the Xbox. I always thought the Xbox was crap and didn't buy one until early this year. Mainly, I thought its library was full of boring FPS's and sports titles...when in fact there are quite a few great games.

Oh yes, I did it with the N64 and I still do it!! At first I was amazed by the new Mario and Zelda game (well, I was influenced by the game mags and stuff) but after some playing they have lost their charm for me. I'm not really into 3D games when it come to jump'n'runs and action RGPs. I love my old-school games way to much to appreciate the new way of the N64 games. I'm not saying that the N64 is a bad console, I was just disappointed by it and can't stand to play it anymore. Even when I know it's stupid...

Funny thing is that tere are indeed platformers or action games in 3d that I like, Ratched and Clank for example. But still, I can't appreciate what the N64 offers me and I doubt I will ever buy this console again, no matter how cheap it is used.

I disliked the PS2 for it's empty hype that killed off the Dreamcast. And the first games we're pretty crappy, or prettier sequels to PSOne games...

Once ICO, Suikoden III, and Silent Hill 3 came out I started to enjoy it. I really like the PS2 now, and probably play it more than Xbox and Cube. I don't believe the PS3 hype though. Fool me once... :P

Yup,
I had a VERY hard time liking the PlayStation when it came out. I wasnt a fan of waiting that long to get to play my games, and for some reason I didnt like the fact that there was like 800 buttons on the PS controller. I stuck to my Genny/NES and got a N64 over the PS when I had the choice. I didnt even play one until 99. Heh, but look at me now and you'd never know.

Normally I’m pretty right about my first impressions of a gaming system. I can say though that I am wrong from time to time.

Playstation- I was not interested in this console at all. I ignored the launch but later (after the miserable failure that was the N64) fell in love with it and bought one. O this day it’s one of my favorites.

N64- I was foaming at the mouth to get one of these and when I did finally get one (3 days before launch, thanks K-Mart!)…utter disappointment, it went back to the store in less than a week. I bought another in ’99 and still dislike it to this day. I only have it to complete my Nintendo collection (that and Paper Mario).

Dreamcast- I have always disliked this console, I bough one when it hit $99 and never got into it. I sold it a few months ago. Call me crazy but that’s how it goes, it had so much promise with so little delivery.

PS2- I lost sleep thinking about picking one of these up on launch day. When I did….it was the N64 all over again, it went back to the store the next week. Not impressed. I have borrowed my buddy’s from time to time (final Fantasy X was a must play) but to this say I still don’t have one. If Sony ever gets their head out of their ass and lowers the price to $99, I’ll pick one up.

Xbox- I was always lukewarm about this system and when I got one for Christmas last year (fathom that, 28 and still getting game systems for Christams), I realized why. I don’t like FPS nor do I have a need to go online. I rented some of the “premier” titles for the unit and played them all. When I found I was most excited about Metal Slug 3, I sold the unit and got a Neo geo. I’ve been happy ever since.

Gamecube- I completely passed this console up on launch and although I have one now (B-day gift), I really don’t play it all that much. Titles like Windwaker, the Midway Arcade Classics titles and Paper Mario are the only reasons why I still play it form time to time.

Sega CD- For years this system got little to no play in my house. The better titles were to expensive so the only ones I had sucked. I decided to finally download some romz and burn them….games like Snatcher, final Fight, Vay, the Lunar titles, Lords of Thunder and Shining Force CD make it worth while.

I was very wrong about the Nintendo DS. When it was announced, I thought it looked like the thing that was going to be the end of Nintendo - finally kill thier handheld gaming dominance. Now the psp is struggling and I spent all last night playing mario kart :)

I am a Basher of XBOX and XBOX360 Just because of the company that makes them. But that does not mean I am not willing to Try them, and I may end up buying a used XBOX.

As a child, I had an NES. And when Sega came out of nowhere with the Genesis (Because back then most Nintendo players never even heard about the Master System let alone even a lot of non-NES players.), I had a very strong hatred for them even though I had never touched a Genesis or really watched one in progress. (Hell, I couldn't even tell the graphics were really better.) All I wanted to do was hate Sega because they would constantly bash Nintendo with their "Nintendon't" campaign. Took me years to finally play a Genesis (Towards the end of the SNES/Genesis era.) when I realized it wasn't all that bad. But it wasn't all that good either until I finally got one myself.

When the PlayStation came on the scene and was challenging my beloved N64, the same thing happened. Never played or saw one. Hated them for the same reasons. I ended up totally turning my hatred around at Christmastime 1998 when I was at a friends house who had one (The first time I ever saw one in person aside from mall kiosks.) when they rented some games. Crash Bandicoot being one of them. It was then I saw Crash in person and set aside my hatred for his mean infamous "Megaphone" commercials and played the game. My PSX hatred ended there. A few weeks later in early 1999 I bought one for myself as well as the two (3) games I will never sell for the PSX, Bubble Bobble (The closest you can get to an arcade cabinet) and Final Fantasy Anthology (FFV and VI which I am currently playing through finally.) I did end up trading the PSX in a couple years later to buy a Cube, but bought it back again in 2003 so it's not all bad.

Same with the Xbox when it came out. It took Halo (I got sucked in by the Halo effect) to convince me to want one.

And the same with the PS2. Took Katamari Damacy to turn me there.

Oh, duh, and the PSP. I hated that for months prior to its release solely because it was going against my beloved DS and I firmly believed Sony had no right stepping foot in Nintendo's territory. Well, we all know this story, it took a video of Lumines in action the night before the launch and two days later I went blank. When I awoke, I was playing Lumines on my own PSP and was $300 poorer.

At this point I have finally realized that it's not the console. It's the games. And if the console has a game I want, I will stop hating it (If I was hating it) and I will buy it for that game. Hopefully my hatred for any console is gone now. I don't plan on getting a PS3, but if one game I want, I mean really really want, comes out for it, I will eventually own one. So yeah. It's the games.

PSP. Sony hype is bullshit, and it made me want to see the PSP crash and burn. But hell, the thing is slick. I own one now, and although it ain't wonderful, it's a decent machine.

Dreamcast. Bought into the PS2 hype and dismissed the Dreamcast as crap. Finally bought one in '04 and have been pretty much hooked ever since. Multiplayer wise (as in get 4 people in the same room, not this online stuff) it can't be beat, and there are plenty of single player classics as well.

PS2. Thought it was going to be the best thing ever, preordered one with Smuggler's Run. What a waste. If I knew what eBay was at the time, you could bet that it would've gone on there. In '05 it's great, but at launch the thing was crap.

The PS2. Considering the fact the PS1 was crap, aside from a few gems (Crash Bandicoot, Spyro...maybe a few others), I didn't have much hope for the PS2. Crappy controller, weak system, long load times, breaks easily? Check.

The PS2 has slowly been rising from crap to good in my opinion, however, thanks to these series: Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Katamari Damacy, ICO, Shadow of Colossus and God of War. I'm not including GTA since it's available on the PC and Xbox (much better versions, at that). So, my PS2 has gradually been getting more play time. I must say, however, one last time...THE PS2 CONTROLLER SUCKS MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF ASS.

That's your opinion, and that's fine, but I liked the PS2 controller more than any other since the SNES one ;) Everybody will see/feel it differently.

Incidentally, per my experience ..

SMS : Didn't like this pad much, always hard to avoid hitting the diagonals ..
NES : Classic and responsive, but the hard edges kinda wear on your hadns ..
SNES : Outstanding in all respects
Genesis : A little mushy, but a huge improvement over the SMS one.
TG-16 : Excellent! Seemed to me like the original NES pad taken to perfection.
Saturn : Button placement a little tricky, but I got along fine with it.
PS1 : I really really liked it, jumped right into Battle Arena Toshinden, Tekken, etc .. sharp and precise.
N64 : I really wanted to like it, but the analog stick was always awkward for me.
Dreamcast : Took some getting used to, I grew to like it though, and Soul Caliber really put it to the test ;)
PS2 : Improvement over the PS1, fun for stuff like GT, etc.
Xbox : Augh. Seemed like a mutant version of the DC controller to me, I probably would have gotten used to it, but I dumped the box within weeks, so never had the chance.

And those are just my opinions, I fully expect that no one else in the entire world would feel the exact same way.

Your personal opinion that the PS2 controller is crap is absolutely justifiable from your personal experience, but it doesn't make it so for anyone else.

While I agree the PS2 controller sucks ass and the PS3 controller looks like it's gonna be worse, I must say I've been getting used to it, well almost used to it recently since I've been mainly addicted to PS2 games lately. (Dragon Quest demo, Final Fantasy VI, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus) But I'll take the Cube controller followed by the Xbox BIG controller any day.

Sorry, let's be careful or this'll turn into a controller debate.

You know, I attribute the Dreamcast's ad campaign in the weeks leading up to the launch to be the reason I really really lost my zealotry. I had a PSX at that time, but I wasn't fully turned. The DC commercials were witty and humorous at some times and it made me realize they're all just consoles. Just consoles that play games. Not some religious figure where only one is the real true console. They're all consoles that do things as well as the others. Love them all equally.

Never unfairly. Any of my judging has been based on something I've actually experianced. If I dont know anything about a console, I dont bash it, but if I flat out dont like it and think its lame based on the experiances, then I bash it for good reason. (cough Xbox cough)

Always hated the PlyStation for some reason, I've played it, and some good games for it too, but still didn't like it. Finally bought one over the summer, and to me it was kinda a waste of money. BUT, I've yet to buy much for it, so my opinion means nothing much right now, Ofcourse, I never really though the N64 was great(pretty good not great), and I've yet to play a Saturn(but I'm looking for one). Now I'm not biased against companies, dispite to fact I will still buy Nintendo systems first(always have, always will).

Let's hope that it's the last time

Anyways... like alot of people, I wasn't really interested in the Xbox for years. Finally picked one up for my dad (Big FPS and War game fan) and i've found a good amount of titles to play when I get a chance.

That's about as far as i've gone, I don't think i've ever disliked a system or had an opinion on it without playing for awhile.

Only recently have I been wrong about a couple consoles and one portable system.

I was completely wrong about the DS and now want one more than a 360- BY FAR

For MANY YEARS I was critical of the PS2 even though Ive had one since the year it launched I was always saying this is NO BETTER THAN THE DREAMCAST I LUV MY DREAMCAST DAMMIT!

It was a love/hate thing with my PS2 up until the last couple years I luved the games but hated the system for so many reasons (hell ive bought 3 NEW ones  )

The first being that everyone AND I MEAN EVERYONE treated the Playstation 2 like the freaking second coming casuals,GAMERS, Developers and publishers all flocked to it like it was a godsend and I resented it for that mostly becuase I thought the DREAMCAST was a godsend and the greatest thing to happen to gaming since the glory days of the Genesis/SNES.

Now after all these years I actually cant imagine gaming without a Playstation 2.

I cannot fathom how any gamer could deprive themselves of SO MANY GREAT GAMES from both the PSone/PS2 era just for simple hatred of Sony or the name Playstation.

Also any system that can play my complete Silent Hill collection on plus games like RE4/God of War/Ico and so many more is a DAMN GOOD SYSTEM in my book.

Reaching back years and years for this one.

I remember when i forst got my NES (1990) and i just didnt care for the Genesis or Sega at all. I loved my Nintedo and that was that.

Fast forward to mid to late-1992 & owning the system for about 2 years and the realization that the NES was on its way out let me to think twice about my eariler feelings.

I own 27 systems and still have no desire to own an Xbox. A part of me wants to TRY and like it and give it a chance. However, I don't like FPS's and don't care about gaming online so what other exclusive titles would grab my interest? The only ones i may be interested in are Jet Set Radio Future, PD Orta, and HotD 3 (but I heard it sucks). Anyways, other than the Xbox, I've never prejudged a system and I have always been pleased with the results....except for the N64 :)

Xbox also has some very well done racing, sports, and fighting titles, if you're into those. If not, it's not critical that you grab one. Of course, you'll probably see $50 used Xboxes by spring. Here in Dallas, I see $75 and sometimes cheaper ones all the time, often with games included.

I'm guilty of pretty much the same thing. I balked at the Xbox before, during and after its launch. The idea of a hard drive in a console almost disgusted me, but as time went on, I started to warm up to it and finally baught one when Panzer Dragoon Orta came out for it. Then Xbox Live hit, and suddenly, the Xbox became my favorite console of the current generation. I have twice as many Xbox games as I do PS2 and GC games.
I realized the Xbox had a lot to offer like; custom soundtracks, Xbox Live, HDTV support, downloadable content, etc.

I was real hard on the PS1 when it came out. I felt that Sony had no idea what real gamers wanted and had no business trying to muscle into the console wars, and that they were a lot of hype and poor-quality games.

Well, I reluctantly bought a PS1 just so I could get FF7, and after I did get one, I learned to like just about everything about it. And now I actually spend more time playing my PS2 than my Gamecube, so go figure.

I like most systems now.

"I don't like FPS's and don't care about gaming online so what other exclusive titles would grab my interest? "

Forza Motorsport, Outrun 2, Project Gotham Racing 2, and RalliSport Challenge 2 all come to mind for starters. There's a lot more to the Xbox then just first person shooters, and there's a lot of exclusives for the system outside of just racing games. But racing games and classic gaming occupy most of my time on consoles so that's what I know.

I defintely overlooked the TG16. I got one a while back, and got a handful of games - just for my quest to own every console ever made. ;-)

However, I recently picked up Galaga '90:

simple here, only one system I have never really liked
and that is the NES, i was/will always prefer the SMS over
the nes.

I have had a nes since launch and probably own around 50 to
60 games, with the marios, metal gear and Bionic Comando being
the only games I really enjoyed.
The Sms on the other hand, I have around 200 games and
can list lots and lots that I have got countless hours out of,
but hey everyones different I suppose. :/ 8-)

Now and then I get the feeling that the SMS wasn't too good. Then I remember: Aleste, Wonder Boy III, Phantasy Star, Golvellius...the system does reasonably well with classic shooters (I believe all I've got right now is Sagaia), and it's the 2D sidescroller genre that I feel isn't represented very well. Rastan? Ugh, I can't really stand to look at that port, especially when I've got the Apple IIgs version lying about. Shinobi is okay, but only barely. Shadow Dancer is great to look at, but I feel that's a bit too loose for its own good. The system definitely deserves praise, though.

I'm pretty spiteful towards the Sega CD. Every game I own for it is a complete waste. The Mega CD, on the other hand, has some great titles. Well, it's got the awesome Ninjawarriors port, anyway.

I don't know if I ever can say that I've unfairly judged a console. Perhaps the N64, which I bought because I was so excited to get Earthbound 64, and we all know how that turned out. So, I bought it expecting to like it, and it ended up being the only console that I really feel like I wasted money on.

Having said that, GoldenEye gave me so many hours of fun (and like four other games) that I can't complain too much. But the fact I only truly like about 5 games for it makes it hard for me to truly like it.

Other than that, I feel like I've been pretty right about the other consoles I've had -- the ones I've bought I've really enjoyed, and the ones that I haven't when I have played them, I haven't felt like there was any surprises that I was missing.

I don't think i've ever unfairly judged a systems library. I was in denial for 2 years that the Genesis fucking rocked. I was so into Nintendo that I actually would lie to myself about the Genesis.

"Nintendo rules so Genesis must suck"

Deep down inside I wanted a Genesis and in 91 I broke down. Best break down of my life!

Why pick games that have had PC ports (or started out on the PC)? Plenty of good games on the machine, though, I'll say...and to be honest, those aren't my favorites (can't comment on Fable, as I've not played it).
