This is one of my favorite games that I haven't beaten in awhile so I decided to go through it on an emulator instead of my cart. I play through the entire game and get to the end to find out it can't be finished on the rom. When you start the last boss battle your player's life quickly drains and you die within seconds. I tried the Japanese version (Dragon Slayer 4) and loaded the save state and I get the same problem. Does anyone know of this problem and why it happens? If I would have known this ahead of time I would have just played through it on the cart.

It works fine via FCE Ultra, the final battle and all.
Off-topic: I made my own LotW Hack: The Super Easy version. Just grab the DragonSlayer, equip it, and follow the path right to the dragon :)

It's a pretty common problem, from what I've heard. I played through the game myself not long ago (on an NES), and since I wasn't crazy enough to do it completely on my own, I checked several FAQs on the game and they all mentioned the emulation problem.

Yep, used to have the same problem.
This game used to facinate me as a kid...I never beat it without cheats until I was an adult because I just didn't get how to do it. The incredible difficulty (a learning curve, really, in the day before gamefaqs.com) and the massive map (I had no clue of the actual size as a kid) kept me coming back, though I had no clue how to progress.
Much like the mythical atmosphere, beating this game was a myth to me....it made me like it all the more. And that incredible music...

I'll have to try it on a different emulator like FCE to see if it works. Otherwise I'll just get the password for my game and enter it into my cart and finish it.
DDCecil, I would like to see your hack of this game.
I remember playing this game as a kid as well. I never finished it without cheats until I was adult as well due to the extreme difficulty. I just love an enormous underground maze to explore with all the crazy secrets, plus the music is awesome.

By Yuzo Koshiro! He used to write music for Falcom. He wrote all those great tracks on Y's I and II.
Coincidentally, I've been playing the NES cart lately, trying not to cheat at all. Getting Xemn's crown is darn near impossible. Falcom were evil back then. You have to take advantage of every little glitch or obscure "trick" (using the gloves or walking on enemies). I still can't do it. I've been attempting to beat that game since 1988. The fact that I'm still trying after all these years goes to show you how fantastic of a game it is.

you don't have to get the father's crown with the father.
with a quick trick you can do it much easier with the daughter.
just get the jump boots and the matlock.
theres one spot where you can't jump high enough to hit a block with the matlock early on with her. if you put the jump boots on jump, then go to your items mid jump and select the matlock you can hit the block with it (fairlly tough to do) and she can get through the rest of the level fairly easily from there (theres one room where you will need a magic refilling potion to be able to matlock all the blocks)
i've never gotten that crown with the father but I have beaten the game.
quite an awesome game.
on a side note, what platform was part 1-3 on? msx maybe?

Yep, looks like the MSX and a bunch of other stuff (http://falcom.teamm3.com/). Crazy that the Dragon Slayer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Slayer) series branches out so much and covers so many different games, though.
On topic with a little tangent, which emulator were you originaly using, Darknut?

And don't forget that it was published by Broderbund!
Man, Broderbund was cool back in the day. Now they do shovelware (http://www.broderbund.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=7&path=1%2C2%2C7).

I've often commented that Broderbund were the Working Designs of the NES. Think about it; they brought over so many interesting and thoughtful titles that never would have seen the light of day in the US otherwise (Hudson's version of Lode Runner, Deadly Towers [that's right, I like it], Guardian Legend, Battle of Olympus).

I didn't know that dragon slayer 1-3 were on the msx I thought ihey were only on the NEC PC8801. Are they like LOTW at all?
The emulator I was using was Jnes version 0.5.3.
I ended up finishing it tonight after I got the password from my rom and entered it into my cart.

That's it, I'm bumping this way up in my "games to beat" queue. I love crazy-difficult NES games :-P

Man, I was about to give a really long winded answer to that. Awesome link! Thanks! <saved>

Dragon slayer 1, no, not at all. I beat the GB version, but HOLY CRAP, is it hard. I can't even get ANYWHERE inthe PC versions (PC88 and such), but maybe if I used save states...try the GB version for midget-ized characters. There's two quests and the second one is insane. I think I made a small video of the ending and dumped it to my PC as proof, since the game is so tough. You really have to leave your GB on for days to get through it. I don't think anyone could have possible ever beaten the game when it came out w/o an AC adapter.
Xanadu is very cool...I REALLY want to polay through it, but it is heavy on the Japanese...it seems more simlar to LOTW, but very different. It reminds me a little bit of Faxanadu with midget sized characters like LOTW...however, I haven't been able to play through it. Anyone know of a translated version?
Romancia...seems to be a side-scrolling action RPG, with the same Midget sized characters. I think it was supposed to be an easier kids game. But again, heavy on the Japanese, and I've been dying to play through this. I've been hoping for a translation for years.
Part 5, Sorcerian, afaik is what really made the series take off and reach a huge audience.
Also, keep in mind that many of these games have had full makeovers on newer computers and systems.

I found a Super NES rom for Dragon Slayer 1 but it seems text heavy and it is all in Japanese. It seems more like a straight up RPG-style game. Do 2 and 3 require translation? I didn't know if they were text heavy or if they are more like LOTW (side-scrolling, platforming-action). You wouldn't need a translated LOTW since there isn't much text involved.
DDCecil - I really want to see your hack! Do you have a patch or is it just a whole different rom?

Well, that's probably one of the Legend of Heroes games. I think LoH 1 and 2 came out for SFC, but maybe just part two.
