I couldn't find anything here mentioning this, so here goes:

Do any of you know the band The Advantage? As you can guess by their name, they have made a record entirely of classic NES tunes! Guitar, bass and drums, sounds very garage rock to me, in a good way. 26 instrumental tracks.

Check it out at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001LYFA4/qid=1133119729/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-0022780-0952951?v=glance&s=musicurl)

Mega Man 2, Zelda, Super Mario 2, Bionic Commando, Blaster Master (a particular treat), Contra Snow level (kickass as well!), Ghosts and Goblins, etc. Fun stuff! Apparently they're working a second record.

God damn right I know about The Advantage. That CD came out last year, a new one is already finished and is coming out in a couple months or so. I've heard some of the newer songs they are amazing. Guardian Legend is one of the best tracks I've heard from it.

I also have 3 other albums that they made under a different name "genereic". All Nintendo songs too.

Here's a list of songs I've heard them cover:

wizards and warriors intro
double dragon 3 egypt level
goonies 2
marble madness race 2
bomberman
castlevania 2 bloody tears
bubble bobble
duck tales moon level
mega man 2 bubbleman
mega man 2 wily stage 1
castlevania stage 1
castlevania stage 3
contra snowfields
castlevania 3 epitaph
castlevania 3 evergreen
ghosts and goblins
mario 2
megaman flashman
megaman dr wily
metroid kraid
metroid norfair
zelda fortress
bomberman 2 wiggy
guardian legend
guardian legend corridor 1
wizards and warriors tree trunk
blaster master
batman
batman 2 return of the joker
ninja gaiden
air fortress
metal gear jungle
ninja gaiden 2
karnov
final fantasy 3
mario 3
bionic commando POW camp
contra boss music
double dragon 2 stage 2
double dragon 2 boss and story music

Theres all that I've heard but I'm sure there is alot more, the new album was apparently leaked but I still can;t find it, definitely plan on buying it though.

All these songs listed span across 5 different releases. Two EP's under the name "generic" The Self Titled which was mentioned. A "tour ep". And the newest cd that is still unreleased.

Even when they were Generic they were just as good if not better than The Advantage, the only difference was a different guitar player.

Yeah I listen to them too. Good stuff. Don't listen to it all the time but it's fun once in a while. They are really talented.

Never heard of 'em. For some reason, I can't access their website, and I haven't heard any thing about them on the web, which kinda sucks :(

Also, there is another band that's still starting, called, I think, the "Petit Project", and they vhave a song called "99 lives" which features many video-game referances, including a slight remix of the "world 1-2/4-2" mario music :D

You cant access the site, cause the topic creator accidently messed up the URL. If you click it, itll take you to http://www.theadvantageband.comurl/, just delete the url/ at the end, and it works ;)

I like this band. However I like Game Over even more and I'm still waiting for their 2nd CD.

I post over at the minibosses forums there are alot of remixers/cover artists that are pretty amazing.

There was this guy who covered the entire super mario world soundtrack using like 32 differnet live insturments, one of the most amazing things I;ve ever heard.

Sorry, the link is fixed now. I'll have to check out Game Over. I can't imagine there's a huge audience for this stuff, so it's cool that they want to do it.

This isn't video game music, but didn't the Ataris have a song called "Up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-B-A-start"?

i was listening to The Advantage at work last week and two customers asked who they were and another guy wanted to buy the cd. i asked if he listened to any of the other Nintendo bands and he looked at me like i was crazy. i then showed him the track listing and told him that all the songs were covers of classic Nintendo tunes. he had no idea and said he just thought the guitar sound was awesome

the Neskimos are also really good

Their new album, 'Elf Entitled' is pretty awesome. Especially the whole Mega Man section on the CD.

And for the record, The Advantage rocks pretty hardcore.

the thing with the advantage is most (all?) of the dudes in the band are all from super respected and relatively popular indie rock bands. their records all come out on a good record label with great band mates. plus, seeing them live? insane. super talented dudes.

minibosses, not into it. haven't bothered with any of the others.

It's been pushed back to January, because it was leaked on the Internet (I don't know why this would cause it to be pushed back, but that's the reason).

I like The Advantage for music that tries to sound closely like the originals.

For remixes, Neskimos and Game Over are incredible. I think it was the Neskimos that has a mindblowing Bionic Commando medley.

There was another band from South America that I can't remember the name of who are also incredible...damn...wish I could remember...

Yeah, I purchased the Advantage CD when it was first mentioned here last year. :)

Glad to hear they have a new one coming out soon -- let us know when it does and I'll buy it.

I DO like most of the music on the CD. They covered obscure songs (Bomberman 2? :eek 2: ) as well as some of the most famous ones ('Wicked Child' from Castlevania, SMB 2, Zelda). But there's some problems with some of the songs -- SMB 2 has a amp that is WAY too high and you hear it in parts of the song, and other small difficulties that force me to grade the band a little lower then I would.

I never heard of Game Over -- anyone got a link to where they sell their CD at?

As for Minibosses, I've, uh, never known they had a CD for sale. :embarrassed: I've had their music downloaded for a long time, but I'd buy a CD. Where do they sell their music at?

Close but that's not the reason. The reason why it was pushed back is because they lost the album artwork. This is directly from Robby the guitarist.

They had released a few CDs in the past but most are sold out.

at www.minibosses.com there should be a split and a live EP for sale.

well, it's the worst on purpose. if you were familiar with the bands those dudes are in, and the label they are on and whatnot it would make more sense.

Most of the songs they covered I didn't really like, but I do love their Ninja Gaiden "Mine level". Best NG song ever!

OK, I was just interpreting the message on their website, "lost in the Internet".

I just have to say that that is one of the ugliest and tackiest looking sites that I have ever seen out of myspace accounts. Hard to see things with all the extra clutter there.

As somebody else has said, it's probably intentional, using such blocky Atari-like graphics.

Anyway, I forgot to mention that Mr. Bungle used to cover the Super Mario theme; I have a live bootleg of a January 2001 gig and they did that and the underground theme.
