Semi-functional Mega CD (JAP) Model 1

I have a model 1 Japanese Mega CD Unit. It works some of the times but not often. I have tried to clean it with compressed air and still doesn't work. Do I need to clean the lens itself or just replace the darn thing?

Would like to get it working to play my japanese mega cd games.

It would help if you can explain what doesn't "work" as it'd give us a better idea where the problem may lay.

Do you keep it always connected to the megadrive, or do you disconnect it and reconnect it often?

I've got a number of model2 CD's, that I cna't get to work. I'm toying with hard wiring one of them to a genny to insure a good connection. It will sacrifice a CD unit, but maybe....
