Does anyone know who/what Cassarin is?

Hey,

There's something that's been bothering me for a while... looking through the Mario's Tennis ROM (for Virtual Boy) there's some text near the end, it lists the characters at the character select screen (in the same order as on the screen).

Anyway, the list goes like this: MARIO LUIGI PRINCESS YOSHI TOAD KOOPA DONKEY CASSARIN . There's 8 names there, but only 7 characters at the select screen of the game. I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone knows who/what Cassarin is, and why (s)he/it would be in Mario's Tennis.

I also don't know if this has anything to do with it, but all of the other characters are exactly as shown (caps and no spaces), and the last is DONKEY Jr. In the ROM, there are several spaces between DONKEY and CASSARIN, like it's a completely different character, but does CASSARIN maybe mean junior in Japanese or something? The US and Jap ROMs are the same. Or is Cassarin a Japanese Nintendo character that they decided to pull out because they the US people wouldn't know who it is?

I'm just trying to solve this mystery, and I figured if anyone's gonna know something strange about video games, it'll be the people on the forum :) .

Interesting stuff though. Maybe its the reminence of some sort of character that we were never supposed to see.

Yeah, it's not really code... there's a TON of code, and then near the end, there's that list (in ascii text). I'm thinking about trying to hack the ROM to allow me to select a player 8, or look for graphics of an unknown character, but I was just wondering if it was worth looking into, or if it was just something stupid.

For some reason the name sounds very familiar, but I dunno why.

I just spent a few minutes searching google for cassarin and anything vb/nintendo related and I came up with nothing. It would be cool though if it turned out to be a long lost Nintendo character than never came to be.

Yeah, it's strange... I couldn't find anything on it... but I did a quick run in the emulator and viewed the BGMap, and the name is there... I didn't see any character graphics for it, but I also didn't see the graphics for all of the other characters. Here's a screenshot:

BTW, viewing the BGMap means it was actually copied out of ROM and into the memory. I also believe that this was pulled from a different place than the list that I saw, since I modified it to COSSORIN, and it was still in the BGMap as CASSARIN, and also notice that it says DONKEY Jr., and not just DONKEY.

HAHAHAHAH!!! I never thought of that... you may be right! I'll have to email one of my Japanese friends and see if he knows a Japanese character Catherine (or Cassarin :P ).
