View Full Version : The anti-fanboy, the lifelong nemesis of the fanboy

You know, I’ve noticed with all of this MS 360 stuff going on that there has emerged another character in the annoying online world.

The anti-fanboy

Yep, this is the evil, exact opposite of the already hated fanboy. If you have a Microsoft fanboy, there will be his exact opposite. He will blindly despise everything Microsoft does as much and as strongly as the fanboy blindly loves them. I love seeing these two face off, its pure gold.

This is nothing new, but rather an age old practice, especially with Microsoft. Just go ask Kamino or any other diehard linux users.

For as long as there have been fanboys there have been the Haters. There are a couple of people on here who hate Sony but have no real allegience in the console world.

The same carries over into the world of music and Cars. Some people hate rap but don't specifically love one other genre. Some people absolutely hate Ford, but none of the others. Hell this week i bet a lot of people are hating GM.

It's nothing new but it is just as serious a problem as the Fanboy crisis.

And you're absolutely right when the 2 face off it's the nattle of pure bullshit. You can't help but stand on the sidelines watching them tear each other apart.

Why the Fanboy hate? I'm really quite nifty.

And how about those of us who stand the middle ground, who aren't fanboys nor anti-fanboys?

LOL- ok that was funny.

The best part about fanboys and anti-fanboys is when they seem to think that their favorite console company actually cares about them, and they act like you are insulting their mommy when they hear you say anything negative about their beloved toy. Or, just as bad, they hear you say something positive about the console they hate, and they make it a personal crusade to slam the console, especially when it has no place in the thread. I have been called a "fag" several times for stating that while I thought Halo was fun, and do own a copy, I thought it was overrated.

The new generation seems to be bringing out fanboys and anti-fanboys that are even more annoying than this past one, and the bullshit is already flying high.

Remember, the PS3 is actually going to cost $600, the Xbox 360 is going to be the death of MS, Nintendo Revolution is not going to sell and the controller is going to be gay, the power of Halo is going to halt the PS3 launch, Nintendo is going to go the way of Sega, PS3 is twice as powerful as the 360, Halo is going to halt the launch of the PS3, etc. etc. etc.

Well if you are like me, you end up with all the current gen consoles and are a much happier person.

Then you’re considered normal like many of us here.

I lived and played heavily in the Genesis-vs-SNES era and can say it wasn’t as annoying as it is today. The new level of fanboy is so extreme lately, as if by saying something against a console you’re smearing the name of their mother. Xbox and Sony fans are insane lately. The Nintendo fanboys don’t have much of a leg to stand on, thus the lack of major Gamecube shit-talking. As long as the games are good, I don’t care what system I’m playing on.

I will admit that I am still partial to the NES and SNES over the master System and Genesis though…I guess it’s just in my blood. On the flip side though I don’t hammer Genesis fans for liking what they like.

Yeah I think the key to all of it is maturity and respect. Of course we're all going to have different opinions about things.

I think it's perfectly fine to disagree about anything and everything, as long as people don't start insulting one another just because they have their preferences.

I can give many personal reasons as to why I'm not a Microsoft or Xbox fan, though I have owned one (same with PS2).

At the same time, I would never begrudge anyone for loving theirs and having a blast.

After all, we play games because it's fun, right? If we lose sight of that, what's the point?

Exactly. As long as your decent, intellegent and willing to admit when you're wrong, then everything is peachy.

Very true. It really helps when people can understand subjectivity vs. objectivity. Arguing about certain things, like what genre is best, or which controller is best, is akin to arguing about what is the best flavor of ice cream. That's why it's so important for proper clarification of opinions, because it's so ignorant to make blanket statements that do_not_jibe with everyone else. Helps keep things from degenerating into hopeless fanboy cussfests.

If I said "The PS2 controller sucks ass", I would be an absolute moron.

If I said "I think the PS2 controller sucks ass", that would be perfectly acceptable.

It's the difference between making a blanket statement, and stating a personal observation or opinion.

Of course, there are the types of people who just want to annoy the crap out of everyone else at any price, or to blindly push a particular opinion.

Man, I remember the 16 bit era. That was a classic fanboy time. Right now, it is all just internet folks arguing over each other about consoles, but back then, the companies fueled fanboyism. Remember "Sega does what Nintendon't". Or Nintendo's parading around how Comanche was going to be superior to any 3D game on the 3DO? Man, that was awesome. Of course, I look back at those silly times as a kid, and realize that it was pretty stupid. The Genesis had some great qualities, incuding the ultimate hockey game, NHL 94. I probably would never be convinced that the Genesis is superior to the snes, as there just aren't as many classic gems like the Final Fantasys and Super Mario series, but people that have a different genre interest may like the Genesis better.

Fanboyism takes far too much energy.

They all have great points and they all have shortcomings. it's easy to get bored with any system after a time, so I tend to get rid of all systems equally.

You're those were the days. It wasn't so much fanboyism as gang warfare. Looking back today's disputes seem almost trival compared to the high points of the Sega Nintendo War.

That's because back then there was no internet, and people who disagreed with your opinions had to say so to your face.

My love goes out to ALL of my consoles... HOWEVER, no PSP will reach my hands... Why? No, not cause of hate, but because of $$$.

I dont favour any one console over the other, bashing it and whatnot. They each have their features, their own games, their own pro's and con's.

It's not a crisis when it's the same ol' stuff day in and day out :D

If this were a crisis, rabid Xbox devotees would be raiding game stores and slashing up all the cases for PS2 games, or something of the sort.

Gaming arguments are ok in my book. It’s perfectly ok to not agree with somebody but when you’re an ass about it and are completely closed minded, you step into the realm of the fanboy.

I was a Nintendo fanboy, making fun of everything on the Genesis and spouting off “Super Nintento rulz boyeeeee!!!”….then I grew up. I was in 8th grade at the time. I know of married men (and women) tat come on sites like this and act like it’s Jr. High all over again. I find it completely annoying.

You want to see rampant fanboy-ism? Check out this site:

http://www.onthespotgames.com/forums/index.php

It’s a bunch of grown men humping each other and constantly talking about the Xbox and 360. Just look at the post counts for all the other forums. I’ve been there since the beginning of the site and tried to get other topics started….but it never works.
